What's the worst food or cooking-related gift you've ever received, or bought yourself? Doesn't have to be an appliance.
>be me
>partner and I enjoy cooking, have spent a decent amount on the hobby
>new knives, cutting boards, etc all things we bought ourselves before moving into our house
>mom brings me a wrapped gift, open it

i like my recharagable grinders, great gift from the lady
the pepper is a little slow, but that's ok. i'll pull out the hand grinder or spice grinder if i need a large volume for a recipe

generally any multitasker tool. i've been gifted an electric wok, pizza spinning reheater, there's been more but i don't remember. it's all shit.

I'm sure they're fine when they have batteries in, but I'd rather just have something I don't have to feed batteries for something that's going to be used that often.

I was gifted a Breville air fryer once. Sat in the box for a few years and then tried to give it away to everyone and even lastly my nephew and he didn't want it even though he was in a dorm.

Absolutely the most worthless piece of shit ever. It's like, do people really not have ovens? Well yeah my nephew didn't that's why I thought he'd might try it but I guess the kid was too smart to screw with such a pointless gadget that takes up space. What a worthless thing "air" fryers are. Even the name is ridiculous.
>>
>>22093079
it is very nice. especially if you're like me and salt literally everything individually. like I said the pepper is kinda slow, i might look into a higher powered one in the future. the salt is banger tho
>>
>>22093085
they're much more efficient than ovens
i mean I don't want one, but that's mostly a counter space limitation.
they certainly have a use and purpose. honestly I'd give up the oven for more cabinet space and then take a moderate sized counter top air fryer. the rare times I need more space I can use the smoker/grill.
woman would probably bitch about baking problems so never gonna happen.

anyway, it isn't a terrible product. just not everyone needs it and that's OK. it was marketed heavily as a need for every home and that's gay and retarded
>>
>>22092258
My dad bought those faggy things and as soon as the batteries died I bought some proper hand grinders only for him to replace them immediately with the cheap pre-loaded ones from the spice aisle. No winning with boomers.

All my uni taskers have a dedicated shelf in the basement. About once a month I'll use one of them, so they do get use. But yes, generally useless.
I'd use my Instapot more, but I need a new gasket cuz the one on there fucking stinks from curry/chilli and I didn't clean it up right after. It's obviously clean now but the stink is still there. I want to puke just thinking about it. Maybe I'll try taking it out and letting it sit in baking powder or vinegar water. Maybe both, make a volcano.

Completely useless.
There is no positive lock between the motor shaft and the blades, it is just a hex shaft going into a soft plastic socket.
Therefore if there is ANY resistance, the shaft 'strips' and spins keeps spinning while the blades stay jammed in place. The shaft could also get extremely hot very quickly.

Garbage product.

>>22093085

Probably that mini waffle maker that used to be gifted everywhere. I think Dash makes it. It worked, but I think it was stupid since those arent even real waffles it makes. If you aren't cooking a full roast or needing to slow braise something for hours, airfryers are just the best way to cook small to moderate amounts of food.

>>22093725
Maybe they updated the design.
What does the inside of the blade holder look like on your model?
On mine it was a hex key shape made out of soft plastic that matched the shape of the motor shaft.
The issue being that it would slip under any kind of resistance because the plastic was weak.
>>
>>22094205
do you not wash your lettuce or spinach? nothing beats centrifugal force to remove water
>>
>>22094256
>What does the inside of the blade holder look like on your model?
that would be a pain to check, but the posting says it is ceramic and steel
https://a.co/d/026NuZZD
like I said, I have been using it extensively for a long time and have had 0 issues. i would just like it to be faster for pepper. but i like stupid amounts of pepper usually.
they now have an 'upgraded version of transfer' model, no idea what the fuck that means

i do not leave them in the charging base, i leave them out on the counter on a tiny cutting board to collect residual salt/pepper
i pull out the charging stand every few months to top them up and then put it back in a cabinet

there's shitty versions of every product, sometimes there's actually good ones

>>22094343
not that anon and I agree with your statement, but I rarely wash anything.

>>
>>22094205

>>
>>22092635

They are also very power hungry.

You're going to spend X % of the total cost on AAA batteries while pepper itself is cheap.

They ARE nice to use, I agree with this. But the annoying moments come along with it.
>>
These "ceramic" nonstick pans that work well when new but quickly start to stick.

Mine has pretty much entirely replaced my actual oven. Its big enough to roast a whole chicken in for a fraction of the energy cost and pretty much everything comes out faster and better
>>
>>22092258

>>22092258
>have to find them put them out every time she comes by or she'll get sad i'm not using her gift
I know this feel.
>>
>>22092706
I dunno if it's just the types I use but mine also clog up like fucking crazy. You also really can't adjust the grinder like a real mill so you're stuck with ultra fine grinding, which is fine if you're just topping something but not great otherwise
>>
>>22093824
This is for letting your kids larp with a flanged mace, not for actually cooking btw.
>>
>>22092258
i thought it was dumb when my mom bought an electric pepper grinder, but she pointed out that it is exhausting for her to stand over the big soup pot and grind lots of pepper so i suppose it's not a worthless gadget
>>
>>22092258
Imo the one-trick gadget, especially if they are cumbersome, for example a waffle iron, its big, its a pain to clean and it can only be used to make waffles, I can make an exception for rice cookers if you eat a shitton of rice like asians do but any utensil that has only one very limited use is just a waste of space.

