The last thread died several days ago because none of you fags want to talk about whiskey.I'm currently sipping on pic rel and it's quite good.
Any recs for a something that's >80% rye and less than $50? Sick of this straight rye shit
I'm cooked. The last few times I've drank liquor, even just sipping it, it has triggered severe acid reflux/bile reflux. Fuck my life.
>>22110929I can't drink anymore >:(
Fuck whiskey. Let's talk about Whisky
>>22111412Notable bottles I’ve tried recently:Ardbeg 13 Sauternes finish- superb .. perfect blend of smoky and sweetArran 17- it was ok but pretty basic as far as Sherry finish drams go Balvenie 15 Madeira cask - great summer whisky with a nice fruity peach side to it, more flavorful than I expected
>>22111412Whiskey is fine. Whisky has more variety of good flavors, but it sucks that they're both considered the same general category of spirit, when they don't really share much more in common than rum and brandy do from a taste and use perspective.
>>22111398Have you seen a doctor? If you have GERD there's medication for that. >>22111425This is bait. You almost got me though, too many scotchfags really are this insufferable.
>>22110929The fact that nobody ever talks about hard liquor here anymore is an indicator how dead this board (and website) is.All that's left is either old health conscious millennial people too old to drink without complaining about some bullshit, or the odd youth obsessed neo-puritan zoomer that thinks anything above 6% makes you some kind of uncool boomer. The fun alcohol generation is done
>>22110929new releases that actually intrigue me are far and few between these days and the rate that I see them in my area is even less. was reading about de minimus and its supposed to go back to how it was around this time next year. I'll be surprised if I have bought more than 6 bottles between then and now.>>22111790I'll drink to that.
>>22111558Lol you're overreacting and reading shit into me I didn't say.I said nothing bad about American whiskey, which I like very much (the consistency is a positive when it comes to using it in cocktails), but there's absolutely more justification to consider fast aged new barrel corn/rye spirit to be in a different basic category to slow aged secondary cask barley spirit than to consider, say, vodka and gin two different classes of liquor. This is saying nothing of the comparative quality of the drinks, which I'm not being elitist about at all.
Sunday dram
>>22111558>This is baithow much do they really have in common?>different grains>different barrels>different flavor>different history, culture>different continentthere is not that much similarity when you think about it, they are both aged spirits that happen to share a name and that's all
I bought a New England barrel company single cask rye and it was ok.
new bottle day! yum yum
>>22111140
>>22114446Damn, I'm jealous. How much did it run you?
Not food or cooking.
>>22114516$275... never see it for srp anywhere. life is short, screw itstill want bourb version
>>22111790Didn't the mods kibosh the al/ck/ threads years ago? I remember there used to always be one on the go...
>>22114446Mitchers rye is trash
>>22111140Nashville barrel company 8 year rye is my favorite rye right now
>>22111790Zoomers be like yo one glass of whiskey every Friday evening? You’re literally killing yourself >stays up till 4am gooning
>>22115004Michters is a scam company in general>logo that takes up most of the front side of the bottle is a fucking still>actually an NDP
>>22115670Michter's has been distilling their own shit for awhile now, chudly.
>>22115679Not the shit anyone cares about. Michters 10 for instance is NDP. “Bottled by” not distilled.
>>22115731>this historical company that used to distill their own stuff, took a break, and is currently in the process of distilling their own stuff can't have a still on the label of their 10 year because Brown-Forman actually is the one producing it (albeit to Michter's exact mash bill and standards, and is then aged and bottled by Michter's.)What will you bitch about when they start releasing their own 10 year batches in the next 2-3 years?
>>22113208Too rich for my blood, looks good though.
>>22115746You’re going to be the one bitching though, this is a classic NDP tale >get hyped through bottling legacy distiller distillate >make your own shit >it’s not as goodProbably why michter’s even scammed their way into the market in the first place. Most people don’t even know they are NDP.
>>22115799>make your own shit >it’s not as goodAll their in-house produced small batch stuff is good though?
>>22111401I can't drink any less.
>>22110929Ardbeg Wee Beastie is on special at my local grog shop; is it worth getting? I haven't tried this or the 10 year old version, but I've heard they're smokey as fuck. Haven't had a nice single malt in a long time.
>>22116402what's ths price on special? the 10 is distinctly smoky(trust the tarry rope note on the label) but the 5 is super peaty as in the taste of phenolic dirt and they use a little sherry to sweeten it up but it's less than effective.
>>22115731>>22115746>>22115799wtf I had no idea that Michters is a NDP. I have no disrespect for NDPs and appreciate the role they play in the market for efficiently finding and getting high quality whiskey to connoisseurs like us. However I don't care for the ones that aren't open about it. Preservation Distillery does the same shit.
>>22116445It's not like Michter's lies, and most of their regular shelfers are distilled by them these days. Homeboy was upset about their graphic design, lmao.
>>22116402Wee Beastie is definitely worth getting if it's on special. It does a very good job of showcasing the layered cigar smoke taste of the peat.>I haven't tried this or the 10 year old versionThen you'll definitely want to try the 10 first if possible and you can get it at a reasonable price. They're both very good, but the 10 is the more refined drink and IMO the single best generally available whisky that exists. If it's a tossup between the two for you then no question get the 10, as the flavors are going to be sweeter and clearer (the same core flavors will mostly be present in the WB, but they're going to be covered up more by the thick and strong distillate and smoke). If I were to compare them to beers, the 10 is like a well brewed wheat pilsner, while the Wee Beastie is closer to a heavy stout. The WB is very good at what it does, but you likely won't know if Ardbeg is for you until you've had the 10.
I'm a bourbon whiskey friend myself
I got lucky and found a Weller 12 year for $55 at my local Binnys. What am I in for?
>>22116973hopefully something better than normal Weller, because that stuff tastes like ass
>>22116973I've never had it but supposedly it's mediocre. And having finally tried Weller Full Proof recently, I don't doubt that.
>>22117061for $55 I'm not gonna turn it down but I would never certainly search for them.
>>22116814700 ml of 40% slop. Do europoors really?
>>22117617Anon, it just depends on the specific release; Woodford has 700ml US releases too (technically they're just worldwide releases that also include the US, but they default to 700ml).
Here is your threadly reminder to not sleep on The Reveries. I have gambled on a couple single barrel 7 and 8 year picks and they've both been amazing. t8ke (pic rel) is a redditor and looks like a fag and plasters his gay nickname all over everything, but in my experience the dude only picks gold. Here's one you can order, I bet it's greathttps://shared-pour.myshopify.com/products/the-reveries-wire-to-wire

