Alright, I want to give eating canned sardines a try. Ive seen a lot of threads about them, but never paid attention to them, so figured why not give it a whirl. I know Nothing about them. Can anyone give me a run down? LIke, whats the best, worst, mid? Eat it straight up or with crackers or something?I'm not picky at all btw. Fill me in
>>
They suck and are for poors.
Run away. Fast!

So I have ate them a couple of times on a whim. I thought they tasted pretty good for the most part. Supposedly they can provide you with some nutrients. I almost never eat seafood because its so expensive, figured this might be the best alternative. Although I have heard of someone eating these every day and almost getting mercury poisoning....i think thats what it was.

Anons are trying to bait you into giving yourself gout. Avoid deenz. You shouldn't eat more than 1 tin per month.
>>
>>22148122
they're literally just fish. just eat them however you think it sounds good to eat fish. it's not that complicated.
>>
>>22148122
Pro-tip: Rinse the cans before you throw them away. I tried them for the first time a few weeks ago and I actually liked them quite a bit, but then I smelled the trash can one time after throwing some away and the smell was so putrid I swore off eating them for at least a few months.

Quality ones can be eaten straight, but I like dumping them into a bowl, mushing them up, and having it on saltines, usually with a condiment (mayo, mustard, or hot sauce).

King Oscar is probably the standard choice that gives you decent quality without having to overpay. If you DGAF and want cheaper, you can get Beach Cliff, Bumble Bee, and Chicken of the Sea for <2 USD per can.

If you find bones and skin icky, you can get boneless and skinless 'dines, but these tend to be drier and less flavorful so I personally avoid them.

There's also different kinds: brislings/sprats, which are small and tender (usually 2 dozen to a can), and pilchards, which are bigger and meatier (usually about 4 to a can).
>>
>>22148122
Try not to think about how you're eating tiny fish vaginas, eggs, and sperm glands.
>>
>>22148122
I like the King Oscar Spanish style sardines, they're a safe bet for your first. Nuri has some in tomato sauce that are great, Bela has some in lemon that I like. I haven't seen Nuri or Bela on store shelves since C19. King Oscar is your best bet for middle of the road fish. I like them on crackers but if I don't have any or I'm just being a lazy fuck I'll eat them with chopsticks or a toothpick. Don't get the oil on your clothes, it'll be on your clothes until the day the sun explodes. Another Anon said to rinse the tins before tossing but I just pack a paper towel in there.
>>
just grab whatever is in your supermarket. Ideally not in water, olive oil is good. Sardines are yummy, they come in a variety of sizes but all will be beheaded, some will be gutted, others will be 'filtered' basically kept alive in a tank for two days so they poop everything out and then it's ok to eat them whole.

mackerel are also exceptionally good and imo have a much better taste
>>
I just can't do deenz. Kipper snacks and everything else are fine but I can't do bones and shit
>>
>>22148122
the keywords for sardines are BRISLING and OLIVE OIL. at least for a first time canned fish consumer who may not like the larger, more fishy sardine fillets
>>
canned herring is better
>>
>>22148122
Bro you picked the worst time to get into deens. The price has literally doubled across the board this year. You'd be buying at the peak.
>>
>>22148137
>I have heard of someone eating these every day and almost getting mercury poisoning
I don't believe that. They're low on the food chain so they don't accumulate mercury in the same way larger fish like tuna do.

