always act like you ruined their day when you order cold cuts?

Anyone ever notice this? They also move slow, forget what you asked for, and do one thing at a time.

Am I the only one who notices this?
>>
in supermarkets, undesirable employees are sometimes sent to work the deli as punishment because it's the department that has the most annoying work and deals with the most customers other than the checkout
>>
>>22055712
all deli employees dream of a "perfect day" where nobody makes them use the slicer and thus they dont have to clean the slicer that day. it wil never happen, but they all dream about it. and you ruined it.
>>
Working full time and not being able to pay your rent hits harder when you are a meat servant for fat boomers.
>>
>>22055712
Yeah, I don't get it. A couple weeks ago I wanted to make "the ultimate sub" so I bought an italian loaf. I certainly did not need a half pound of ham, mortadella, roast beef, turkey, salami, pancetta, bresaola or so much provolone or mozz...so I just asked for 3 slices of each as it would be the perfect amount. Right away he got a huge attitude and kept slapping the meat bags on the counter. He was like 6 meats into cutting, like 10 minutes in and kept mumbling under his breath so I said "you know what, nevermind" and walked away and ended up going to Jimmy Johns. It's like these jerks act like they work in a coal mine or something
>>
>>22055759
gr8 b8 until you said you walked away to jimmy johns that kinda ruined it for me.
>>
>>22055759
i did a 360 and walked away

I worked at a legitimate deli back in 2010, and we were absolutely slinging meat and cheese like there was no tomorrow. We had three meat slicers and two for cheese. I never made someone feel unwelcome, even in the worst of times. The only customers that actually bothered me were the ones who would ask for stupid shit like 2 pounds of shaved ham (one old schizo lady literally wanted this for her cats) while there was a huge line and only two employees (the third was in the back pretended to work making chicken salad). Great experience understanding the wagie life, the coworker issue, and the entitled female customer.
>>
>>22055712
Because deli workers are always big back 40+ year old Italian fat guys who look like they lost all hope and can't wait to get home to molest their daughter or beat their wife
>>
>>22055781
shaved was the worst because it just piles up. i liked mortadella because you can make nice folds and it's almost as wide as the paper so it slides in the bag real easylike
>>
>>22055781
they have automatic slicers now that require no human input other than putting a piece of meat or cheese on it. idk why everywhere doesn't have those. honestly I want 2 pounds of whispy thin turkey slices but I'm afraid to ask for them because I don't want to burden the employee or hold up a line like you said, even if it's literally their job.

Our slicers had automation as well, but it took up a full meat slicer for 10 minutes, and we had a CROWD on the weekends when she'd come in. I'm talking a number system with people 15 tickets behind. This wasn't a Kroger.
>>
>>22055792
yeah makes sense. I have a local grocery store near me now and I place my deli order a few hours ahead and go pick it up later. I'm not sure if it's any more convenient for them but it spares me the awkwardness.
>>
>>22055786
I haven't had mortadella since I worked there, since it's kinda expensive, but man was it good. We could "dispose" of bad cuts the right way when nobody was looking. My other fav was olive loaf. Fucking olive loaf was so good, but I'd never pay what they ask for it.

Kek. Ikr. Cope wagie.

>all deli employees dream of a "perfect day" where nobody makes them use the slicer and thus they dont have to clean the slicer that day. it wil never happen, but they all dream about it. and you ruined it.
This. I feel guilty whenever I go to make an order there because I know how much work that thing must be to operate (setting aside having to lug the giant slab of meat/cheese to load it with) and how much of a bitch it must be to clean. I wish I could just jump the counter and do the slicing myself and let the deli clerk on shift go dissociate in the walk-in freezer or something. I always try to be as courteous and fast as possible. The damn awkwardness though of seeing 9 different falvors of turkey/ham on display with 6 of them being unrecognizable since my last visit while I state at the glass counter like a Romero Zombie eats me up inside.

Unfortunately shaved is the best cut of deli meats for piling it on sammies and the only place you can really get it as they don't typically sell pre-cut containers/bags of it that that thin.

My sammich I got the cuts from the deli. The wagies were sooo mad that I got 4 different things cut.
>>
>>22055845
$10+ american cheese cured me of this problem. i never even consider the deli anymore. ground beef rice and broccoli go much further
>>
>>22055712
working the deli counter is a job. do you have no empathy? imagine working a job. it sucks. when you don't see the purpose of this society, or money, or a job, being force to have a job is soul crushing. maybe think of that next time you get made at the deli guy. this isn't a cohesive village where everyone is striving towards the same purpose. you're not going to find the deli guy is relatable and cares about your day. you must be some kind of psychopath to have such high expectations of a guy who's only there to make money in a supermarket deli. he's likely wondering why he doesn't neck himself and just be replaced by a mexican already.
>>
>>22055845
>shaved is the best cut of deli meats for piling it on sammie
this is simply not true and you can see the evidence for it at every single sandwich restaurant where none of them are using shaved meat.
>>
>>22055923
>I got 4 different things cut
hope you enjoyed your pubic hair bro
>>
>>22056047
I watched them cut it. The wagie was an older lady who never planned or saved for retirement. Plow deep while sluggards sleep.
>>
>>22055712
Most supermarket deli workers are also responsible for prepping RTE meals and premade sandwiches, cooking and stocking the hot bar food, and stocking and recovering the cold case and displays. You've got a lot of shit running on timers, things that need temps monitored and recorded, and constant cleaning, while stores regularly understaff the deli counter and ask them to cover other areas.