Remember about how I was bitching about MI earlier? Last night I went to Walmart and was walking by the liquor section and there were at least half a dozen bottles of Blanton's just sitting there on an end cap. Between that and the fucking mountains of Weller showing up in Colorado, I think the Buffalo Trace bubble finally burst completely.

What is the most flavourful and sharp tasting rum i can get in Europe. I need it for baking and most rums i own aren't strong enough. I tried Smith & Cross Wray & Nephews, Plantation Dark and OFTD, Bacardi 151, Appleton Estate, Havana Club 7 and some others but none were as strong as the cheap rotgut swill you can buy here that's made from like 5-10% of the strongest dunder flavoured concentrate out there adulterated with 90-95% neutral alcohol.
>>22126527I'm visiting Colorado and found a store with Stagg for $90. Thought about getting it because I've never even seen it on a shelf before but I already have enough mediocre BT products tbqh

Whisky wise this summer I've mostly been drinking scotch and sodas with a cheap bottle of Famous Grouse desu. Lots of ice, lemon garnish. Refreshing and delicious.

Apparently the tariffs on scotch have been lifted hopefully that means the local stores get some fresh stock on their shelves
>>22129831yeah no shit. it's been slow and when shit drops it's some sub 10 year thing for $150 after tax.
I bought a bottle of the willet 4 year purple top to see what it was about. It’s an ok bottle but is worse than wt 101 so that’s about all you need to know.
>>22130321willet markup is wild. you have to pay theu thr nose to get to good stuff. a single barrel they have sometimes is nicer
Went on a little night walk out to the local grocery store earlier. Got this bottle for $7.83 after tax/fees, lmao. Was at 56% percent off I guess. Haven't heard of this stuff, and am not expecting anything luxurious for the price (it was listed at $15.99). With that said, I haven't had any bourbon/whiskey in months, so I'm looking forward to this cheap, simple pleasure.
>>22130425>>22130321They get absurd as you go up in years.Anything over 8 years gets to be $$$. I think i paid $450 for my 11 year. >>22113208

>>22129831I have never seen a laphroaig cask strength in north florida/georgia area and it makes me sad

