I'm experimenting with brewing lighter roasts in the phin but so far it has been difficult to get it right.. I've been using the same beanweight as i do when i use cafe du monde so maybe that's the problem and i need to double it..

dont get one without any sort of temperature gauge. knowing temp is important and even if you dont care at first you'll care eventually and then you'll need to buy another new kettle with a thermometer on it.

it doesnt stall with the preground cafe du monde, only when i use fresh beans and my hand grinder, so I'm probably just grinding too fine, even though it looks about the same visually.

>>22091017
just tried with a coarser grind and the water goes through fine for the bloom, but then the main pour stalls. i unscrewed the top at least 3 or 4 full turns until the water started moving, but then it went through too quickly. it was like from 0 flow to 100 with no in between so maybe there is some vacuum effect happening.

In the hoff's latest video he says that these grounds from the machine he was talking about are coarser than he would grind for filter coffee
Am I just retarded or is this ridiculously fine for a pourover? I wouldn't grind anywhere close to this fine. I would expect my filter to clog if I tried to brew this in a v60
>>
>>22091801
i dont know what grinder he used in this video and the grounds look super fluffy so its hard to gauge how fine it really is but to me in this video his "too fine" looks roughly as fine as his preferred grind in your picture
https://youtu.be/mMwscUNKbPk?si=2BFvYF5KiMBGcu_g&t=83
and again here, pretty fluffy but this looks coarser than the "too coarse" in your picture
https://youtu.be/1oB1oDrDkHM?si=l-W5Qpw6N8KM5Gxs&t=123
so i dont know what the fuck hes on about
and yes i know that grind size does change depending on brewer/grinder/burrs used but since it seems hes referring to the same brewer/method in both videos and i assume the same grinder since its not mentioned
>>
>>22091832
It's a POS grinder in a shitty all in one espresso machine and he's emphasising how bad it is by comparing the grounds from it to what he'd use for a pourover (not in that image, he doesn't show the grounds he'd use for a pourover just states that these grounds are coarser than what he'd use for a pourover)
Also the grounds on the left of the screenshot I posted are espresso fine but the grounds on the right are the ones he's referring to as too course which is still absurd to me
https://youtu.be/XcoDb_4s4y8?t=860
>>

You could watch about 6 seconds further where he puts the grounds through a particle analyzer to see what hes talking about. You see that big red spike starting around 500 microns and rapidly raising? Yeah you don't want those. See the peak at 1200 micron? Not what you're after for espresso. Now compare it to a P100. Tighter spread at a lower peak of 700micron.
>>
>>22091906
That doesn't change the fact that he says the coffee from the Baristina is coarser than what he'd use for a pourover and to my eyes the grounds he shows are already far too fine for a pourover
>>
>>22091932

the pastebin does not suggest a grind level for cold brew, it just says "coarser". my grinder has a cold brew suggested range but it's pretty wide, i think like 1335 microns to 2005 microns. what should i do?
also, is every grinder the same in terms of the numbers? if i say i have it set to 8 does that mean the same thing for everyone or are all grinders different? mine says "one click = 0.0167 microns"

I got like a 200€ chink grinder even tho I dont know if grinding the coffee vs buying pre-ground makes a big difference.
I use moccamaster basic device

due to vague recollection of hoffman video I now grind like 70 coarsenesss coffee for it, pour some water on it to degas or something and let it sit 1 min without jug being in
turn the device on again, put the jug in
I mix the grounds when its halfway done
Anything interesting to do besides those steps. Should I buy a 150€ espresso machine.

You could take a bunch of beans, throw them in a sack and bash them with a hammer and it'd be fine for cold brew.
The only thing you need to care about with cold brew is that it's not so fine that it goes through whatever filter you're using. You'll always have some sediment get through (hence why many people use a V60 filter to decant into whatever jug they're using).

Dark Roast + a smidge coarser. Using more beans anyhow. Probably less with denser Meds/Lights. Oughta have a Vietnamese & Turk/Greek coffee recipe in there too.

I bought an Ethiopian bag from Starbucks - in season, for once, I usually dont check - and it was be best cup & bag I've had I'm ages. Either while buying what's fresh per global harvest differences will be even mo'better.
>>
>>22094086
>I dont know if grinding the coffee vs buying pre-ground makes a big difference.
It absolutely does.
Once the coffee is ground it loses flavor pretty fast. The industry is working with million dollar megagrinders and your local roaster probably with a 10k+ one, so your first pourover from a high end store coffee vis a vis the first 1-3 shots of espresso ground at your lcs may taste better than what you can achieve with a home grinder. But if you drink a normal amount of 15-30g bean equivalent daily, then it will take you more than a week to drink a standard bag of 250g whole beans, you'll get a much more consistently enjoyable experience with home grinding.

