I prefer bourbon. I know scotch is "more complex" and all that stuff people like about it, but I just find myself going for bourbon way more. I have more fun and enjoy bourbon more. I'd take a bourbon over a scotch any day UNLESS it's a really peaty Islay scotch like Ardbeg, then I'd prefer that

Also, it's nice for a hot day, sitting on the porch with friends or with a cigar.Scotch, like you said, is too complex. I used to have a glass when I smoked, but stopped because I miss too much. Scotch is best had on its own, later in the day, either by yourself or with one or two close friends. I usually don't pair Scotch with food, but exceptions can be made for certain desserts, namely vanilla ice cream or something spiced and apple-based.Irish whiskey is best for teens.

Snobs just circlejerk about the weakest nuances they can taste in boring ass unsmoked scotch aged in boring ass bourbon barrels. Every aged rum is more interesting than that.

Bourbon will always taste oaky and sweet with flavors like molasses, caramel, and vanilla often feeling prominent. Scotch varies more and some will have oak-notes, but there's a bile-quality, initially (in a good way, though, like with bleu cheese). From there, you generally get peat and malt and, depending on where it was made, it might be any combination of fruity, floral, honeyed, smokey, or briny.

Young cognacs (or brandies in general) are still fruity while old ones lost their fruityness but obviously got much more complex.Armagnac is similar to cognac but cheaper and slightly different. Spanish brandy taste completely different. Less fruity and floral. More dark notes like chocolate or coffee. Similar to rum but heavier. Calvados is also worth trying although not an actual brandy.
somebody told me that scotch tastes like campfire ashes and peat moss, so I decided to never try it.
