going to a fancy chinese place on the strip tonight. the wine list looks like it might be expensive as fuck and the cork fee is only $40 but idk what to pair with Peking Duck
>>
you drink sake with that type of shit
>>
>>22152622
that's japanese
>>
>>22152616
Why are you asking this gaggle of retards and not the somm at the restaurant
>>
>>22152653
I'd prefer to avoid the hassle of lugging an expensive bottle of wine to the strip only to be told by the somm that it would pair poorly and then having to order an even more expensive bottle from the restaurant's winelist.
>>
>>22152758
>Bring your own wine
Make sure the place you are going to is cool with that and you will probably pay a corking fee.
>>
>>22152763
I can bring up to two bottles from my cellar and the cork fee is $40/bottle (compared to paying +$100s of dollars per bottle ordering off the winelist)
>>
>>22152616
Gold capsule auslese riesling with a little age on it.
>>
>>22152616
To answer the question Pinot Grigio for white, Pinot Noir for red.
>>
>>22152765
Sounds like a good idea then

>Pinot Noir for
...anything, really. PN is the best all-rounder in the game of wine.
>>
>>22152616
Former wine manager here, no idea what Peking duck tastes like but I dont think you'll go wrong with good sauv blanc or pinot noir. Blanc is usually my goto recc for birds but the single time I had duck it seemed similar to pork which has me going in the noir territory. I think Id be scared to go heavier into the reds but other whites might work too
>>
>>22152781
it's a very fatty duck that's been heavily seasoned and glazed for a long period of time. they usually serve it with a sweet dipping sauce, a cucumber slice and this rice paper roll you wrap everything in.
>>
I have always wanted to try peking duck, but where I live, there is a zero percent chance unless I go kill a duck, and prepare it myself
>>
>>22152799
>a sweet dipping sauce
The origin of duck sauce?
>>
>>22152801
no it's a darker fermented bean sauce similar to hoisin
>>
>>22152799
I think the acid in blanc could cut the fattiness, its usually my default wine but it might be my personal preference. Maybe consider albarino. Otherwise noir is probably still your best bet for a red imo
>>
>>22152780
I absolutely agree, it is my go to red
>>
>>22152616
Consensus appears to be Pinot Noir anon.
>>
>>22152616
shouldn't it be Baiju
>>
As the first ethnically Chinese and Mandarin speaking MW, I don’t believe in pairing Pinot Noir with Peking duck, despite its popularity. Pinot Noir is quite linear and thus doesn’t necessarily hold up to the greasy and rich mouthfeel. My top choice is Spätlese Riesling, instead. Nice acidity with more residual sugar should go perfectly with the duck and the sauce.

In the realm of red wines, I suggest a ripe Clare Valley Shiraz or a nicely balanced Crozes-Hermitage Syrah – fine tannins and non-assertive acidity are key.

Have a few Pinot Noir. A couple Etna Rossi and a Saxum Syrah. Leaning the older Etna on this one
>>
Yeah I'm gonna go with a Riesling here boss

Do you have a wine room in your house or just drink them often enough to rotate them out? Been to a few wine rooms from resellers and collectors, feels like something I might like once I get to upper middle class but I've also noticed the AC giving out fairly often and it seems like a pain in the ass to fix. My liquor store maintenance guy would just show up with a sandwich and whole bottle of ketchup and eat in the backroom for hours and it always kept breaking down. At my college the AC gave out during summer one year and spoiled the whole collection without anyone noticing, we just kept all the bottles of spoiled wine for display to guests and I got to spend an entire evening dumping wine down the drain but I dont think it was ever fully replaced

i have a cellar that holds 84 bottles or 250 bordeaux bottles if i want to be autistic. currently I'm sitting at around 60ish bottles, mostly Barolo/Barbaresco, Tuscany (Sangiovese and Supertuscan blendss), and Rhone blends from both new and old world. Sprinkle in some Burgundy, Loire, Sicily, Umbria, Campania, Napa, Central Cali, Oregon....

ended up pairing with a 2023 Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet and then the 2018 Pietradolce Archineri

lol lmao even
>>
>>22154951
How did it go?
>>
>>22152616
>going to an expensive restaurant to eat roasted duck
>researching expensive wine to pair with said dish
Eating out for me usually means getting chicken tenders and coke. I'm not hating, it's just like you guys are basically aliens to me. I don't understand, nor can appreciate wine. Box wine, cooking wine, 100 year old wine, it's all the same to me
>>
>>22155170
well, glad i went with something firmer than a pinot noir
>>
>>22152616
Something dry and crisp to cut through that 69% grease bird
>>
>chinese restaurant with $40 corkage
Damn
>>
>>22157373
The good chinese restaurants are in big expensive cities. $40 is not that big a deal in places like that.
>>
You're looking for a gewurztraminer.
It pairs well with flavorful asian foods.
Most people in this thread are fucking retards who don't know how to pair wine.
>>
>>22159118
>gewurztraminer and riesling bro! they go well with the foods in that region encompassing every single climate zone known to science with 5 billion people spanning the outskirts of moscow to some indonesian island full of sentient lizards!
Asia is a country, everyone who disagrees with this statement doesn't know SHIT about wine, thanks pro sommeliers what would we do without your genius advice
>>
personally, i wouldve went for some chinese beers. do as the locals would. perhaps with a ciggie too
