My standard breakfast for years has been two jamaican beef patties and coffee, adding up to 700 calories. I'm getting old and need to cut back on calories so I'm thinking of using oatmeal.

I used to eat it when I was broke and remember the only thing that made it palateable was the added sugar and dumping frozen fruits into it. I eventually got sick of it because I prefer meals to be savuory, spicy, sour etc. and to also not be goop.

How can I turn oatmeal into a savoury, spicy type of meal with varied texture while still being quick to prepare and low in calories? The major upside of frozen beef patties is that I can nuke them while the coffee is steeping and have breakfast ready in 6 minutes.

Garlic and onion powder? Cut up pepperoni sticks? A bouillon cube?

low sodium soy sauce

I've been eating savory oatmeal for breakfast for more than twenty years. I use regular oats, not steel cut or instant, and I cook them with water to an al dente texture. They should be cooked and have separate grains but not be hard and they definitely shouldn't be mushy or sloppy. Then I add hot sauce, a dash of olive oil, and black pepper.
>>
>>22052047
Oat biscuits but substitute sugary ingredients with savoury ones like olives, dried tomatoes, cheese etc.
>>
>>22052049
Is this serious or a trick?

>>22052091
Can I just do that to instant oatmeal? I don't have time before work for that.
>>
>>22052134
No. Instant cooks up mushy. Regular oats take barely 10 minutes to cook al dente.
>>
You have to cook them first and then add flavor after. I've experimented a lot with oats over the years. They don't absorb any flavors or sweeteners so trying is a waste of time.
>>
>>22052134
Put oats in water and leave them in the fridge overnight. Next morning they're ready to heat and eat
>>
who the damn hell takes 10 minutes to cook oats?
>soak regular (non-instant) in fridge overnight
>put in microwave for 2 minutes
>add toppings of your choice
done

forgot to add the fried egg on top
>>
>>22052047
Maybe a little bit of vanilla and use milk.
You can't use oats to make a decent dish, it's a filler/ diet food.
You can make it sweeter but none of that savory spicy sour shit you kept talking about.
>>
I cook my oats in beef stock and I put eggs and sour cream on top. Can be any eggs you like. Poached, fried, etc. Can also just throw meat in.
>>
Forgot to say if you want texture at minimum you want old fashioned rolled oats. Steel cut will give more of a chew but take 10 minutes absolute minimum to cook from a boil. Rolled oats have decent texture if you don't overcook them and they can be microwaved.
>>
>>22052047
peanut butter and sriracha for flavor, for texture you could add something like walnuts or cashews, or even croutons if you're supremely lazy
>>22052184
op literally says he microwaves beef patties
>>
>>22052047
I add a bunch of salt while cooking it and then stir in some salsa and cumin when it's done.
>>
>>22052134
the jews dont want you to know this, but you can cook regular oats in the microwave, you don't need instant. I cook 2/3rd cup regular oats + 1 cup water and a liberal amount of salt in the microwave for 5 min every day.
>>
>>22052507
meat stock instead of water sounds legit, gonna try that.
>>
>>22053196
Why though? You can spend a few more minutes cooking them on the stove for a superior al dente texture. And you don't need to irradiate your oats either.
>>
>>22053203
Because I'm cooking ground chiggun on the stove while that's going and i dont want to juggle two pots nor have to clean a second one every day
>>
>>22053203
It's only oats - get over it you diesel dyke. Go and polish your strapons.
>>
Overnight oats is the superior way to eat them. I don’t know about savory but I just use rolled oats chia seeds milk peanut butter maple syrup and some salt then leave it in the fridge till the morning. I’d imagine you could do the same thing with beef stock and savory ingredients and if you wanted it hot you could just microwave it when you wake up.

>>22052047
adding frozen mixed berries make both the oatmeal and berries taste much better than they would have separately, and it additionally cools the oatmeal while defrosting the berries

frozen strawberries are also good but they are harder to defrost

I'd just add a little extra salt to the water while it's cooking. Then, when it's done, remove from hear and whisk in some grated cheese (probably cheddar, but I could see other hard cheeses or even a cream cheese being good), then, when it's cooler, but still hot, whip an egg into it. Top with a pad of butter and some hot sauce. Tabasco or something else vinegar-based.
For myself, I like a little brown sugar, butter, unsweetened grated coconut, and cinnamon. The egg still goes in, too.
>>
>>22052047
baked oats
40g oats
75ml milk or water
1 whole egg
let soak for 5mins then bake at 180c for 25mins

add any kind of additives you like but thats the base. i like fried bacon & onions, thyme and oregano, start frying them first and once they're done the oats should be soaked enough and you can mix all together

i've heard so many people eating oatmeal with tuna that it has stopped sounding weird to me
>>
Savoury spicy sounds fucking gross but mix in a mashed up nanner or two, with your desired mix of cinnamon/allspice/nutmeg/cloves and a splash of syrup will do you right. Bonus points for crushed walnuts
>>
>>22055240
>Savoury spicy sounds fucking gross
it's essentially just a more nutritious rice you amerimutt brainlet.
>>
First step: toast the oats in a pan without any added fat for 2-3 minutes until you can smell a roasted scent.

The only acceptable solution is to cook them with cereal milk such as millet or rice which are sweet, then you add cinnamon and vanilla, also chop a frozen sliced banana so it becomes a sweet purée as it cooks and top with crunchy nuts. Cooking them with water does nothing but a huge disappointment because your breakfast would taste like cardboard.
>>
>>22055487
Hurr durr it's just like rice!!!!!1

Rice and oats taste completely fucking different you animal
>>
Oats can have amazing texture if you avoid using a shit ton of water to cook them. You only need so much.
>>
>>22055565
this dood gets it.

>>22052047
Read a thing that says putting a teabag in the oats with water and letting infuse gives it an interesting flavour

Was going to suggest bone broth instead of stock. Much more nutritious. Stock is almost all water + salt.