I did some whiskey shopping today while in Colorado. Every single store is loaded with BT products but I passed on most of them, only picked up the A107 to drink in my hotel room. One store had an Elijah Craig C922 that I'm considering going back for. I'm most excited to try this Root Shoot and the Stranahans CS.
grab bt while u can. i know CO and AZ are drowning in bt but Sazarac dropped their distributor and this was the last week for many to get BT and they are dropping all of their inventory around. new distributor starting on Mon, but no idea how much product they will be able to get. a definite change
it's my birthday :) opening the macallan double cask 15 year
>>22131951But are any Buffalo Trace products really that good beyond the hype? The only others I considered picking up than the A107 was Stagg at $80, EHT BP at $130, and ER12 at $100. All seemed overpriced though.
>>22131962Same, but I got really high instead.happy birthday to us anon.
>>22131967those are all overpriced yes.stagg 51BP 64ER12 37Blantons SFTB is gud, but i like Gold betterRock Hill Farms is gud. Barrel Proof n Stagg are always gud.
>>22131951you can always just, you know, buy bourbon from a producer who doesn't create artificial scarcity to FOMO people into buying their mid overpriced products
>>22131951(((Sazerac))) can’t help themselves. They need a new scheme to try to inflate their secondary prices now that the bubble has burst. Oh well this is just a limited availability now we are changing distributors so things are going to go back to being scarce again. You couldn’t pay me to drink their slop it’s awful.
B-bros I think I'm going to fomo for the $80 Stagg. I've thought more on it and the price seems reasonable for a 7-9 year (but NAS) bourbon. Especially if it's as good as people claim.
>>22131967My rule of thumb is that barrel proof BT products are really good and definitely worth getting at MSRP, while the 90-100 proof stuff tends to top out at "above average."
>>22132409Stagg is not good very bland. If you are that interested buy it but you will be disappointed.
>>22132396oh i do. ill sip most anything. except chardonnay finished whiskey, hate chard. unless its from stainless steel

I couldn't believe how bad weller 12 was. It tastes like special reserve. This must be made from the reject barrels at buffalo trace. I should have listened to this board, I thought I was getting a good deal at $80 because I never seen it for sale at under 100.

I do find them to be over-priced though, and then add in $25 for sharedpour shipping.I'm assuming you're the one who posted T8KE's SMSW listing last thread.I've got a wall of bourbon from my coronachan tater days that I need to work through. Now I'm being selective and have moved on to scotch. For tequila, I get Kirkland anejo and mix it with Tropicana OJ. Cheap and delish. If I ever started drinking during work, tequila sunrises would become a problem.
It's been a year since I did my mini Bourbon Trail trip, here are my tips based on what we did:>#1 priority should be going to Whiskey Thief (the farm distillery); you get basically unlimited tasting straight from the barrels, can fill your own bottles, and it's in a beautiful location in a big barn with food trucks and whatnot>Wild Turkey is fun too, good tastings and nice history lesson>Heaven Hill's "You Do Bourbon Experience" is as close as your average Joe can get to doing your own barrel pick, and their Elijah Craig barrel-proof rye is fucking great>The restaurant at the main Jim Beam campus is really good and has some good tastings>Four Roses has probably the best, most interesting tour >Buffalo Trace is a stale, corporate experience, skip it unless you're a tater trying to get hype bottles (you probably won't anyways)
>>22135004I should clarify that I did the tour of the Four Roses warehouse and bottling facility, not the actual distillery
I miss it. It tastes like a wood building covered in snow in winter. You can just tell that cold, shivering people made it. It's the only one of the popular inexpensive Japanese whiskeys that I really enjoy.
>>22134994Yep that was me. I’ll stop shilling his picks , sorry guys. I’ve only been into whiskey for a couple of years and get excited when I find something I really like. And at this point I also have way too much whiskey and should be way more selective. I fucked up recently and told some coworkers I have over 100 bottles of whiskey and now they probably think I’m insane or retarded. Maybe both.
>>22134993why would u pay that much, anon? are you real wealthy or somethin?
>>22135095LOL, i'm ashamed to say I ended up picking a bottle of that from your review. I don't have a membership and I've wanted to try one of their picks. Shill away, I personally don't give a fuck. My last pick up was two bottles of Oban 15, pic related, at Costco.
>>22133705niceits a shame about the slop label

