I have a foolproof recipe for making basmati rice in a pan, but it could be better. I also suck at making jasmine rice. Really good rice is something I've always wanted to make, and I don't mind buying an appliance if it makes really good rice consistently.

Rice cookers are generally made for japanese rice, not basmati/jasmine, though they do often have modes for them (or generic mixed/white modes).

For example, the model you posted in the OP image doesn't have a dedicated jasmine or basmati cooking mode.

If you eat a lot of rice ---> YES

If you don't ---> NO
>>
>>22121774
Ah, I had no idea. I eat basmati rice the most often, as the dishes I make the most often go best with basmati, like chili and Indian curries. Also, basmat is the most widely-available and affordable rice I can find.

Is Japanese rice a specific variety, os it simply shortgrain rice? Are there any Zojirushi models that have a basmati and jasmine setting?

>>22121777
I eat rice at least once or twice a week, so it would make sense for me. However, it's a dealbreaker if rice cookers can't make good basmati/long-grain rice or jasmine rice, as those are the most common types of rice I eat.

They have a webpage where you can look up your specific model and it'll give you instructions on how to cook it (what mode to use, and ratios)

I don't think any of them SPECIFICALLY have a dedicated basmati mode. Most of them will tell you to use the white mode, with a different water ratio than the line in the bowl given in cups (of the included rice cup, not a regular US cup).

It'll also generally ask you to use less than the maximum amount that size rice cooker says it cooks.

So mine is a 5.5cup model and it tells me to only use 3 cups of basmati at most.
>>
I don't get it. Nigga just wash your rice and cook it. What's the point of the machine?
>>
>>22121796
That's good news - thank you, anon.

I don't mind if there isn't a dedicated function. I thought that the absence of that function and also this anon's comment >>22121774 led me ti thunj they wouldn't be suitable for basmati. But if there are official recipes, then that's okay.

Do you find the official recipes are good, or mediocre? My expectation is that rice cookers, once you nail the recipe, will be able to produce near-perfect rice. For example, if it's basmati, it creates individual grains.

>>22121800
Partly convenience, mostly for getting consistently good rice. I can make good basmati rice, but I suck at making jasmine and shortgrain. I also want to free up space on my stove, and also to be able to just set the rice cooker and forget it.
>>
>>22121785
>I eat rice at least once or twice a week, so it would make sense for me.
Not worth it, then.

If you ate rice everyday, then yes.
>>
>>22121811
Just follow the instructions, dumbass
>>
Generally people say "No" but I think they're very good if you don't want to babysit your rice and you're inexperienced, or if you're short on burners. I have no stove, I have an induction cooktop and a rice cooker, so it works for me.
>>
>find rice brand you like
>wash it
>follow cooking instructions
>eat rice

Fucking throw in some tumeric if you want to make it yellow. It's not that difficult
>>
If you eat rice frequently it's a huge difference maker. Just press a button and have rice that's cooked properly. No need to fuss with your stove or burners.

I also use mine to poach chicken on top of rice it's very good.
>>
Yes a good mid-tier rice cooker is worth it.

You don't need to spend $200-$400 on some Zojirushi Fuzzy shit.

But the $20-$30 walmart brands kind of suck.

I got a Cuckoo rice cooker for like $50-$60 and it works great.
Before that I had an Aroma rice cooker. It lasted me like 10 years and then the non-stick surface started to wear off.
>>
>>22121774
>Rice cookers are generally made for japanese rice, not basmati/jasmine, though they do often have modes for them

For my Zojirushi cooker white rice and jasmine are the same. There is no setting difference. Your picture is the same. I just put it on regular. I use the big bag of Sam's club jasmine rice.
>>
I am never going to buy a Zojirushi rice cooker, and because you keep spamming this brand here, I now hate this brand.
For the rest of my life I will tell people not to buy this brand. I will make up lies about it and slander its reputation.
Go to hell, spammers.

Based turmeric rice enjoyer
I have a mid-level cuckoo and it's nice being able to just throw rice in there and know it'll come out perfectly, ready and waiting for when the curry is done.
>>
>>22121769
My general rule of thumb is that if you have to ask, no, you don't need one and you won't use it. I've lost count of the number of whites who asked me for rice cooker advice and a few years go by and I'm at their place and notice there's no rice cooker in sight in their kitchen and it turns out they used it twice and put it away. If the rice cooker isn't permanently on the counter and plugged in 365 days a year you don't need it and are just wasting money and space. People who will use rice cookers already own one, people who won't, don't need to research it any further than knowing they don't need one.