I like toasted sourdough slices, but saltines work fine too. Maybe some hot sauce or horseradish, maybe even spicy mustard. If you buy a can of whole sardines you will be eating organs and spines. It's totally safe but it grosses some people out so there's no shame in getting skinless, boneless sardines. Honestly, I tend to prefer smoked oysters or herring for canned seafood but I'll eat a can of sardines once in a while when the urge strikes. Great source of Omega-3.
>>22148536
This. :((
>>
"Brisling sardines" aren't sardines; they're a completely different species, more closer related to herrings. The name "sprat" is more accurate.
>>
>>22148137
>Mercury poisoning
you get that from too much tuna
apex predators like tuna accumulate a bunch of mercury from consuming everything lower than them on the food chain for their entire lives, which only contain trace amounts
>>
>>22148163
is POLAR any good?
>>
>>22148536
they're not gonna come down in price. things only ever increase in price steadily between giant price hikes. the only thing that'd make them drop in price is if literally everyone stopped eating them and the deenz started reproducing 5x as fast
>>
>>22148828
This is technically true but if you look up actual cases of mercury poisoning from tuna, its exclusively fishermen eating literal pounds of fresh tuna every day. Nobody has ever gotten mercury poisoning from canned tuna. I've eaten it every day for years.

Every body is different, no sense in taking that risk when there’s plenty of good options

I can wholeheartedly recommend nuri spiced sardines in olive oil. very very good. they are pretty expensive unfortunately.

rub Dawn dish detergent firmly into the oil spots, launder with laundry soap
spots be gone.

*unless you've laundered and dried the shirt a half dozen times already. You fool.
But I digress.
Will try those Nuri spiced.

Right out of the can, maybe with a little hot sauce is quick and easy. Fork them onto a cracker for some added crunch.
Or dump them into a large bowl and break them up some, add some minced garlic, crushed red pepper, black pepper, and whatever herbs sound good. Maybe some tomato or diced red bell pepper. Toss with some pasta (I like penne) and you've got dinner.

i wanted to grab some at the store however deiced to pass and went with extra sliced cheese>>22148122 however do enjoy outdoors having a good sardine..

king oscar jalapeno are $2.50 a tin where i am but that is the only kind that is ever stocked
not eating chinese ones

>if you look up actual cases of mercury poisoning from tuna, its exclusively fishermen eating literal pounds of fresh tuna every day. Nobody has ever gotten mercury poisoning from canned tuna
why lie about something so easily verifiable? everyone who's ever heard of mercury poisoning from tuna has heard about from people eating canned tuna too often

Nice tits, but I fail to see how this image is relevent.
>>
You might need to try a few brands before it clicks, the taste varies a lot. As for recipes I usually eat them off the can with crackers, in a salad, with rice, in puttanesca pasta, or in fisherman eggs.

the deenz not being gutted when they're so large is somewhat distressing, but neat nonetheless
>>
why are deenz in stores always low or out of stock? it wasn't like this a few years ago

try getting into smoke sprats like Riga Gold, superior to regular sardines

How are you surviving the deenz shortage? I was at Kroger today and most brands were sold out. The few that were still stocked were about double their normal price.
>The NOAA assessment estimated the Pacific sardine biomass will be at 27,547 metric tons by the summer, significantly less than the 150,000 metric tons needed to reopen the fishery to commercial fishing. Any fishery at less than 50,000 metric tons is considered to be overfished. The assessment estimates the sardine biomass was around 1.8 million metric tons in 2006.

The cheap sardines taste like crap and won't be good unless you mix them with something.

Sprats in oil are great and I like them enough to eat them straight.
>>
>>22148122
The sardines with tomato sauce can be used directly on rice, noodles or pasta. The sauce usually has some herbs and spices.
I just boil up some pasta spirals, stir through a can of picrel and maybe some olives and pepper, maybe sun-dried tomatoes, and dinner is ready. Very tasty!
The SE Asian brands tend to be sweeter than the European brands
>>
I'm more of a canned tuna kind of guy, spread on toast and topped with some of that kaviar stuff outta a tube is my go to snack when drinking
>>
are rapeseed deenz shit tier or not that bad
>>
>>22148137
The fish is safe because it’s low on the food chain
>>
>>22149947
humans are truly a doomed species. All we can do now is stock up on deenz and try not to think about how aliens probably aren't going to invade and be better rulers than any human could ever be.
