Xylitol (artificial sweetener found in gum and some jams) linked to strokes and heart attacks.

Do I have to throw away my big bag of xylitol gum?

wait isn't that the stuff that's supposed to be good for your teeth and mouth bacteria?

Apologize.

>The researchers also highlighted that the association was independent of underlying factors such as body mass index, hypertension, diabetes and lipid levels, which might predispose people to low-calorie products.

Yeah it kills bacteria because they can't actually digest it. I wonder if that means it has negative implications for your healthy gut bacteria though.
>>
>>22175787
I like xylitol gum because I want to keep my breath fresh. Gum sweetened with sugar causes bad breath. This is not a diet thing.
>>
>>22175787
I think this is the takeaway. That was the thing with "diet sodas cause strokes and heart attacks" 20 years ago -- it wasn't the artificial sweetener, it was that the people who rely on artificial sweeteners tended to be the ones with higher risk factors (diabetes in particular).

Also, T1D people don't have syrup for blood, especially nowadays with CGMs and insulin pumps. One of my neighbors 30 years ago told me "there's never been a better time to be a diabetic" what with the then-recent inventions of insulin pumps and slow-acting insulin, and it's gotten MUCH better even since then. Pretty soon they expect to be able to cure T1D completely by transforming pluripotent autotransplanted stem cells into beta cells and implanting them back in the patients; they've figured out everything except how to prevent the body from killing the new beta cells.

Us T2D types can sometimes have syrup for blood, but I've kept mine controlled for nine years now with the keto diet. For a while I even had an A1C so low that a doctor was shocked when I told him I was a diabetic.

I got xylitol on my dick, I'm stroking my shit
>>

And it really hurts the ol chompers. I have to quit coffee and cut down on sugar because man it's rough in my mouth zone. I drink coffee all day at work, and I'd feel really strange bringing a toothbrush. I've been considering caffeine pills, does anyone take them regularly? I'm scared of consistently taking them

>I think this is the takeaway.
It's not, good researchers will take it into account and the article mentions it wasn't related to obesity. So that probably means obese people who consumed less xylitol had less strokes/heart attacks or they found evidence that normal weight people still experienced and increased risk.

>Us T2D types can sometimes have syrup for blood, but I've kept mine controlled for nine years now with the keto diet. For a while I even had an A1C so low that a doctor was shocked when I told him I was a diabetic.
Awesome. Some people seem to think diabetes is permanent or uncontrollable. Were you overweight and lost it? Although people can still become diabetic without weight gain. Does your blood sugar still go above 120 when you do consume carbs now?

>Researchers looked at 17,710 people and compared the 25% with the highest levels of xylitol in their blood against the 25% with the lowest.
Okay yeah in this case this is 100% junk "science" since they're not even attempting to control confounders.
>For a while I even had an A1C so low that a doctor was shocked when I told him I was a diabetic.
He was "shocked" because you are definitionally not diabetic but he didn't want to start arguing about it. As the other anon said, T2DM is usually (not always, maybe ~90% of the time) completely reversible before it starts causing coronary artery disease and kidney disease.
>>22175832
No, they used a weasel word here - "independent of". They never said they actually controlled for it.
>>22175824

Caffeine pills are actually generally going to be safer than the equivalent amount of dietary caffeine since it's a pure distilled form without isomers and contaminants. Note that a caffeine pill is going to have a much higher dosage than a cup of tea or coffee would. But again, here you can also be a bit safer since you know EXACTLY how much caffeine you are taking, whereas tea and especially coffee can vary dramatically in caffeine content, even cup to cup of the same stuff.

There has been a fuckton of research on caffeine for a very long time now and it's rather conclusively established that for most people, anything up to 400mg per 24 hours is completely safe. Really it's more like 600 but 400 is a safer number. And then a lot of people have decreased sensitivity to caffeine too.
>>
>>22175832
Type 2 Diabetes is only “permanent” if you continue eating a high-carb diet with grains and goyslop every day. It’ll go away completely after a few months of keto-carnivore. At which point you can go back to (reasonably) eating carbs. Fruits twice a week, grains once a week. Milk is fine daily if you can handle it
>>
>>22175801
>>22175805
You're not meant to swallow toothpaste. Some amount will get absorbed or swallowed but those are minute quantities. Chewing xylitol gum is more controversial since most of the sweetener does get ingested.
>>
>>22175820
>they've figured out everything except how to prevent the body from killing the new beta cells
So they've figured out everything except how to cure diabetes, if you could stop the body from killing beta cells you wouldn't need to transplant them in the first place.
>>
why don't they just make gum without any sweeteners in it at all? I don't need flavor I just want to chew shit.
>>
>>22176159
you can buy mastic gum.

