There's a bunch of trustworthy shops listed in the rentry that's linked in the OP.
Usually people buy chinese teas from western facing chinese/taiwanese shops because they're cheaper than domestic vendors. However, some domestic vendors offer nicely curated starter/sampler packs and fast shipping.
Stuff like Yerba is probably fine to order off an amazon warehouse or some domestic specialist.
I don't know much about japanese teas.

On my monthly quest of giving new teas a go I haven't tried before, I went with Hojicha this time.
I know it's technically low quality sencha, but it was rather pleasant. Then again, I have yet to taste a low quality sencha that was genuinely awful.

The past two teas have been young shengs and if this one is too I'm gonna cancel my subscription. Have you tried W2T's club? I was subscribed for a year and was very impressed. Sometimes a whole cake of a classic (admittedly raw puerh) tea, but sometimes it was fermentation experiments, sometimes it was just the earliest green tea they could get their hands on in Spring. A little pricey, but there is value in tea being delivered to you without you having to think about it. It was always sent with a full page letter describing something about the tea or how the tea was processed, discovered, etc. A stark contrast to what Paul usually writes. Picrel.

That's what I was after. I went with the EoT club because I really like their aged sheng offerings, that's my favorite kind of tea and (along with teaswelike) they're my favorite vendors of it.
But anyways even if the next tea is yet another young sheng I'll email them and ask if so much of one type of tea is typical or whatever before I cancel it. But if I do cancel I'll consider the w2t club, or maybe I'll just set myself a monthly reminder to buy a few samples from wherever.

Okay, the deed is done. I received about 200€ worth of second hand tea from a nice guy who chatted me up on my local craigslist equivalent. By the end, I was maybe 90% sure that he wouldn't drive over to rape me with a rusty screwdriver or take my money and ghost me, so that was exciting.

Guy has a pretty big collection and was looking to get rid of the cheaper cakes and stuff which he doesn't really like, like budget Xiaguan cakes, Oriental Beauty and Liu Bao, which was awesome for me since I'm looking to expand my /tea/ knowledge that is currently really limited to budget Shou and some few examples of Sheng and Oolong. Also cheap ebay greens, but I don't think that counts as knowledge.

Anyways, I'm currently on the second steeping of a Xiaguan 2011 "Golden Rhythm" and it's kicking my ass. Smoky on the front and gives way to a nice sweet and dry aftertaste. I'm all huiganing up over here.

Very good budget cake. It supposedly uses aged maocha from 2005 so it tastes older than 2011. Has a smoky bbq flavor with some tart fruitiness, overall makes me think of some kind of stir fry or grilled meat on a stick with a few tart peaches included. I think it's smoother and easier on the stomach than some of the similarly priced Xiaguan tuos I've had, might be more humid storage

These days I try to buy samples from taobao, but not many factories make samples and if they do, its in that minidisc format that I hate.
Some vendors sell 7g samples of regular cakes, but 7g is one session and I would like to have at least two(it's also more expensive than I would like).

Got like 200g of 4 different Farmerleaf oolongs, 40g of 70s, 80s and 90s LiuBao, half a XG 2012 8582, a barely opened XG 2010 Purple Cloud, half of the XG 2011 Golden Rhythm, a mystery 90s tuo, full cake of XG 2006 Ye Sheng and XG 2005 8653.
And a bunch of samples.
It's tempting to try them all asap, but I think I'll try to stick to maybe a couple teas until I get to know them a bit.

This is good, thick mouthfeel and strong relaxing body feel. Flavor is just balanced very soft mellow sheng, not bad but not the star

Rye bread, cocoa, some red fruit. Solid robust black tea

Well you already know because I've been posting about it friend. My daily drinker 2013 xg BXZ, Awazon MH51, YS xg sweet, PC LangHe 7599 601, 5 year old snoozefest(as that'll be dropping soonish). Pretty sure I still have at least a kilo of other years sitting around so I might skip again.

it's good value obviously, but not massively better value than some of the cheap farmerleaf cakes
