How old do you think you should be to participate in /cooking/? Is the kitchen too dangerous for a kid under 10?
If it's supervised by an adult, then no. Granted, what children consider "cooking" is probably differnt from actual cooking, hence the supervision.

WHenever they are physicially able to safely handle whatever they want to use.A pot of hot water is heavy. But cutting some carrots or frying it by simply putting in the oil with a spatula and turning around - perfectly fine.The earlier they learn that a knife is not a toy and thar the stove is hot the better.Much better than trying to forbid it, which makes it attractive and interesting. Letting them handle the knife themselves and make it clear that the carrot it just cuts through could just as well be their finger and THAT'S why they have to be careful or that the oil and stove is hot that THAT is why no playing alone in the kitchen.

When I was 4 or 5 years old I was allowed to make myself an egg sandwich. I beat the egg in a small dish and microwaved it. I don't remember when I was first allowed to use the stove. My dad did most of the cooking so there wasn't any "women's work" stigma preventing me from participating. I would cook dinner for the family on occasion as a teenager.

Eventually, I was measuring it myself. By seven or eight, I was cooking with fire but with supervision as well as chopping things myself. By nine, without supervision.The first thing I made without supervision was either corn chowder or deep fried potato croquettes. I made both around the same time but don't remember which came first. Not the same day, mind you. Two different incidents.Both times, I was hungry, no one was home and I rifled through mum's recipes and followed them. Each time, I made enough for parents and brothers for when they got in. The croquettes annoyed my mother because she intended to roast a chicken with potatoes that night. Below the age of 10?Probably no knives or heating elements.Really, practice and supervision is the key factor, you need to be familiar with their familiarity before you set them on their own. But actual height is also a huge factor. Like, I really don't want you fucking with the stove unless you're actually tall enough to stand above it on level ground. Stools are as much of an enabler as they are a hazard in the kitchen if you're short.

There's this lady in tiktok who lets her 3 year old cook on induction (not hot to touch) while supervised, shows him how it's hot and what to do etc. It gives him a ton of agency and helped him not be a terror since toddlers realize they have like no agency and freak out. I'm all for it.

Children should be taught to cook as soon as they can be trusted to understand that they shouldn't touch a hot stove. I would imagine that's around 5 or 6? Supervised around stovetops or knives until like 7 or 8 probably.

While I am glad to have grown up learning how to cook, I feel like a missed out on having a family that cooked for me as a child. To answer your question, kids should be able to be in the kitchen around the time they have the strength and motor skills to pour water in a glass of water with only a single hand (If you pay attention, toddlers have to put their glasses on the floor and pour the liquid with two hands).
