Do you guys think it's worth getting a mandolin for making cabbage salad and sauerkraut? I find it hard to cut thin and even with the knife, like the leaves sometimes shift against each other

I’ve never made that stuff but if you do on the regular then yeah I’d say it’s worth it to spend $10-20 on the proper tool
>>
Remove the ribs, stack the leafy parts, roll it into a tight cigar. The leaves can no longer shift. As for the ribs themselves, cut them more chunky, if you like, try to slice them just as thinly or shave them with a peeler.

This, though you don't really need to remove the ribs unless they're especially tough.

Do you just snack on the leftover ribs or dip em in hommus or something?

Cabbage women.

there's no comparing to how thin and consistent you can get with a mandolin, even with knife skills
that being said... raw cabbage salad is delicious, but hard to digest. i finally begrudgingly gave up the raw jap style salads i made for myself, despite how insanely healthy and delicious they were (quick homemade vinagrettes to go with them). how often have you eaten cabbage salad?
if you havent already tried eating it every day for like, 3 days in a row, try that first. i bet you'll get shrekt too
sometimes tasty vegetable dishes can be bad for you
>>
>>22187873
No. Mandolins are dangerous. You'll hurt yourself.
>>
>>22187898
You may also like grated raw beet salads.
>>
>>22187920
i did add beets to it, beets, carrots, cabbage were pretty much the trio always included, and then depending on how i was feeling i'd add red onion slices
i try to avoid raw vegetables now. steam em at the very least
>>
>>22187887
I have pretty good knife skills so I just slice them paper thin and toss them in, anyway. In fact? Anytime we buy cauliflower, I make slaw out of the leaves rather than toss them. It's enough for 3-4 chicken teriyaki meatball wraps
>>
>>22187898
I eat it whenever I go to balkan grills, I can eat pretty much anything

Take this to /mu/ mandolin is a terrible instrument, chick's dig guitarists better. And just buy a knife for your slicing.

One interesting option is to use a Vietnamese peeler/shredder tool. Far easier then trying to move the entire cabbage.

There's also the Thai version which works a bit differently and the toothed grater.

I would certainly use one or the other

May as well, they’re normally cheap. Just be careful

"mandolin" is the conventional way of spelling it in the UK, and "spelling conventions" in English overall are a joke (or joek, or jouc)
you're a musical instrument
>>
>>22187997
Mandolin is just a snobby banjo.
>>
>>22188461
You’re wrong and in any case who gives a fuck about what ‘people’ in the UK do.