I don't have anything against MGP or sourcing per se but with their price points and the amount of variety it's just not something I see dropping money on. It's the same with stuff like Barrell, they just put out SO much product that I can't see how anyone has the money or patience to figure out what's good and what's not.
>>22138800oh these boozers definitely have the money and autism to try everything. can join a club and they all share tasters with each other. but i totally hear you. too much other good stuff to try first.TKO are gone now, are going for over 3 hundo on auction, I need to taste it. cool background story about it
interesting read from a while agohttps://whiskyadvocate.com/rare-character-whiskey-company-overview
>>22138827I have to imagine that the barrels they're getting from the Kentucky distillers are "rejects," and I think it's actually a pretty genius business model to snap those up and make something out of them. If Jimmy Russell thinks such and such barrels are just a little too funky or weird to get mixed in for batches of WT101 and you can get them cheap, there's a chance it'll be to someone's taste and then you have something interesting and unique. And if you do that over and over again, you'll get some duds but you'll also get some gems. From an individual consumer perspective, it's not worth it experimenting but it makes a lot of sense if you're one of these blenders.
Finally found Glenallachie sold locally.Shit goddamn. Glenallachie 12 >>>> Glendronach 12, and I say that as someone for whom Glendronach was my favorite Scotch.Shit goddamn that is a sherry bomb. Welp, that's the new default babby's first sherry bomb rec.

Outstanding and I’m really not a fan of bourbons/ryes/scotch etc.It was so smooth and caressing on the tongue in the start with gentle floral/honey taste but really latched on at the end of the tongue to give it some potency
>>22139189lol yeah its none of those things so80 proof huh
>>22139248>has never had a tongue latch on to give potency
Is this stuff a meme? It's thin, boring and a waste of $75. Hard truth's 3 year old sweet rye is better than sagamore 10 if you try them back to back.

>>22139653I mean, it's 125 proof, and it's a willett, so already on the spicy end of the spectrum.
I'm still laughing at the idea of a cask finish in cherry blossom where only the barrel heads are made out of cherry blossom. That's so fucking funny. I've never even heard of a "finish" covering only 25% of the barrel. Still though they're probably right that dimwitted weebs will buy up this 100 USD bottle because oooh cherry blossoms, Japan, le cherry blossoms.
>>22140690>>22140680given the potency of new oak, for example, i see no reason that new cherry blossom wood couldnt be very effective and the proportion of the new wood heads on a neutral barrel might be all you need to get the desired effect.so unless you want to drop some science about the aromatics of cherry wood, chill out.

Acetone burn taste is shit. Treating spirits so that they have nice flavors that cover that up is good and one of the main reasons to age shit in the first place. Yes, you can have whisky with all kinds of strong flavor that isn't just vaguely sweat/light, and that will come off as 'smooth' insofar as long as it doesn't taste like cheap vodka.
>>22141459Most whisk(e)y doesn't taste like acetone.It's a fucking worthless descriptor. Period.
>>22141464>worthless descriptorI feel the same way whenever someone says a bourbon has notes of cinnamon. >>22141459>Lol, if it was actually any good, they'd have made he whole barrel out of the stuff instead of doing the absolute minimum they could to have an excuse to put it on the labelno, not how it works.
>>22141566but it does have a cinnamon note
>>22142098That is how meme cask finishes work, anon.Do you seriously think they were simply trying to accentuate the distillate, or did they think that slapping cherry blossom tree on the label would make people buy a Japanese whisky? Especially considering the fact that it's 6 year old malt distillate in virgin oak, which would take over the flavour anyway. And the tasting notes from the anon who posted it map perfectly onto heavy unintegrated cheap cask. He just memed himself into thinking that tasted good because it's expensive and Japanese.

I love The Macallan and I'm tired of youtubers parroting the same abstract bullshit about value for money. They charge more because they have superior cask selection. Every year, I get together with two of my good lads and we stay the night together at the Marriott in Downtown Toronto, drinking specialty whisky and smoking Spirits while we discuss how our lives have been the past year. This year the whisky of choice was a nice bottle of Weller (seen in the background). Usually these things are quite expensive but one of my friends (the one with the Bocchi keychain) was able to grab one off a guy in the area for 50 bucks. Guess he didn't know what he had! Anyway it tastes great, gives me a hint of hazelwood and grapefruit. Anyway what whiskys do you all recommend we try for next year?