I'm genuinely confused; pines grow on every continent and every continent has some culture or other that uses pinecones as a food source.

just got my deep27
made my first brew with 10g
looks and tastes the same if not better than 20g in my v60
makes a perfect 1 cup.
pretty fine grind as well.
i'll need to brew more to really "know" it but after just 1 brew i think i want to say this is better than a v60 period, like especially for newcomers, its SO CHEAP and so easy, no "recipes" required
it was $63aud(tax and shipping included)
for a brewer that makes coffee this good thats so cheap.
it lacks body but its 10g so i cant really expect much to begin with but it is more body then when brewing 10g with a v60
i know a bunch of people have endorsed it but i think the v60s days are numbers
at least for 1 cup brews, i hope hoffmann puts out a new 1 cup recipe and replaces the v60 with this.
again only my first brew and maybe i'll change my tune after 10 or 20 and with many different types of coffee.
who knows.
anyway, thanks for reading my blog.

I think I'm ready to switch from my Flair to a machine. Is the Gaggia Classic a meme that's gonna drive me insane from having to mod and faff around with it or is it a good deal? It's the one machine that never seems to change its price, other competitors all shot up massively. From Hoff's $500 machine comparison video it's basically the only one that retained its price. I'm in the "poorfag who's willing to save up/wait for Black Friday" group, I'm not about to blow 1K on a Rancilio Silvia anytime soon. I also considered a Bambino Plus but those are somehow going for more than a Classic these days. There's a $650 Bambino Plus + Encore ESP combo on Amazon right now so that's worth considering, I guess, since I'll also need a new grinder (My Chestnut C2 was always meant to be a poorfag cope but I kept it for too long, even after I upgraded from poorfag student to broke wageslave). I kinda want an ESP Pro, though.

Also considered an Europiccola for the meme because I actually enjoy the lever experience, but apparently that requires a lot of thermal surfing to get things done.

you ever have a smell so pungent and overwhelming that you feel you can taste it?
thats how
its not actually in your mouth but your nose and tongue are very closely linked
so im tasting something and its linking back to the things i have smelled in my memory
it doesnt match anything else so my brain goes "oh it must be x" even if x was only ever remembered from smell not via taste, a match is a match.
and so thats the memory it conjures in your mind leading to you(me) thinking "hmm this tastes like pencil shavings"

It's not a terrible grinder and for a while it was the only viable budget electric home grinder on the market, but there are many grinders in its price range that outperform it now. The new Eureka Peppe grinder seems particularly interesting as it looks to be basically an updated Eureka Filtro for $160. Replace the 50mm brew burrs with the espresso burrs for $30 and you may have a very capable espresso grinder.

I got butthurt because this Indian guy was bullying me, he's always bragging about this allegedly several thousand dollar espresso machine he has in his house
And for some reason he decided to try and embarrass me in front of people when I said I like a latte but I was drinking too much milk so now I have a macchiato

Then he scoffs tsk you don't even know what that is
And first if all I'm Italian so I know what the word in my fucking ancestral language means, but I go
"It's just black with a dollop of-"
ERM akshually its not BLACK COFFEE It's ESPRESSO, you don't even know what you're talking about

And obviously he's a clown and I guess thinks espresso is a type of coffee and not a process?
I didn't feel like getting into it, so now I'm just seething online about it

it will make coffee
it wont be very good and you cant really make it better but it will be coffee
the grounds that it produces will always be a mess
boulders and micro fines galore
it used to be recommended because it was "good for the price" which is code for "this sucks but you wont get anything better without at least doubling your budget"
the problem is that this hasn't been true for like a decade.
so now the only good thing you can say about it doesnt apply.
which goes back to my first point "it will make coffee" but so will a pod machine and for much much less.
whatever you pay for any baratza product you can find a much much better grinder for the same price
baratza still exist because the average consumer just doesnt know any better.

The Vario is still an excellent grinder option. dated UI but the ditting steels make excellent pourover and light roast espresso grinds, and the ceramics are great for traditional shots.
>>22100469
The Peppe uses 50mm burrs so I'm assuming it's the same burrs as the Eureka Filtro, which seems to be discontinued (or at least very difficult to get now). The 50mm burr size from Eureka has 2 burr options, one for espresso and one for brew. I'm assuming that the internals are basically a filtro/crono/etc. It could be different, but I don't really see Eureka deviating from pressing various sized burr housings on top of their standard 310w ac motor. It would be really difficult to get the Peppe down to the price it is without using already established production lines.

your inability to admit you made a mistake by not clarifying it was a metal aeropress filter is pathetic, but i expect as much from an anime poster.
the default filters for aeropress are paper
so by just saying "aeropress filter" you are implying that you are using the paper filters
if you arent using the default YOU need to mention that. so are you retarded, or esl or both?
alternatively if your metal aeropress filter said the words "aeropress" on it then all of this could have been avoided because if i had seen the metal filter said "aeropress" on it then i would know you are using a metal aeropress filter and thats what you are referring to when you say "aeropress filter"
from what i can see most metal aeropress filters say the word "aeropress" on them so either its on the other side or this specific metal aeropress filter doesnt have it.

also there is a reason why moka pot filters are shaped in the way that they are, its to ensure it seals correctly and builds pressure with no bypass around the filter or gasket, i dont think metal aeropress filters are shaped correctly to assist with this, i think they are all flat and thus not able to seal correctly
if you want a better moka pot filter i recommend the E&B Lab competition filter(for whatever moka pot size you have)
