I figured them out when I thought of them as two sandwiches with less bread instead of one sandwich with more bread. It's understandable to miss this considering the most famous example barely counts as one nowadays but you'll see the next time you make sandwiches. Just assemble a second sandwich on top of the first and tell the others what you saw.
