green onions are goated but fucking European supermarkets don't care about the stem
>>
the grilled onion jockey at checkers forgot my grilled onions once, so i came back and asked for a side of grilled onions. he tossed some of them on the flat top, sprayed some water on them, moved around, they were done in less than a minute. they were great
red onions do have a place

No, they don't, child. Enjoy onion prison.
>>
>>22178550
the yellow ones are sweeter than the white ones.
Red onion... its hard to explain the difference. Can someone give it a go?
>>
>>22178670
oops. meant to reply to >>22178449

>>22178670
Red onions are more oniony tasting and have a stronger onion bite than white and sweet onions. Sweet is mild, white is more intense than sweet, and red has a stronger onion flavor than sweet and white. Red is for onion chads like me who don't want a ton of sweetness.
>>
>>22178047
>reds have their place
Yes, above white and yellow.
>>
>>22178047
I have never seen those white onions before, so I have no idea what they are like.

Red onions are quite mild and they are best eaten raw, with coleslaw or salads.

Yellow onions are a little stronger, in the UK we have two main types:
Spanish onions which can be mild enough to eat raw or flash dry fried so you caramelise the edges but still keep the raw crunch.
And British onions which are usually smaller than the Spanish ones but a lot stronger and can make you weep when slicing them.

>green onions are goated but fucking European supermarkets don't care about the stem
You haven't a clue what you are talking about.
Europe isn't one country, did you know that?
Green onions or scallions, - or as we call them spring onions are ALWAYS sold with the stems.
>>
>>22178670
red aren't as harsh raw like white or yellow. it's why they're more common on sandwiches as an example

nobody can agree on the actual differences and even the same variety of onion can taste different depending on growing conditions. that's why >>22178449

well she’s obviously a kid so she is small but those are indeed big onions as well

nta, but I've also never seen white onions in the supermarket, only "yellow" (it's just a regular onion), red, green and shallots

>>
>>22178763
Most people agree on the differences . . .it's just you.
>>
>>22178771
no they don't. i always hear differing answers on what makes onions actually taste different. and even in personal experience onions vary too much depending on how they were grown which might be why that happens. an onion that was stressed more during growing will become more pungent which means any of them can be more or less pungent than any other.
>>
>>22178777
Give it a rest, have some dignity and just accept you are wrong.
>>
>>22178780
no, there are two posts above giving different answers on what onions have a stronger taste and pungency. i'm going to peel back the layers of this onion conspiracy.
>>
>>22178047
all onions are total shit unless they are cooked along with whatever meat and veggies that are are meant to paired with it, to a point the onion becomes a background flavor and chewy or soft enough to not notice. change my mind.
>>
>>22178786
>change my mind.
No
because you are as much of a cooklet as >>22178783
Thanks for your contribution . . .have a nice day y'all.
>>
>>22178047
There is no meaningful difference between white and yellow, unless by yellow you mean sweet onions which are a different variety altogether.
>>
>>22178763
while i've heard people say red are harsher i think there's a reason why you're more likely to find them in sandwiches, wraps and salads
>>
>>22178837

pretty colors

Red onions with vegetables, white onions with meat, yellow onions for mixed, green onions for soup
Simple as
>>
>>22178449
This, or they're at least close enough to not make any sort of appreciable difference. In a blind test I'd be willing to bet 95% of people would never be able to pick out, for example, which stew was made with white vs. yellow onions.
Red onions are used in raw/pickled applications because they're more visually appealing, that's it. People will say it's for various other reasons but that's the actual one.
I've eaten plenty of onions used in the "wrong" application (and plenty used "correctly") and never once have I noticed any negative effect on the finished dish.

White for burgers
Yellow for cooking
Red for salads

Your not fooling anyone.

This, however, I exclusively use yellow for cooking and red for garnishing

>>22178360
Shallots are the best middle-ground compromise. Small and flavorful but not too pungent. You can throw them in ice water to really tone them down for raw salads and things like burgers. But you can also caramelize them, pickle them, use them as a substitute for yt/yellow/red. They are amazing at deglazing and making a pan sauce.
Only thing they can’t do is replace green onion
>>
>>22178353
same, must be a regional thing, i've never seend white onions anywhere

To me it's just red or any of the others. I've never noticed a difference but admittedly I have never had more than one non-red onion at the same time and I only use them for cooking stuff like casseroles
Hate red

MODS

>>22178047
I use yellows for soups
whites on most other things
red for burgers but I'll do whites on them too depending on the mood