>>22143173glendronach is great but the macallan is godly. the macallan 15 year absolutely crushes glendronach 15 year in complexity. glendronach 15 year tastes like water. nobody gives it a fair comparison. people can only harp on about the same tired argument about one being priced higher than the rest of the competition but it's literally best in class at its age statement>>22144285nonchill filtered glenlivet is a win. i'd never pay significantly over msrp though, on principle

Macallan is sorely lacking in flavor intensity compared to Glendronach or Glenallachie.Your post is not worthy of a (You).
New Anon jumping in here to disagree with you both - i didn’t care for macallan 12 Sherry because I found the Sherry influence intense to the point of it being sickly sweet almost like liquid candy - only time that’s ever happened to me and I drink a lot of Sherry finished whisky
>>22144452your palate is a joke and you make assumptions based on abstract reasoning rather than what you're tasting in your mouthyoutube reviewers are an echo chamber. nobody wants to have a wrong opinion and lose credibility. it's completely rampant in every whiskey topic. hurr durr wild turkey 101 evan williams white label best value whiskey, durrr macallan costs more than the competition, hurrrrrrrrrr if it costs less than $36 it's a mixer. blhurewhreurhhh buffalo trace is overrated. this tastes like vanilla and caramel, did i get it right? wanna hear my definite opinion of a bottle after 1 sip before i let it rot on my shelf for 10 years while i sample every other whiskey for more content?and you're all just like them
>>22144480No actually I posted exactly what I tasted in my mouth.
>>22144465That's because Macallan's sherry casks are low quality and lacking in the non-sweet flavors you'll find in other sherry casks (like dark chocolate notes or the non-sweet parts of the dark dried fruit notes).
>>22144465>I drink a lot of Sherry finished whiskyJust finished? How about exclusively sherry cask aged?

>>22144540Yeah one day I’ll give em another shot but it just wasn’t my thing >>22144543Definitely both I didn’t mean to get too specific there. Bunnahabhain 12 cask strength is probably in my Top 5 All Time and I think that one’s all Sherry maturation. Also a big fan of the Signatory Vintage stuff which typically goes in that direction with a lot of their bottles
>>22144540>Macallan's sherry casks are low qualityobjectively false
Because Macallan owns its entire supply chain in Spain, their casks are built, seasoned with sherry for 12 to 18 months, emptied, and shipped directly to Speyside on a tight, pristine timeline. They don't sit empty in humid Spanish bodegas long enough to rot, so they never need to burn sulfur candles inside them. You will literally never get a rubbery, burnt-matchstick off-note in a bottle of Macallan.
So now we've got a paid Diageo shill and a paid Macallan shill.Lovely.
The shillposting is somehow an improvement over the pointless shitflinging that usually goes on in here
>>22139694I opened up and tried my Dettling bourbon last night and I'm now pretty sure the entire brand is just a meme. I immediately noticed the nose has a lot of ethanol like a young spirit. And it tastes young as well, with some chocolate malt, strong anise, and an hint of red fruit. The Kelvin barrels they use do add noticeable quality and toasty notes. It's not bad whiskey, but it's definitely crafty and way overpriced.

Since I normally just complain about disappointing bourbons here, let's change it up for a Monday. Knob Creek 10 year rye is pretty damn good. I wish they would come out with a barrel strength to pair with the upcoming knob creek 12 bs.
Sipping on Balcones Texas Rye Single Barrel. New American Oak => Pinot cask => ex-bourbon cask, 60 months total, which is more like 10 years in Texas heat. 58%.Fucking lovely. Are there distilleries/categories that you always try to have on hand and keep stock at all times? I don't have a huge collection but I like to have at least>1-2 Beam bottles, at least one age-stated (i.e. KC12)>1-2 WT bottles, including a Rare Breed or something similar>a couple of barrel proof and/or barrel picks from JD, Old Forester, Elijah Craig, or Larceny>1-2 high rye and higher proof bourbons like OGD114 or Four Roses single barrel for old fashioneds>a "premium" and high proof rye like Willett 4-year or a Sagamore for Manhattans>a Speyside scotch>a peated scotch>an Irish whiskey for people afraid of flavor
Had another pour of the Peerless 10 year tonight. I have to agree that it's a fantastic pour of bourbon. It's easily a 8/10. I followed that with a pour of Reveries The Deep which is a strong 9/10. Initially I didn't like this bottle but after a couple of months it's become a perfect dessert bourbon: sweet, velvety, and decadent with a great chocolate note on the finish. I'll stop shilling for this brand if they ever release something bad, but so far everything I've had of theirs has been fantastic.

I'm really interested in whiskies that are different from what you usually find. So instead of barley, rye and corn, I am interested in wheat, oat, triticale, etc. I know they make wheat whiskeys and wheated bourbon, but don't know much about oat or triticale or others.
