Farmer Markets suck so bad here in Virginia, and more than half of the state is rural. Even deep in the country they sell the same generic "farmer" shlock. They might have something cool (honeynut squash) during harvest season but usually not. Are they better in your state/country?
>>
Depends. I used to go to the one in downtown Dallas when I lived closer and it's mostly overpriced nonsense. Now I live north of it in Denton and the farmers market is much better. Still rather expensive, but I get my local produce every week from there. Sometimes I'll get coffee, herbs and local beef from there. Last time they had good squash and basil.

sucks about Virginia anon. Isn't that the state with all the bullshit speed traps?
>>
NOVA farmer’s markets are great. We go to Falls Church every weekend. So you live in Newport News or some shithole?
>>
Farmers markets are retarded. The whole purpose of them is to get local food to you so you don't have to drive all the way to a proper grocery store. Thing is, it's way more worth it and you pay much less at a grocery store and as long as you aren't disabled and not a lazy fuck who stupidly pays for that privilege of bringing the food closer to you, you should just suck it up and do a twice monthly trip to a grocery or a costco/sams.
>>
I remember 40 years ago the Va beach farmers market felt like it was at the edge of the universe. Absolutely nothing around it. I don’t think Landstown was even a thing and certainly no hospital, sportsplex, nor amphitheater or generic suburbia shopping center. To hit the farmers markets on the way to OBX (often they will also have fresh catch seafood)
>>
>>22093021
Farmers markets are the exact same scam as that "buy your kids' teachers school supplies!" bullshit.
>>
>>22093205
>that first month in third grade elementary school when we had to go to the principals office to sharpen our pencils because our room didn't have a sharpener

No, they need supplies.
>>
>>22093216
And farmers need you to buy their wares.
>>
>>22093021
All farmers markets suck now that they are all temu/AliExpress flea market adjacent

You don’t go their for food. You go their to buy and trade for bulk meth and fenty so you can be king shit of whatever holler, parish, hamlet, unincorporated township, or trailer park you crawled out of

What the fuck are my taxes going towards then? Well, we all know the answer, and it isn't feeding children school lunches that are nutritious or giving teachers the tools they need to succeed.

>Even deep in the country they sell the same generic "farmer" shlock.

I'm out of Colorado and we have access to most of the Midwest's farming and Colorado grows a substantial level of produce to the point where we COULD be self sustaining if we didn't fucking grow millions of tons of alfalfa. Despite this, our farmers markets are usually a joke, and when you look at the trucks they haul it in, you can see they are buying produce wholesale putting it in an event tent in a church parking lot and jacking the price up for boomers and retards. I've even noticed they buy the lower grade to save money and then market it as home grown.

You cannot show me one public school that doesn't have twice as many "administrators" as teachers. Public schools are a perfect example of what happens when you try to run a for profit business that is subsidized by the government.
>>
>>22093847
Nationwide, there are about 500,000 public school administrators and 4 million teachers.

Farmers markets are for large cities where you don't have access to farms without driving out to the country.
Objectively never been to a good Farmers Market that wasn't in NYC or LA. But in NYC and LA there were always good regular Famers Markets
>>
>>22093865
Guarantee you could shave off 50-100k of those administrators and the schools would be fine
>>22093021
I live in Southern Maryland and the farmers market by me is good. I actually participate in a cropshare with one of the locla farms. So far im pretty satisfied, even though last week was a bit smaller of a haul. The vegetables and fruits are always good quality and taste good.
>>
Virginia is one of the shittiest states in the country, the amount of nigs, spics, jeets and mudslimes in the northern part has ruined the state. I can't imagine living there >>22096640, I'm from Southern Maryland and its the same thing, Baltimore, PG, Montgomery ruin the rest of the state, only a moron with a humiliation kink would stay in any of these states.
>>
>>22096803
Montgomery County is fine, i used to live in Silver Spring, Forest Glen and Friendship heights. Baltimore is obviously a shithole and will continue to be a shithole. And i lived in College Park PG county which was OK, but other parts were rough.
All of the black families in my town have parents with jobs/careers, far as i can tell. My across the street neighbors are both professors. There's no exposure to gang shit like in Baltimore, which definitely helps. Also barely any Indians and no Arabs near me, strangely enough.
>>
>>22093021
I live near Asheville and the farmers market is pretty ok, especially the more permanent stores. I just refuse to buy things from nons. Too bad the projects where this trash live are on high ground so they survived helene.
>>
>>22093451
I've been to that farmer's market. All overpriced crap tbdesu. Some of it I recognise from AliExpress.
One of the seller's there gives my friend free stuff every now and then "because they know each other", but he's giving her maybe $1 worth of stuff, and she thinks of it like she's being given $20 because that's what he would normally charge. He's just taking the $1 loss out of the huge $19 markup he normally sells at to get a return customer who'll buy more of his marked up junk.
Maybe the takeaway here is I should get into selling at farmer's markets.
>>
Real farmer's markets worth going to are in major cities where it's just farmers skimming a little higher margin for stuff that's in season and harvested within the last couple of days, and at which they really don't want to have to pack up and bring home if they don't sell it. You will never find anything but dogshit out in rural areas beyond roadside peanut boilers and similar kinds of redneck shti.
>>
>>22095991
>providing basic necessities for classrooms is communism
lel this is why red states are all at the bottom of academic benchmarks
>>
>>22096878
I'm pretty sure the parents can manage buying notebooks and crayons.
>>
>>22096885
like i said, your attitudes toward public schooling is why your schools are all woefully behind ones in blue states.
>>
>>22096878
the lowest spending states (which are mostly white and high performing like an Idaho) are still dropping about 10K per student per year on public schools. Urban shitholes like DC spend 2-3x more.
>>
>>22096889
Behind in standardized test scores? Big whoop.
>>
>>22096899
>y-yeah w-who cares bout dem keeds...
it doesn't stop at just test score cleetus. people in blue states have higher qualities of life, everything from making more money to being more healthy. good public education is one of those societal pillars that make all that possible.
>>
>>22096913
Or maybe it's because blue states are richer for entirely different reasons, and so have excess money to throw at education.
Didn't they teach you that "correlation doesn't equal causation" in school?
>>
>>22093021
We don't have farmer's markets in Europe, just weekly markets. They have everything and 99% of it is shit. Shit clothes, shit wallpaper, you name it. Most of the food is utter garbage - supermarket tier but cheaper, and a public to match.