I've gotten so many bad gifts over the years. Like, to the level of "did you mean to give this to me?" sorta shit from mom and brother. As such, I'm a pretty shit gift giver too.

>Marble pastry stone
I hate flaky pastry, it was too big to fit in my efficiency apartment fridge. I never used it. Found out it was $100.
>picnic basket with weird jams, jellys, and spreads
I was single, 25, living alone, autistic, and never went outside except to get fast food.
>"TGIF" liquor flask kit
Apparently mom thought I was a cheerful alcoholic on the go
>Battery powered salt and pepper grinder
It had 2 compartments in the unit, but I put 6 batteries in, went to try it for the first time when making my eggs, it took over a minute to get enough salt and pepper on the eggs. I took the batteries out and threw it away
>Crab/lobster butter warmers
I'm too retarded to get a high paying job to afford crab or lobster. They're still in the box somewhere.
>Christmas themed spoons and mugs
I hate christmas because of all the shitty gifts and consumerism, I think I threw most of them away already because snowflake cutouts in wood stirring spoons just trap food to rot.
>ship in a bottle decorative decanter globe
My brother thinks I'm buying a pint of fancy liquor to put in a temu decanter globe? I'm hoping the cat breaks it.

About 6 months into dating my now wife, my brother heard she was buying a house (we hadn't discussed moving in together yet) and bought her a nice ceramic dish set and throw blanket. She also thought it was weird someone she's never met bought her plates and dishes she didn't need. I was miffed he was buying stuff for her despite never meeting her and he was like $20k in credit card debt already.

Not cooking related, but random seasons of TV shows on DVD Iike Season 3 of Chapelles show and I have never owned a DVD player. Pearl snap plaid shirts despite never wearing anything but plain solid color T-shirts. Silver cufflinks despite never owning a french cut shirt.
>>
>>22097958
Sounds like you should just sell some of these gifts and make a bit of cash off of them. If you arent using them, why not?
>>
>>22097958
Forgot to mention, along with the marble pastry stone a pastry cutter thing, and other pastry tools like a rolling pin and hand tools I don't even know what they were for.
>wine preservation kit
I don't drink wine partially because I can't really afford it and don't like the taste of it.
>Creme Brulee kit
This one is 50/50; i like creme brulee and have made it many times, but I have no friends (other than wife) to entertain so the torch got used to light candles and do gunsmithing. I think I used it twice to burn sugar.
>fingers only oven mitts
I used them twice and burned my palm twice. Trashed.
>world market spices from around the world
They're premixed spices to make basically a meal for one. So it kinda tracks but I also think its moronic to buy most premixed spice blends when its simply marked up 1000% for the same shit I already have.
>micro serration steak knives
They came in a cheap wood box, she paid $200 for them and they can barely cut a hamsteak. They sure do fuck up my plates though.
>keurig pod coffee maker
I don't drink coffee and I can't afford $2 pods daily. I drink loose leaf tea. At least my wife uses it sometimes.

I sent a home depot sale link to my brother for a Milwaukee $100 drill and battery combo. He shipped me some chinese garbage from amazon that he paid $160 for.
Fuck, thanks for reminding me how much I hate gifts, giving and receiving.
>>
>>22097967
I do, the marble pastry and picnic basket I took back to williams sonoma and they gave me store credit. A lot of them I can't randomly return since I don't have the receipt. And I'm not going to make a facebook account to sell random junk to strangers for $5.

I got a chinese drone once. No camera, no attachments, just a big pod thing that could fly around a little. Sold that to a dude for $100. Brother paid $200 for it. This was back in like 2015 before drones were useful.
I did get a kindle fire one christmas. I don't read books and the thing was a color screen to read books bought on amazon only. Amazon did take it back for 'store credit'.
>>
>>22092258

You could always try reselling through craigslist or eBay. Store credit works though. Did you get anything you actually liked?
And that sucks about the Kindle. Theyre actually pretty decent devices if they arent restricted like the one you got.

>Finger only oven mitts
Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? Pure consoomer bait.

>>
>>22097958
>I've gotten so many bad gifts over the years. Like, to the level of "did you mean to give this to me?"
I've literally just started telling my relatives "Don't buy me anything for my birthday/Christmas. I'm good. I don't want anything" because, without fail, I end up with some piece of crap cluttering my house or shitty garment I wear twice out of obligation. I don't like being given shit for this reason - it creates an obligation.
>>
>>22098188
I forgot my latest one. I live in a house now, side-by-side refrigerator. During the holidays when family is here and we load it up with all kinds of shit, 100 beers, you name it he saw that and thought he'd give me a mini fridge for xmas. He even suggested places for me to put it around my house.

Its currently in a spare bedroom unplugged and I move it out once a year and put 6 sodas in it to show its still here. I have no place downstairs for it. I don't want a fridge burning up the electric bill or adding noise. And I never go upstairs so why the fuck would I plug it in up there? No, I don't loiter in my 100 degree garage in the summer or desire to leave it pluggedin outside again burning up money. Then again that might be a good alibi to say mice chewed it up so I can sell it for... $50?

I'm sure it does work just fine. The issue is that something like that is a large, single-use kitchen gadget that isn't useful for anything except it's intended purpose.
What do you do with it on weeks where you don't want pizza? You are forced to try to find somewhere to fit it into your cupboard, and it takes up space that could've been filled with something generally more useful. It's the definition of a white elephant gift.
