ordered some more aged stuff at QuicheTeas
>>22189995What's the toyota corolla of black teas brands? Like the dependable stuff that will always create a good cuppa of breakfast tea (with milk (and no sugar)), and also is good value i.e. not that expensive?Loose vs teabags is no difference to me as long as it works.Currently I am drinking PG and Tokla Gold, both of which I find rather meh to be honest.
>>22190020I heard some anons like turkish brands for this, like Alwazah. probably depends how cheap you can get them
Is orientaleaf.com the new contender? They got new mengshi rongu cakes. Kingteamall does not.>pic unrelated
>>22190013I've got a 1991 cake i've never touched, I should probably do something with it eventually.
>>22190013the XG Baoyan Jincha is pretty fun, sipping on it now
Noticed some Harney and Sons at a big grocery store in Canada. Tea taste is evolving slightly.
>>22190819My metric is loose tea. The grocers near me have actually regressed. Sometimes I could find loose Twinings, Lipton, or some overpriced small brand. Now it's 100% bags.
>>22190658What's it like? I assume smooth and aged flavor? Never had a baoyan before
>>22190319fuck outta here clanker faggot
>>22190914yea man theres zero loose leaf in supermarkets here anymore (scotland)
>>22191407It's a bit of a bitch to open up, quite compressed. I think I should have divided it into smaller chunks for this last brew. Starts out with lots of firewood and resin, a good bit of tart/bitter fruitiness which starts coating the back of your mouth and tongue during the middle infusions. Some mouth cooling and a good bit of tanninic mouth drying.Later infusions do indeed become smooth and mellow, with some lovely sweetness shining through the ever-present but receeding wood smoke. At least that's my take at trying to describe it. I didn't really like it at first when I bought it along a bunch of smooth and cheap Shou, but it definitely grew on me and I quite like it by now. Must have been crazy strong before the aging.
>>22191509Sounds pretty good. I love the 2005 t8653 I bought from Quiche, it's probably my favourite aged sheng I bought so far (and not the most expensive one). Has a robust woody barbeque flavor, is strong but smooth and has a great texture.
>>22191414sail out to hong kong, becone tai pan
>>22191615might just have to. did get a few cakes in the post today tho ;)
>>22189995I've been getting into breakfast blends. I live in a predominantly coffee/mate country so good black teas, specially loose leaf ones, are harder to come across. Best i've had was Twinings English Breakfast bags and some cheap black loose teas. Really wanna try Irish Breakfast too but it's hella overpriced here for some reason.Anyway, is Dilmah a good loose tea brand? I saw one of their 500g English Breakfast tins for about 30 bux.
>>22191509This puerbian be drinkin charcoal
Idk guys. I keep getting annoyed with tea, then I try coffee... Then realize how bad coffee is and go back to tea.
>>22192482dilmah balls lmaomaybe a little expensive for ctc
where can I get cheap tray for gong fueurope btw
New Farmerleaf releases out, some black teas, oolong, a ripe and some raws.I'm tempted by the raws and cheaper blacks, but I should probably invest my money in other ventures at this moment. Not this time, little french man. Not this time.
>>22193116aliexpress.I just get all my chinese teaware on there desu, u gotta learn how to avoid the low quality shit but luckily most of the basic teaware on there is suprisingly good
that really shit tgy from the last thread was "peridot" was reading the wrong bit of the label didn't see it had a name as well as just the region and year
what's the red string for?
>>22193217You use it to tie the nipple on the lid to the handle. Helps with falling off if you pour it really steeply or something
>>22193221ahhh I seee.I was worried about that happening axtually, the handle is designed in such a way its uncomfortable to hold the lidl with one finger
>>22190610That looks like a pretty good website. I haven't seen it before. Some really great cups in there, too.
>>22193173also, a saleI'm also not planning to buy anything from FL right now, I've been getting more into aged sheng and drinking less young ones

>>22193835you get what you pay for
>>22190020At least ditch the teabags. You’re paying for mostly packaging with the added bonus of toxic shit. Basically any loose leaf will be an upgrade. With that said, you just gotta try some different black teas to see what you like. Try assam, Keemun, Ceylon, or just grab a cheap loose leaf English breakfast blend.
is oolong supposed to be slightly fishy or have I stored it improperly?
>>22196686>is oolong supposed to be slightly fishyno
>>22190020I don't know what sort of price range you are expecting, but even at let's say 5 cents per gram you can get stuff that doesn't need milk. The only reason brits started to add milk into tea is because they started drinking the lowest tier trash in order to not bankrupt the whole country.

>>22198545I find it fascinating how coffee is everywhere. It's like people's lives are build around it.>dont talk to me until I have had my 10th coffee Is strangely accurate. These people are always in the middle of getting the next cup, because surely that one will fix them, yet this behavior is socially accepted for some reason. I swear there are people at work that spend more time brewing/drinking coffee than working yet nobody seems to have an issue with that.
>>22198560its the new smoking, and its not the only way people slack off and consoommy manager has a large circumference and will have up to 5 desk breakfasts in a day
>>22198560Well i did not want to paint all coffee drinkers or coffee in general in a bad light but there definitely is something like you describe here. Work/hustle culture definitely makes people crave their coffee. But its also that many people are oblivious to what "i like to drink tea" means. You dont have to like tea of course but it just shows that someone has not much knowledge about certain aspects of human culture