>>22121999
Zoom zoom think zojirushi is some newfangled tiktok brand being spammed, adorable.
>>
>>22123205
NTA. I have no doubt zojis are great but are they worth the price premium over a middle-of-the-road rice cooker?
>>
>>22123385
Zoji also makes middle of the road products, and high end and low end so it's really hard to answer that. But I've been using the same rice cooker every day for close to 20 years now. In light of that, a price difference of $50 for a slightly nicer product doesn't seem all that crazy. But we all have our ideas of what's "worth it" so I can't say if that math works for you or not.
>>
>do you want rice that tastes like a chinese restaurant made it -->YES
literally boils down to this
even with six quadrillion features the primary use of a zoji is having carry out rice whenever you want
>>
If you eat a lot of rice and you're not worried about calories, then a good one could be worth it. Though the zojirushi's the well to do japs buy are unusable without a 240v outlet.
>>
>>22121769
I use the jasmine quick setting on mine for basmati and it works really well.
>>
>>22123742
nips run their electricity off 100v not 240 fagtron
>>
Just cook it in a pot
Sure, it takes like an hour, but it's not hard, just really cumbersome
>>
>>22123742
Is there a good cheap zojirushi for a family? Or is it premium or bust
>>
>>22121769
They are worth it if your time costs money.

Remember that most of /ck/ is actually on disability, or they live with their parents, or they are in some sort of group home-assisted living situation, or they live alone and they have no one in their lives, which makes cooking rice in a tin pot like a medieval Chinese peasant an attractive proposition.

They will then sneer at you for not doing things the hardest and 'cheapest' possible way, because their time costs less than nothing; the government will pay them to stay home because they'd fuck things up for any employer.

Mitsubishi rice cookers come equipped with a long-grain rice function that allows you to select and cook varieties such as jasmine and basmati rice, but they are likely sold only in Japan.

This is Tiger’s top-of-the-line rice cooker, compatible with 220V to 230V, which was released back when Chinese consumers were snapping up high-end Japanese rice cookers.
It cost over $1,000 at the time, but since nobody seems to be buying it anymore, the price has been dropping.

>>22124103
anything with English text on it isnt a high end model, thats an export model for faggot gweilo
>>
>>22124105
This is a model designed exclusively for affluent Chinese customers.
The labels are in English and Chinese.
By the way, it also comes with a warranty valid within China.

By the way, this is the successor model, but it’s only sold in Japan.
The price is currently around $1,000; rice cookers purchased by ordinary people in Japan generally cost between $100-$200.

Zojirushi makes simple, single button models that work great and are affordable. Technology Connections made a video about how they work, they're a cool idea.
They're nonstick too though. I think I've seen some that use stainless. My rice never stuck to my steel pot when I used it, though it was a little harder to clean.

>>
>>22123868
That is the correct setting for your model.
>>
>>22124210
The quick setting gets better rice than the normal setting for it.
>>
>>22124508
pretty sure all the "quick" mode does is cut out the initial pre-soak and the post-steam rest is shortened.

The main "cooking" difference is instead of slowly warming up for 5-10 minutes during the pre-soak, it just starts going to a boil ASAP.

Basmati generally WANTS to be a bit firmer anyway, so yeah, the quick setting is going to give you what you want.
>>
>>22121769
We asians don't even know how to cook rice without one. I can't even cook risotto because I don't have any clue what is al dente state of rice. Tbh cooking rice takes too much time I don't even want to have trial and error.
>>
the people who eat the most rice in the world all use rice cookers
>>
Cooking rice is like the single most simple thing you can do, and even on /ck/ people advice you to get an unnecessary machine to cook one of the most simple things in the world to cook.

Woah so hard! I NEEED to buy a 300 electric rice cooker that just takes place in my kitchen to do this!

There is a story where the Zojirushi executives went on a trip to Louisiana because they were getting a lot of sales in that area. They saw the massive rice fields and realized this place was producing and eating more rice than all of Japan!

Since Iris Ohyama (Iris USA) has built factories in Wisconsin, Texas, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, we might soon see affordable rice cookers hitting the U.S. market.
Iris rice cookers are generally considered to be “not bad” in Japan, but they’re probably better than older Zojirushi models that only use Micom control or cheap Chinese-made ones.
The models are divided into three tiers—high-end, mid-range, and entry-level—with prices in Japan ranging from about $50 to $160.
Models with IH technology start at around $70, while those with pressure IH start at around $90.

if all you care about is long grain rice, don't buy a stupid expensive japanese rice cooker. there are better things you can spend money on to elevate your cooking game. cheap single setting one is fine, all you want is basic consistency to dial it in.

There is rice cooker thread on /ck/ at all times, and in every one of those threads there are numerous replies recommending Zojirushi brand rice cookers.
The mods here may not be wise to your tricks but I see right through them.
Fuck off with your rice cooker spam.
Actually just fuck off 4chan entirely.
I hope you get banned again
