You can thank “Energy Star” for things like this. Modern appliances don’t use enough water to clean, or electricity to heat-dry properly anymore. There was a time when cleaning the dishwasher/clothes washer was an oxymoron and clothes always came out dry the first time in a dryer cycle. Thanks to “efficiency ratings”, you get disgusting buildup in the dishwasher and wet dishes that have been “heat dry”, musty washing machines, and damp clothes that your $1000 dryer’s sensor says are “dry”. Also, these appliances will die in less than 10 years, while your mom’s are still going past 30.
My own dishwasher gets black sludge around the seals and in the bottom. The heat-dry coil died, so I took it apart, and there was black sludge caked down around the drain filter and sensors.

you're supposed to put softener (kosher) salt in the water softener and adjust the regeneration frequency depending on your water hardness

empty dishwasher, hydrochloric acid, dilute to 10%, solution of about a 1/2 a cup, pour into salt container, then directly into a running dishwasher cycle.
run several cycles so none remains, it'll soften some plastics, the nylon filter on the inlet of the dishwasher for example, so don't try to add it from there

you're not supposed to rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. scrape off big food but don't rinse because the soaps use enzymes to dissolve food and without there being anything on the plates the detergent and enzymes can't bind to anything and don't clean as effectively. do your research and you'll find cascade platinum plus are almost always the #1 recommendation from sources that actually tested and ranked different brands.
