why has the price of deli counter meat and cheese gone through the roof in the last few years? i remember $9/lb was expensive for meats, now they're all in the $16-20/lb with only the most disgusting looking half spoiled turkey selling for ~$10.
what caused this, israel?

trump's tariffs increased input costs for farmers, trump's war increased the price of oil which affects almost everything, and trump's badgering the federal reserve to print more money. also trump's government printed 25% of the nations money supply in 2020 (somehow managed to pin the resulting inflation on sleepy joe)

Are you in America? Trump bungled everything he touched but especially covid, covid fucked the world economy, Biden did a world class job of mitigating the damage, then Americans freaked out because all they know is the prices were lower when Trump was president so they put him back in and this time he knows he won't be prosecuted even for trying to overthrow democracy, so he's fucking things up twice as fast as last time. In this case that partially includes fighting a really stupid war for Israel that's fucking up the world economy so technically yes though.

One big reason is the 2008 housing crisis. It obliterated vast amounts of private money, caused people to spend far, far less. In the short term that actually caused deflation, but it also caused many of the actual small, independent deli producers (not the shit you buy in supermarkets) to disappear. Then it caused supermarkets (the supply chain) to reign supreme: prices skyrocketed and quality plummeted.

The second massive factor is the fact that oil, fertiliser, wheat prices, labour costs are decided globally - not "in the US" or "in the EU". Ukraine is a massive grain producer and exports mostly to poorer countries (Africa). If you attack Ukraine, you cut off Africa's food supply - which is where Wagner operates nowadays. The Ukraine revolution was triggered by the CIA, to drive a wedge between EU-Russian cooperation on gas and oil, and they succeeded. What they didn't realise was that this played in the hand of the Russians: they got a reason to put boots on the ground in both Ukraine and Africa. A second consequence is that countries like India and China were now far more willing to pay premium prices for oil, fertiliser, grains/seed oils/wheat etc and that caused prices to escalate further.

If you then threaten to annex Greenland you're causing even more issues, because Greenland controls 13% of the world's supply chain. All of it - not just food. How? Because Maersk is a Danish shipping company which controls 13% of the world's supply chain and Greenland is part of Denmark.

The dumbest possible thing you could do in this scenario is attack a country like Iran under false pretence ("they have nukes") which controls access to the Persian Gulf (oil, fertilisers) with ties to another country which controls access to the Red Sea (Yemen). If both of those straits get cockblocked the entire world economy gets nuked. Which is what's happening right now.
