My father was an acceptable cook. The only thing my mother knew how to do was broil steaks and microwave potatoes. They made me start cooking around 10 once a night, then twice a night when I got good. That ended on my 16th birthday when I got a job and couldn't be their maid anymore.
Both of my parents are amazing cooks, but very different in approach. Dad is a by-the-book recipe kinda fella and mum is a creative wildfire kinda sheila.

This is my dad's bumfuck grill situation and, he sucks so bad. He tried cooking a pizza like this and it wasn't edible but he insisted it was great. The worst is he's smoking something in the weber, using whole ass logs no charcoal or anything. Comes out with this black coating of tar which he says is the "smoke ring", and then he gets pissy when nobody eats any of it because we don't to eat carcinogenic bumfuck BBQ

I hated lamb, beef, any chicken that wasn't breast meat, rice, you name it... but I would have home-cooked meals at friends' houses and it was actually good. Took me a long time to realize that my mother was just a terrible cook. When I started cooking for myself that was the game changer. Mom even started getting jealous of me and telling me all my food was terrible and that I was doing everything wrong and she would even get mad at my sister for loving it when I cooked. The better I got, the more I would want her to taste what I made and she would outright refuse to even taste it. That was ages ago though and she eventually started hovering around the moment she saw that I was cooking, wanting to grab a plate asap.She really was a bad cook though. Bad habits, bad preparation, gave no care or focus on what she was trying to make, no knowledge of fats or how to properly season... overcooked everything and baked the shit out of anything in the oven until it was dry and unpalatable.

Apparently he had never cooked a single thing in his life before then (he was in his 50s when my grandma died).
