I am going wild camping soon with some friends, will have a little camping stove for 3 nights and 4 days. What kind of food should I bring? Are there any good MREs/freezedried camping foods now or should I try to cook some kind of pasta/rice dish and just dump a tin of sardines in tomato sauce ontop?

I'm a big fan of bear creek soup mixes because you can hold back the water and almost get them like a chili consistency and they're super light and they have tons of different kinds. I'd recommend pairing with some thick Wasa crisp bread crackers. You also can't go wrong with preserved smoked meats, nuts, raisins, candy (not chocolate that shit will melt), and protein/granola bars.

It's only 3 nights, you can bring real food.

Steaks, bacon, cheese, eggs, sausages. Finish off the raw meat by night two and have smokies or something more stable for dinner on day 3.

Mountain House are pretty decent meals, a bit expensive for what you're getting though. If you can bring a pan and store bought dry ingredients like pasta, potatoes, dried or canned meat, bottled eggs, cheese whiz, etc you can even bring seasoning blends in baggies or jars and make something good too. I've never had a bad mountain House meal, but again it's basically hamburger helper levels of food that just needs hot water.

Are you camping next to your car or hiking in deep?

Actually this anon brings up a good point, is this car camping where you're camped out right next to your car or are you backpacking in and out with everything on you? That will dictate what you can safely bring.

if you're car camping and have a good cooler, you can easily do what >>22121567
suggested and just load up on ice packs and bring in meat cheese and eggs and good bread and make some damn good sammiches and breakfast etc.

Plus stuff like fresh veggies and fruit. Obviously double check the area so you're not dealing with aggressive bears and whatnot as that will probably not work, but yeah car camping makes things a lot more flexible.

If you are backpacking or have to have stuff that's storeable in a bear cannister or locker, then yeah Mountain House is pretty good if pricey meals and they should fill you up. Maybe some bougie ramen too for midday snack-meals.

Other good stuff, some protein bars for general snacking, jerky/jerky sticks, dried fruit/nuts for extra energy, and electrolyte powder for general hydration.

Some basic crackers. Good as an edible spoon, but you can also crush them in your hand to thicken up and stew. And some hotsauce.

Also, bring some condoms. Lil spread'n'spit and tickle'n'tips with the bros is fine, but do it safely.

bring some ramen cups they are just like dehydrated mre's, just add hot water and you will be rewarded with a delicious combat effective meal. semper fi, dude!

You should ask your friends what they're bringing and what kind of /out/ing it'll be.

If it's long hiking you'll want to stay light and eat heavy stuff first.
If you're making proper food you'll need to do dishes and clean pots. Might be easier to make same food for everyone.
Nuts, dried fruit, chocolate are high cal low weight.
Oats and peanut butter is goid. Also vegetarisn foods. You can dry food yourself. I haven't tried that yet.

If it's car camping lr chilling just bring whatever.
Don't run out of fuel

There is no reason you cant bring fresh food for the first couple days of a trip, or even more durable things like hard cheeses and meats for further on. For a first and second night most of the time I cook like I do at home. Or do things like packaged rice and pasta things where you add other food to them. Or go places where you can catch fish or forages berries or shrooms.

But that all requires supplies and effort and more carry weight. For a first time I would reccomend freeze dried meals for dinners/breakfasts and having some samdwiches and energy bars and trail snacks and apples and shit for lunches.
I like backpackers pantry and alpine aire much more than mountain house.

And whatever you do, do not get MREs. They are for grunts who just need calories and sugar. They way worse for you and way less enjoyable than a hot freeze dried meal. Military shit is for a mission, not a person.
