You can get some products fine at walmart(like soy sauce), but there are many things they don't carry so I go to a place I know for those things. It's not a big deal man. I just mentioned that. I also use rice vinegar and rice wine. and I've tried indian food where I need to marinate chicken in fucking yogurt. I've tried lots of types of curry too. I haven't been to SEA but I've attempted to make their dishes here and there. I'm a good cook. I mostly go to a restaurant and order something before I try to recreate it myself. I'm mostly a southern cook and I make bbq. growing up I mostly ate long grain rice with butter and salt

I own a few zojirushis and one is a 8 cup cooker I bought at a thrift store but it's too big. I own some no name brand too but I forget what it is. I also cook ramen in it because it works well for that

I am still not okay with what I hear japanese people do. they leave their rice cookers on the counter for a whole day? I know it seals but I don't trust it. I bought a glass lid and I take the sleeve out of it and put it in the fridge

even a yamasa shinmi is already and upgrade and available in stores if you know where to go

and it's not like you cannot get actually good alternatives
just order Takesan Kishibori Shoyu online
Yamaroku, Yamasan kyoto UJI, Murasaki Purple are all easy to order online

my personal favorite isn't even from Japan
it's a saishikomi shoyu made in Berlin