.t guy who worked in a supermarket in college who regularly got "volunteered" to work the deli
>>
the nice lady at mine will give me sample slices. so far pastrami turkey is really good, don't know how it's different from other pastrami
>>
>>22055712
Yeah it is super annoying. Especially when I'm just getting a pound of muenster and a pound of cracked pepper turkey cut at a 3. Not exactly rocket science but you'd think I asked to fuck their wife.
>>
That's the majority of employees. Yesterday I got Wendy's and tipped the DT guy 5 bucks because he was genuinely happy and pleasant. I adore that.
>>

>tipping the drive thru
Is this some bot post? There's no way Americans really
>>
>>22055781
Maybe your businesses was fucking stupid for not having a couple pounds pre-cut for this exact scenario.
>>
>>22056031
It takes up a lot more space and is thus more expensive to store. Plus it goes bad faster. More surface area = more bacteria
>>
>>22056120
storing it and taking up space are moot points because any self respecting sandwich shoppa slices their meat to order.
it's a meme regardless.
>>
>>22056118
It's more to show appreciation for his dedication to be genuinely nice and do his Jon correctly. 99.99% of the time peoppe are either dicks, retarded, or depressed.

I’d use the deli more often if I could call the workers that

>>22055789
lol
>>
>>22055712
>take inventory for a week of how much of each cut is sold
>pre slice an average amount you expect to sell that day, any extra volume slice ad hoc towards the end of the shift, any less just refrigerare for next day
Problem solved. Or am I retarded?
>>
>>22055781
>and the entitled female customer.
what exactly makes the boomette entitled?
>>
>>22056130
you're retarded.
>>
>>22055738
kek
>>
>>22055845
Deli sllicers really are babby mode to use, so I wish that too, but some retard would immediately slice their finger off and sue for 50 million. Probably on purpose.
>>
>>22056087
Whole cut of beef vs a congealed glob of turkey protein with spices glommed onto it. Both taste good but you get what you pay for
>>
they really don't like when you ask them for solid chunks, apparently it's a pain in the ass to measure.
>>
>>22056130
The place I worked at actually did that. We pre-sliced probably 50 pounds of the most popular turkey, ham, and cheese. Only a few customers were picky enough to say that they wanted it "fresh." (they probably just let it rot in their fridge and ate mcdonalds).
>>
>>22056248
the slicer's max height is something like 2 inches, maybe 1.5. it's very easy to give you a 2 inch slice. but most of the time the customer doesnt actually know how thick they want it, they just have a vague idea "i need a big chunk". so you tell them it's "2 inches" or whatever and they think that sounds small.
at this point you realize you might cut this 2 inch fucking chunk and they wont want it, or you could get the big knife and cut a huge chunk by hand that visually scans as their "big chunk", it ends up weighing two pounds, and they dont want it because it's $30.
if you want a big chunk you're getting a 2 inch chunk or 2 2 inch chunks and that's what you're gonna get.
>>
>>22055712
>is this thin enough?
No
>is this thin enough?
No
>is this thin enough?
No
>is this thing enough?
Too thin!

Hmm I wonder why they are unhappy. Customers suck.
>>
>slicee so thin they're invisible
>>
>>22056130
every store sells pre sliced. fresh sliced is marginally better and the main reason people go to the counter.
>>
>>22056671
i would have customers tell me to hold the slice up to the light to see if it was transparent.
but the best customers knew what the levels of the slicer were and would just say "cut it on 1" or whatever.
>>
>>22056263
Makes sense. The rub, particularly with cheese, is that it's so dense so a small looking "chunk" of the the wheel/block ends up weighing more than what most customers are expecting to pay more.

>>22056764
>every store sells pre sliced. fresh sliced is marginally better and the main reason people go to the counter.
This. Oxidation is the enemy, especially for fresh deli cheese/meats that don't have the comfort of being bathed in preservatives like the pre-packaged stuff so if you're already paying a premium might as well go the extra mile as have it freshly sliced to minimize air exposure.
>>
When I go to the deli I find it's easier to ask for X slices of something at Y thickness.

Example: I want 5 slices of bologna at 5 thickness.

That way there's no guess work of 1/2lb,1lb and of shit being unequal like 10 slices of bologna and 15 slices of cheese most of which goes to waste.
>>
>>22056188
feeding two pounds of people food to cats
>>
>>22056948
>people food
If you're feeding supermarket ham to your family you need to reevaluate your life choices.
>>
>>22056953
god bless the cat killing grannies. sodium od is a hell of a way to go.
>>
I've never gotten anything from a deli because the prices are ridiculous, I have no idea how ordering works and I hate interacting with people. Put in a kiosk for ordering and business would probably double.
>>
which deli meats don't give you ass cancer
>>
the deli at my grocery store cuts boars head shit and then puts it in little bags right outside the deli counter
best of both worlds, i dont have to bother them and i get fresh deli meat. only downside is it expires so fast so i usually just stick to the ultraprocessed shit
>>
>>22055712
Working the counter at a big gay corpo supermarket is miserable and you deal with terrible people who insist you debone a fish or slice to an exact thickness for them even though there's trays of fillets and sliced meat right next to them that you prepared minutes earlier.