What you always have though, are oddballs. 2-3 weirdos who know their stuff inside-out and (if you go early) love to talk. They can sell anything, from socks over cars to smoked ham. They know what's going on in the region and will happily recommend you where to go. Not because it's objectively good, just because they heard about it.

It's more of a detective game, rather than "go to market and win the lottery". I've discovered the overwhelming majority of quality produce this way. To put this into perspective: one of my youth friends used to be sous-chef at one of "the world's 50 best restaurants". I also have a friend who is an inspector for Michelin - he runs a store with the best possible produce available on the planet. I actually do have access to the very best produce available on the planet.

Nothing beats fresh, in season, and local. If you worked an honest job for your wage, you deserve to be rewarded in kind. Don't waste your money on garbage. You deserve better.
>>
>>22093021
if you're willing to travel to maryland, go to the dutch village farmers market, it's all amish produce
the baked goods are kino and most of the stalls are cash-only, that's how you know it's real
>>
>>22096922
they're richer because they place more value on education. despite all its flaws going to college is still how you get ahead in the world and earn more than those who don't go. this isn't hard to understand but given that you're red state-educated i can see how this might be difficult kek
>>
>>22097006
The Amish farmstand at my farmers market makes the best pastries. Cinnamon buns and peanut butter cookies are my go to
>>
>>22093847
>>22096640
Somebody has to answer the phones when angry parents call to complain that Little Timmy and Little Sally should be given less homework but higher grades. It's a blessing to have administrators take those phone calls and let the teachers focus on teaching.
>>
>>22097051
>college is still how you get ahead in the world
are we talking about how rich the states are? Or rates of college attendance?
Because a bunch of red state people going to college isn't going to make red states richer. College educated people will go to where there are higher paying jobs, which tend to not be red states.
>>
>>22093021
some farmers markets are great because they sell fruit that isnt in widespread cultivation like pawpaw or rare varieties like rainier cherry. however at multiple farmers markets in the bay area here ive seen people straight up selling grocery store produce at a markup and shit that is out of season but magically isnt for this one reseller

I really miss the Amish donuts (moved away)
>>
>>22093021
Sounds like "rich faggot" farmer's markets. We have a few of them, in PA, but they're only common in wealthy suburban areas. At regular farmers markets, you can buy a live fucking cow, or goat, if you feel like it.
>>
>>22097283
In CA you should go to CPC licensed vendors for produce. They need to have their farm inspected and actually grow what they say they're growing to get the license. There should be a sign in their booth that says "we grow what we sell."
>>
>>22098058
Grim. Yall “live” like that? Smfh
>>
>>22097057
Not saying administrators are useless but there has been a glut of them in the past few decades. I stand by what i said.
>>22097283
Pawpaws are really good
>>22097706
The donuts miss you too anon
>>
>>22093021
I used to go to the one in Boston around the Haymarket station. I stopped because I quickly realized that they were just selling the rotting scraps that grocery stores were dumping as unsalable.

They did have a guy selling Italian sausage sandwiches there, though, and holy hell did he make some good ones.
>>
>>22093021
It's like thrifting. Some places have nothing. Some have 1-2 oddball finds. Some have mint kino stuff everywhere.

Virginia is a shit corrupt police state where the people simultaneously believe they are the master race yet refuse to read books. But that is unrelated to farmer's markets or thrifting. Virginia would still be shitty if there were fresh tomatoes and homemade cheese on every corner. (Hampton is cool though.)
>>
>live in small town of mostly whites
>slowly over time it has become subsidized housing, massive apartment buildings built up everywhere
>had a fantastic farmers market where they had fresh produce and homemade baked goods and even homemade frozen take home meals
>connected to a small mom and pop general store
>even sold things from local amish farmers
>2010s come around, the family that owns it sells it to the highest bidder so they can get out of dodge and the farmers market is now nothing but tik tok overpriced slop in a cup or styrofoam take home contaners, all made by certain people that charge 50 bucks for fried chicken doused in kool aid and dubai chocolate

i hate it here
