Having said that in the early 1980s (Yes - I'm a coffin dodger) we did have an American import called Colt 45 that apparently was a Malt Liquor and reminded me of bananas for some reason. We Brits have never been known for lagers, up until the late 1970s we mostly drank Ales, Bitters, stouts. etc. Germans as far as I am aware, have always drank lagers, so I have no idea why they did this, perhaps post war they didn't want to market anything as German? IDK
