>local sushi in akasaka (tokyo)
>onigiri from konbini
>conveyer belt (sushi-ro)
All just OK and not bigly different from good US sushi. Wrong places?

No offense man but your entire post reeks of retardation.

They started giving you the shitty cuts when they saw you were a gaijin giving your sushi a soy bath.

In spirit of the board.

The sushi in question. Wasn't mind bogglingly different from a sushi dinner I had upon return. The conveyer belt was terrible, not even wrapped correctly.

why do zoomers need their mind to constantly be boggled
>>
>eat convenience store onigiri, conveyor belt sushi and end up at some tourist shithole in akasaka
>yeah man japanese sushi just isnt all its cracked up to be
genuine moron
go on tabelog, find a small place that specializes(not necessarily omakase, which i find to not be good value for money most of the time) and ask them for recommendations(Osusume, wa nan desu ka)
if you want a better conveyor belt place, Toriton or Nemuru Hanamaru are going to be much better quality

That's like judging sandwiches based on what you find at a gas station.

>nemuru hanamaru
Nemuro Hanamaru
also, step away from the generic fishes, theres nothing wrong with salmon/tuna/ebi etc but the real good stuff is things you wouldnt usually get on the menu at a sushi place in the west, Kohada is one of my favourites

I don't why you'd expect sushi in Japan to be all that different from good American sushi. The world is so interconnected now, you don't actually have to be in a cuisine's country of origin to find high quality food. Sushi is sushi, there's not something magical in the air of Japan that makes it taste better. I'd say the average quality is probably better in Japan, but if you're used to eating in good sushi places in America already, then yeah, you're not going to have your mind blown.

Because ramen there was so astronomically different. In its ordering process, availability, price, and taste. It was literally a world of its own. Trying to find something equivalent within driving distance in somewhere like Connecticut is non-existent.

Well sushi is just more popular. Ramen never really caught on the same way, except for instant cup kind of stuff. Even then, there is plenty of great ramen outside of Japan. Maybe not in Connecticut, I don't know, but I've had great ramen in Toronto for example. It can vary by location. You're not likely to find very good sushi in some flyover state without access to good seafood, you won't find good ramen everywhere either.
Anyway, I agree with others that you just need to seek out better places. Convenience stores and conveyor belt sushi are not the best Japan has to offer. They have their cheap, convenient, subpar food just like any other country. Lots of mediocre ramen in Japan too, sounds like you just avoided it. I've had some really good sushi in North America, but the best I've had was in Japan. I just wouldn't expect it to blow your mind or anything, it's still sushi at the end of the day. Lower your expectations a bit and you'll probably have a better time.

you have to go to some shack in gunma where a pensioner has spent his entire life mastering how to put a slice of fish on rice. thats where about 90% of the value comes from.

This is a well worded, good meaning post. I'm honestly at a loss for words. Thank you for contributing quality content to this website, anon.
