Some of them can be, depends on the producer. I find bigger style Cab Sauv or Syrah from your typical quality big names (Ridge, Corison, Hall, Domaine Eden, Jonata, etc.) need minimum 10 years in cellar so i dont buy those because i dont want to store shit for 10 years and have a 10% chance the bottle is corked or fucked from brett, mouse, etc. i find moreso a lot of stuff between Santa Barbera up to Santa Cruz is good as long as its high elevation as they dont have as big of an issue with overblown extraction as Napa and generally get cool enough at night to retain acidity.
Honestly just try anything from Sandhi or Stagiare and if they dont hit you wont like any other California reds.

I want to start drinking wine more seriously and regularly so I can develop my palate and gain more appreciation for it. I'm not a complete wine noob and I have a general idea of what I like and where I'd like to start.
So should I just pick an appellation and buy 5 or so bottles from it more or less at random (reading tasting notes to get some idea of what I'm getting) to get a feel for it?
I've heard that you can buy good wine for $20 a bottle and that after that you get seriously diminishing returns, granted that was >5 years ago. Is this (still) true? I'm sure it depends to at least some degree on the specific type of wine and region it's from, I just don't want to waste my time and money on mediocre wine. I'd rather drink less good/great wine than more decent/meh wine.
There's a locally owned wine bar that I'm going to check out that seems highly regarded and unpretentious from it's reviews, so I'm gonna check it out soon and see what they recommend too, but I'd also like to hear your opinions.

>So should I just pick an appellation and buy 5 or so bottles from it more or less at random (reading tasting notes to get some idea of what I'm getting) to get a feel for it?

You're much more likely to learn if you find a good wine shop and go there asking for typical examples of each wine style. If you have to buy 5 at random to get an idea it's going to take you ages to learn about different styles unless you're an alcoholic.

>I've heard that you can buy good wine for $20 a bottle and that after that you get seriously diminishing returns, granted that was >5 years ago. Is this (still) true? You really only get seriously diminishing returns after about $60, but you can easily get good wine for $30 apart from the most prestigious regions. $20 is going to be more hit and miss, but you can get away with it for a lot of wine styles.

>There's a locally owned wine bar that I'm going to check out that seems highly regarded and unpretentious from it's reviews, so I'm gonna check it out soon and see what they recommend too, but I'd also like to hear your opinions.

I'd do some research on what you already like and are interested in and start tasting bottles that are similar in varietal makeup or style across multiple different appellations. >>22070984 this is also good advice. good bottle shops and bars SHOULD have knowledgeable people working on the floor.
>>
>>22070860
>an appellation and buy 5 or so bottles
Idk I’m more on the train of always hopping appellations. Oh I haven’t had a vouvray before, banyuls I’ve heard of that, oh xyz grape I’ll give that a try etc. So basically hitting every major region and subregion and every varietal I can get my hands on. Then the ones I liked I can revisit and yeah get from a different producer or really deep dive on the sub-appellations but until you become familiar with almost everything that isn’t totally obscure and hard to obtain, there’s just too much shit out there to try than posting up drinking chianti over and over again like some boomer confident in what he likes without ever trying anything else lol. Of course there will be staples and things you return to and I’m not saying that’s your intent- just stating my overall mindset

Tried Albert Bichot Bourgogne at $20 from costco. Heard bichot was like louis jadot where it’s “fine” but overall subpar and overpriced big producer slop. On the contrary I was pretty damn impressed on how good it was for a fuckin $20 regional which had way better qpr than lower end louis jadots I’ve tried
Otherwise past month I had a good blaufrankisch, a bad blaufrankisch, an alright zweigelt, an austrian pinot, vajra langhe neb “clare j.c.”, and last night a good ol’ dr. loosen blue slate
Today’s probably ovum’s “big salt” orange
ALSO I tried catena’s entry malbec was pretty good I understand the boomer hype but I think it was hard carried by the new oak in the blend.
Got a ‘22 Gros Nore red bandol I’m gonna crack soon. Found a terrebrune in a different store a few days after I bought the former and had some fomo cause the latter was cheaper yet had an extra year’s age (I’m already drinking it 2young) and a touch more mourvedre (85 instead of 80)

No the white wasn’t anything to write home about. The acacia barrel touch was a neat gimmick ig. Their orange and cab sauv rose are breddy gud but again nothing transcendental or anything lol
Also at least according to wine spectator ‘22 was a better vintage for sovthern rhone whereas ‘21 was trash for them so if that applies to provence I feel better about my gros nore

I ended up getting both and to be honest I am a bit dissapointed in both. I actually ended up liking the Bollinger more despite the tasting notes of pol roger appealing to me more. Guess I'm sticking with Roederer for that price range.
>>
>>22087511
I'd just get into cremant for where you're at in your wine journey. You can get the same quality as nice grower champagne (the same tier and above for what you're likely currently paying for bolli and roederer) at a much more modest price buying cremant and traditional method from cool climate regions outside champagne. shit like >>22061391 is 75% of what billecart-salmon extra brut rose at 25% of the price.

finally had LdH tondonia (2008) and I gotta say I was disappointed. It was a good rioja I guess, but it’s still just a tannin bomb rioja with not much else going on desu
Also tried bollinger for the first time it was breddy gud but I’ll probably stick to grower champagnes at lower price points
>>
>>22093369
Shoulda got bosconia which is far superior. Far less oak
>>
>>22093377
They didn’t have it. Besides, I hear tondonia get name dropped more often. I’ll give it a try eventually but big tannic wines e.g. chiantis are just not my style; I’d rather drop money on burgundy or whatever.
Also I cracked that ‘22 gros nore bandol red a few days ago and was similarly unimpressed. Granted I know I was drinking it too young. It was kind of cool with the spice notes and idk if I’ve ever had a “fancy” wine that was unfiltered and unfined like that (usually it’s just the hipster $20 stuff)
Also forget if I posted in this thread about it but had a “low end” amarone for $45 and it was breddy gud.
Finally I’ll mention (forgot if I did before) I got to taste ‘22 domaine hermand-geoffroy mazis-chambertin red which they wanted $500 for the bottle (I paid like $25 for a 1oz sample) so finally got a grand cru under my belt but idk man I think I can get similar quality 1ers for as low as even $50. Maybe it wasn’t a good domaine or vintage or I’m just filtered or whatever but $30-$50 really does seem to be the sweet spot regardless of region. Maybe $100 bottles of champagne or burgundy 1ers for ballin out on special occasions while $20ish is for “daily drinkers”
>>
>>22093403
Tondonia gets names dropped cause it's their flagships label. But bosconia which is their 2nd tier label is more "Burgundian" (their words not mine). I've always enjoyed it over the Tondonia which is just an oak bomb. Albeit not as bad as shit riojas.

Also I personally don't find any value above 100 burgers a bottle whether it's burgundy or not. Some village tier burgs in the 60~ range is 99% the way there.
>>
>>22093416
yeah, I guess tondonia stands as the archetypal rioja- it’s just not for me. I have no doubt oaked grenache/ tempranillo has potential though so I’ll have to give bosconia a try eventually. Still I’ve had some decent priorats and whatnot but man those extreme tannins are just not enjoyable for me. Call me filtered or whatever
>Some village tier burgs in the 60~ range is 99% the way there.
exactly
>>
>>22093416
From my experience (and the spec sheets) LdH seems to use far less new oak than a lot of other Rioja producers (apart from the real new school ones that use none), Idk what you're talking about.