>Xylitol (artificial sweetener
It is NOT artificial.
>Xylitol is an organic compound
>It is sometimes also called birch sugar as it can be extracted from birch wood.
>The name derives from Ancient Greek: ξύλον, xyl[on] 'wood', with the suffix -itol used to denote it being a sugar alcohol.
>>
>>22175633
>the gum I buy has that shit
Fucking hell, what else can I do about bad breath other than brushing my teeth constantly, which I don't always have the chance or time for at work?
I do brush my teeth as often as I can of course but I always feel like the bad breath comes back an hour or so later
>>
>>22175633
Probably the usual scaremongering bullshit from the media, like eating meat or burnt toast, where the "higher risk" is like 1%

>Awesome. Some people seem to think diabetes is permanent or uncontrollable. Were you overweight and lost it?
I lost some of it, around 25-30 pounds. I hit a plateau very soon and couldn't go under it no matter what I did.

>Does your blood sugar still go above 120 when you do consume carbs now?
Yes, still was even when I had an A1C of 5.4 again. Keto didn't eliminate the insulin resistance, it just reduced it to the point that it wasn't so severe that my blood was turning into syrup.
>>
>>22176086
>Okay yeah in this case this is 100% junk "science" since they're not even attempting to control confounders.
Yeah, I had no idea what that "xylitol in the bloodstream" stuff was. I assumed it was just the "science journalist" being a typical scientifically illiterate J-school graduate with DEI-approved melanin levels.

>He was "shocked" because you are definitionally not diabetic but he didn't want to start arguing about it.
Not really. I told him I was diabetic, he ran some tests, came back laughing and said "no sign of diabetes". He was quite happy for me. There was no "fuck you you were never a diabetic" or "fuck you you're a diabetic", more like "holy shit wow this guy actually took it seriously and massively improved his health".
>>
>>22176146
You're a solid example of Dunning-Krueger, my man.

Once the beta cells are killed they don't magically come back on their own. So yeah, they had to figure out how to make more. Then they had to figure out how to implant them. Now they have to figure out how to stop the body from killing them again, so that the autotransplant stays functional for the long term. There would still be a "need to transplant them in the first place" because they're not going to deal with every single person ever born just on the off chance that they develop T1D.

Also, there are many T1D cases which were not caused by autoimmune or infectious-disease problems. A friend of a friend ended up with T1D because of a reaction to a medication he was given. If he were alive today, or even a decade ago, they could do the stem-cell autotransplant thing and he'd be fine again. But he probably died at least 20 years ago because he was pretty old already and T1D tends to shorten life expectancies.
>>
>>22176498
>I do brush my teeth as often as I can of course but I always feel like the bad breath comes back an hour or so later
This is often a sign of a rotting tooth. A friend's sister-in-law had one, it was a black stump in her mouth, and holy shit did she have awful breath all the time.

Xylitol is natural, it can be found in many vegetables and also the bark of some trees.
>>
>>22176779
>>22176793
that's true but it's only in tiny amounts naturally. you're never going to eat a lot of xylitol except with chemical processing.
>>
>>22176794
>that's true but it's only in tiny amounts naturally
That's true of loads of what we eat.
Oranges weren't sweet until we bred them for ridiculous amounts of sugar.
Rice used to give one single grain per stalk, once a year. I think wheat was the same.

I see: " Jews want you to eat sugar "

You should only brush (gently so the bristles are straight) like twice a day anyways, not after eating. After eating you can rinse your mouth or use floss.
>>
>>22176086
the sell caffeine pills in many different dosages. you a 100 mg caffeine pill will likely have less caffeine than a cup of strong black coffee.

>>
>>22176913
Yeah but sugar and starch are still naturally found in higher amounts. We have enzymes to digest them. We can't digest xylitol and it's possible there are side effects to consuming unnaturally large amounts of it.

>it's possible there are side effects to consuming unnaturally large amounts of it
There are side effects to the consumption of the unnaturally large amounts of carbs, protein, sugar, and everything else we eat.
Even if you ate a raw paleo diet, you'd still be eating unnaturally large quantities of and proportions of many nutrients that are technically essential.
>>
>>22177504
