You gotta keep in mind the time they came out.
They were the first of those cookies way at the early 1900s, the chemical names of oxygen and hydrogen to normal peoples ears probably sounded very different compared to today, very sciency and cool and high tech. They chose the name to evoke purity and cleanliness.

When I was a kid, my mom bought every off brand sandwich cookie there was (those were probably on the list). I went to county jail at 28 and bought Oreos off the store. I'm not sure if it was my first time eating them, but it FELT like it. No off brand cookie I tried approached Oreo texture and flavor.
There's a lot of close off/store brand items (I love me some Malt O Meal), but not for Oreos.
