The heat of the rice cooker does. You can't put raw chicken in a bowl of hot rice that's no longer being heated and expect cooking to happen.

steaming tray is handy though, you can steam vegetables while your rice cooks or cook dumplings and stuff. and it doesn't need to be a "weird combination" to use a steamer attachment, regular rice cookers steam too. it's literally just an attachment, not some alternate function for most rice cookers.

The zoji are super good and better than the cheapo cookers, BUT the difference in quality is only substantially better for short grain rice. Maybe 50% better than cheapo. Long grain rice is probably only 10-15%. If you only eat long grain rice it may not be worth it.
The other features are nice tho. The keep warm feature will keep rice hot and fresh for 24-36 hours. It holds above pasteurization temps so its totally safe.

You should lynch all of your government officials, especially the tax collectors.

I used to work for an Asian tech manufacturing company that made high end gadgets. Our Australian distributors had us jumping through hoops that were straight up insane, all because of your cunt's tariff policies. Special sales, rebates, discounts, all as forms of tariff dodges, because somehow selling at a price that was lower than "official normal" meant that their tariff rates got changed. But the worst of it was that they insisted we jack up shipping charges from our tiny little corner of hell to Australia, because individual buyers could buy off our website and get things shipped into Australia (at full retail from us, and full international shipping costs for individual parcels) for far less than they could sell items for at retail after dealing with import tariffs and VAT and all the other bullshit.

On the one hand, we had to have actual on-the-ground distributors selling products in stores, because most of you cunts weren't buying off the web. On the other hand, that meant you people got fucked running no matter which way you turned.

Prison Island doesn't even begin to describe it.

how long does it take for rice to be cooked properly?
>>
>>22185493
from cold, bring to boil, reduce heat cover and simmer so low that you don't have to worry about it boiling over (sometimes you have to stir but experts can do this with scuffed steel and still not have to stir for some reason) it's like 20mins from cold to rice. You do need to uncover, fluff, and them steam off a bit before you dive in. It's like 20mins. A rice cooker might to it slightly faster but even my microwave dealie takes 17mins in the 'wave, 5mins to settle and then a fluff and steam-off period which is like 25mins all up
>>
>>22185327

This isn't a rice cooker issue, I have the same problem with a pot if I don't rinse off most of the loose starch granules. It's just easier to manage because you can just turn the heat down and lift up the lid.
I agitate the rice with my hand when it's underwater and let the rice settle before pouring it out. Takes ~5 rinses for the water to be mostly clear and starchy foam problems to be solved.

Depends on how often you make rice. Asians all have rice cookers for a reason: when you make rice every day, it's nice having a tiny machine that does it for you and doesn't take up a burner.
>>
>>22185744
I know how to cook rice on the stove, but I live in a dorm and I eat rice everyday at least once. It's much more convenient and tasty to make it in a rice cooker. Plus, I also cook pasta in it. I learned how to cook short pasta by adding just enough water so it doesn't need to be drained, which is perfect for me. Something else I do in mine is "grill" hot dogs.
>>
why does my rice sometimes absorb all the water really quickly but come out kinda dry?
just used 1.5 cups calrose rice and 2 cups water, let the rice soak for 20 minutes, then started cooking and after only 13 minutes all the water was gone but the rice was not fully cooked.
also sometimes this jasmine rice i bought crackles in the water like its bursting out of its shell.

If rice cookers are so great, how come they're not popular in the ricer cultures south Asia, whose cuisines are objectively superior?

There's a theory where cultures reliant on rice cultivation developed a more collectivised bug-like culture compared to those reliant on wheat cultivation, which explains why norfern chinamen tend to be more rowdy and fiery of spirit compared to their southern countrymen.

I bought one of those fancy weeb rice cookers. Barely use it. Turns out it's still kind of a chore to use. Rinsing the rice takes forever, and you have to make a bunch of batches before you figure the exact ratios, then repeat for different kinds of rice. Sucks ass.

I got a new one a few days ago and am currently cooking some rice in it for the first time, I even washed the rice which I normally don't bother to do for the inaugural cook.

It's much fancier than my old one, it even has separate options for just white rice alone for if you want it sticky, soft or savory (whatever that's meant to mean), setting it to white was simple enough but it took me a bit of random button pressing to change it from sticky to soft

I just heard it beep so I thought oh it's ready, but it was actually beeping to tell me it was 10 minutes until it was ready so you could prepare for having rice, pretty neat feature, the timer didn't appear until it had 10 minutes to go, I guess it uses that detection stuff to know when it's ready rather than a timer but can detect when there's 10 minutes left

My parents' Zoji is from like 2001 and is still going. Admittedly we're white so we only use it a couple of times a week instead of everyday like actual Asians would, which has probably stretched its lifespan some. I bought a cheap one when I moved out with my ex and that shit died in like a year. Things have reversed so my parents are now elderly and living with me so I have that same old Zoji back but if it ever dies I'm tempted to buy the $90 made in Japan Tiger one that Costco sells.

All these guys wanting to know why rice is finicky, and discussing rinsing vs not rinsing, yet not I don't see a single post mentioning toasting the rice first. The water ratio changes if you do (need more water), and it makes for the least sticky rice I've seen, plus it just tastes better. One more thing for stovetop guys to brag about, really.
>>
>>22197408
Yes, toasting (or pearling) the rice in a little oil, as you would risotto rice, makes regular long grain rice fluffier. You can do that in the rice cooker, tho. Personally, I don't like fluffy rice. I prefer moist rice and sticky rice, but that's just me.

Zojirushi is a high quality brand, so whether or not you have an advanced one or a simple push button cooker like the one your parents have is irrelevant. A $90 Tiger is a good choice too.
