>be me, 26
>grandma passes in March
>family has worshipped her "secret sauce" for 30 years, entire sunday
dinners built around it
>going through her recipe box to put it in the family cookbook before
the funeral
>find a stained index card tucked behind the actual card
>it's literally just "1 jar Ragù (the one w/ mushroom), 2 tbsp sugar,
brown the meat first. that's it. don't tell them."
>no secret herbs. no "cousin smuggled it from Sicily." nothing
>tfw the family legend is a $3.50 jar of sauce and a spoon of sugar
>mom still does the bit about how grandma "wouldn't even tell HER
the recipe"
>card literally says don't tell them, in her handwriting
>thanksgiving is in a few months

do i drop this bomb on the family or take it to my own grave like
she apparently wanted me to. no bully
>>
>>22178555
just make the sauce anon. don't tell them
>>
>>22178555
I hope she saw your shiny Dusknoir.
>>
Soo how does nobody notice the giant jar of ragu that would theoretically be in the pantry until it goes in the trash or recycling? Was your grandma the only one doing any chores at all?
>>
>>22178589
>recycling
At what point did OP say he was a gay hippie?
>>
>>22178555
if you tell them, you're a psychopath

If this were true, you'd have posted a picture of the card so I'll take Shit That Never Happened for $1000 [whoever hosts Jeopardy now].

Tim Curry.

I mean
Did you personally think it was that good? Or were you humoring her a bit?

>>22178615
That's an upgrade only if he's in full Frank gear, otherwise, didn't Blossom host for a minute?
>>
>>22178628
funnily enough, it actually was good
>>
Hard truth is even if you make it exactly the same way grandma did, nobody in your family is going to say it tastes the same. They'll all say it's not as good. Of course it's the exact same slop, but people need to hold on to certain things and they'll just say it's trash because their emotions led them to.

Your family is hopelessly retarded if they thought a jarred pasta sauce with even more sugar in it was some special homemade secret recipe.

Tell them so they'll all feel as stupid as you should.
>>
>>22178555
yeah my grandma had her famous red velvet cake, we all knew it was basic at best but she made it every thanksgiving Christmas etc. we still reminisce about it. So my advice is tamp down your autism and just let it be

There might be an issue with that...
>>
>>22178555
this whole thing is a fiction but yeah make the sauce and sure don't tell anyone. maybe your grandma is trolling and put the recipe card in there as a red herring

Why are midwestern white women like this?
>>
>>22178555
Don't tell them. Start making something SIMILAR and say you came up with it after testing many recipes but that grandma's sauce was just impossible to make how she did it. It keeps the legend going
>>
>>22178639
This is why you invent a contrived story for how you reinvented the sauce rather than telling the truth. Tell your family in 1 years time that you came back from Italy after finding a small cafe in an unknown Italian village that happened to make the sauce just like grandma did. And that they gave you her secret blend of spices. Hint that it has exotic ingredients and keep that ingredient around as if you use it in the sauce.
Humans like storytelling more than they like the truth, it's why marketing is so brutally effective.
>>
>>22178747
if any of OP's story is true everyone suspects it's jar sauce already. everybody can tell jar sauce even midwestern r'tards

also OP sorry to hear about your grandma

My Polish immigrant mom would periodically change up her recipe for golabki, sometimes using savoy cabbage, varying the mix of ground beef and ground pork, etc. but my favorite sauce she made was her quick easy recipe of just Campbells tomatoes soup, Campbells mushroom soup, tomato paste and half-and-half.

100% tell anyone who wants to know. Offer this after making the sauce so they know you're the real deal and show them the card, just let them know beforehand that it's not what they would expect so they are ready for it. Your grandmother has passed and this may give some measure of closure to family members who can continue to make it can carry on her memory by serving this to their loved ones who are still with us to honor her memory.
Honestly ask yourself if your grandmother would rather her family remember her for having a tasty secret sauce that nobody can enjoy anymore, or if she would want her family be able to bring joy and comfort to each other with this recipe that has become close to their hearts. It is wrong to keep cherished family recipes from those you love

to the grave, but one-up it, try to replicate it with onions instead of sugar, yes slow cooked onions are literally sugar
be a good lad and add garlic, maybe carrots (also have sugar), and red pepper
if you wanna ace it, add minced beef
>>
a secret you can safely keep, just act normal all the time and never commit any crimes.
>>
>>22178555
Sounds like you are now keeper of the secret sauce recipe.
>>
>>22178555
I've spent decades trying to replicate tex-mex cheese dip, sauces, and other shit, even asking restaurant staff and family acquaintances that own restaurants. So many failed cheese dip recipes following their advice.. which in retrospect they were all bs'ing.

Little did I know these cooks are the laziest pieces of shit ever! There is no arcane knowledge or hidden chilis... It's all made from normal american brands you can buy at the grocery store

Cheese dip:
>milk/cream/evaporated milk
>white american cheese (you can use slices of kraft)
>monterrey jack
>canned dice green chiles
>mix heat and stir - american cheese has sodium citrate/sulfate that will melt cheeses that don't melt into creaminess

Salsa:
>canned plum tomatoes
>onion
>canned diced chile's/jalapenos
>miniscule cumin and some salt
>blend

red burrito sauce
>can of tomato sauce
>mixed in half can red enchilada sauce
>mix in 1/2 cup mild salsa
>mix in sauteed onions in butter
>add tablespoon butter
>heat and pour over burritoes
>>
>>22179284
This. Their memories can live on in a very fond way by enjoying meals that they used to cook.
>>
>>22179284
I think it's more interesting if anon keeps the secret of the sauce but cooks it for the family IMO
She wanted it to stay secret so why not respect her wish. Reveal it in your will or a secret card too or something (or pick an heir to pass down the knowledge if it's no longer convenient to keep it alone, e.g. if the family is moving apart to different places etc.)
>>
>>22178645
Throwing extra meat in sauces is a game changer for the way it's perceived
>>
>>22180914
>She wanted it to stay secret so why not respect her wish
Many of her family members probably want to use that recipe to bring more happiness to their own children so why not respect the wishes of the living to bring togetherness over the wishes of the dead to horde a recipe to the benefit of nobody? Every day OP keeps that recipe a secret is a day that that grandmother's family can't honor her memory and legacy through cooking. Just sounds petty and shitty to me and I don't see how anyone could think otherwise.
>>
>>22178555
Improve the recipe anon. Add some salt
>>
>>22178573
This. Is there any other option?

Also don't be surprised if you make it and everyone says it tastes different. The secret was that she was your grandma.
>>
>>22182231
>is there any other option
Telling them so they can also make the sauce.
>>
>>22178555
You're a scumbag for even posting this.
Her food was tasty BECAUSE SHE LOVED YOU, and cooked from the heart.
>>
>>22182281
Why is he a scumbag for asking for advice about something that surprised him?
>>
>>22182292
>Why
You can't read too well.
>do i drop this bomb on the family or take it to my own grave like
she apparently wanted me to. no bully

1.OP acknowledges that Grandma wanted this to be kept secret
2.OP is considering the violation of that
>>
>>22182298
And if members of grandma's family wanted it to be given out(and they no doubt would considering they worship the sauce to the point of building dinners around it), is OP not violating the trust of those other people by keeping it a secret? If OP dolls out the recipe he's a scumbag to one person. If he keeps it a secret he's a scumbag to everyone who would want it to share with their own loved ones.