I kept a gaiwan of ripe in the fridge for a couple days.I drank some more of it just now and it tasted super super mouldy am I gonna be ok?
>>22201524moldy*
>>22201526no, that'd be american english I'm not american
>>22201524Did you spit or swallow? In either case keep an eye on your body. If you have symptoms of stomach upset, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blood from either end, lightheadedness or dizziness, or anything else feels off, go see the doctor, especially if you swallowed that sip. All things considered if you kept it cold instead of letting it sit out for a while, it probably didn't have sufficient bacterial/fungal growth to hurt you, but that's never a guarantee. Just be careful for now anon.
>>22201556oh I drank like 2 whole infusions of it lol I figured the cold wouldve stopped any fungal growth and the boiling water wouldve killed anything that had grown while in the fridge.
>>22201625you will live. i drank moldy coffee and survived even though i am immune compromised. fungus is far more dangerous on animal products
>>22201634yeah i figured any fungus on the tea would be more of the same fungus that was already growing on it before I brewed it
>>22201524It's also entirely possible it just tasted off because it was cold, old, and likely picked up random smells from the frigde. Unless you're 100% confident it was precisely a mouldy taste and nothing else, I wouldn't worry about it too much.Like shit if you had any camembert in the fridge that would probably make any tea taste like cheese fungus after a couple of days
i am drinking my green tea cold brew. it tastes like grass. why didnt any of you warn me that this would happen?
>>22200118Mylar bags for beengs, glass jars for loose.

can i make my own black tea by roasting green tea? has anyone here tried roasting tea?
>>22204254>can i make my own black tea by roasting green tea?No, black tea isn't roasted green tea.Enzymes in the raw leaves turn tea from green to black (oxidation) unless the leaves are heated up enough to destroy the enzymes. Green tea gets heated before it's allowed to oxidize at all, black tea isn't heated until after it's fully oxidized.
>>22204254Roasting tea is called "Hojicha" It's worth trying, but it doesn't create a black tea flavor as the other poster has pointed outYou can do it at home or buy it already roasted
>>22204292oh ok, does it remove the grassy taste?
>>22204371Makes it kind of taste like toasted breakfast cereal. I don't know why, but it's very specific.
>>22204377cool, i will try it. i liked experimenting with toasted grain

>>22204978Is it good? Any comparisons to other FL teas?I'm having autumn lao man E today. 38$ / cake is rather cheap for some fun sheng with good mouthfeel
>>22205160It's nice, but at that price it better be. It's very fragrant similar to mohei if you had that one, but more fruity than flowery. If not the think FZH way but more. I don't notice any special mouth feel.
I cant seem to be able to remember all the chinese tea names
>>22204978would you buy again or consider something else? also are there any structural nuances, like in the finish, that are worth noting? i ask cause my fl jingmai from 2023 kinda died in the finish, like it was zero taste or aroma. supposedly 2026 is a good vintage for tea and i'm curious how fl processed it. worth also setting aside a chunk to see how it develops over the years since 2026 potency, especially with that gushu can age even if processed for earlier drinking.
>>22205271>would you buy again or consider something else? It's just a sample and I wouldn't since I'm not that big of a fan of fragrance heavy teas. If I ever need a fragrance then I have the mohei cake(that one is quite unique tho)>also are there any structural nuances, like in the finish, that are worth noting? Not really. I didn't have anything new to me. I wouldn't say there is some sudden drop off or anything. After few cups there is a slight salivation, and some after taste but mild, nothing unique.

>>22205271>my fl jingmai from 2023 kinda died in the finishwhich one, the Miyun?I think the autumn jingmai gushu is a big step up from Miyun if you care about things like aftertaste and body feel. for not much more money, it was like 60$ this year
>>22204441Without a doubt, you want qian liang tea. Bonus points for golden flowers.
>>22205380fall jingmai gushu, i dont remember what it was like way back then but not very impressive when i had it this year.
stupid or brilliant?
Much talk about Pu-Erh in this thread. Never tried it. How does it compare to black tea?
>>22206296very different, young raw is like green tea. ripe is like smooth thick dirt and wood
>>22206212>beans and leavesid call it: america's neighbours
>>22206212Just tried something like this, with 6g of Xiao Fa and 2g of commodity medium-roast. It didn't make MUCH of a difference, but it didn't hurt.
>>22206212probably a gimmick. I heard some people liked a ripe cake with vanilla beans pressed in, that sounded kind of fun
>>22206296there is a lot of variety with pu-erh because of the autistic aging aspect of it. young raw / sheng puerh is more similar to a very strong green tea, aged raw or ripe is darker and more woody-earthy. closer to black tea but not that close
>>22206476>>22206299Hmm well definitely have to try it at some point. Is there one you recommend for a beginner?
>>22206498if you want the green tea like young raw, try FarmerLeaf. they have samples. could try stuff like tang fang liang zi, huey wa, maybe sample some lao man Eif you want the darker stuff and don't mind buying more of one tea, check out the bestsellers on QuicheTeas. they have the best price to quality ratio. they don't really have samples for most teas though. they also have good cheap ripe puerh, V93 tuo is a good one to throw into any order as it's small and cheap
>>22206522Thanks anon. Will check out the names although unsure if these stores are in europe too but ill try to find equivalents
>>22206535they are not in europe, but it's usually cheaper to order from china to europe if you're buying chinese teabut there are some EU puerh stores too. just not cheap ones
>>22206550>order from china to europeGotta try that at some point then.
>>22206296Puerh autism is basically like wine autism.>minute differences between regions, subregions, individual farms>autistic differences in aging, processing, even which warehouse has the tea been stored in for the last 10 yearsSo in theory no two different puerhs are alike. It's less well known than winefagging, but but it's pretty much the exact same thing as when you go to a fancy restaurant and they bring out the list with 800 different wines and some autists out there can narrow down the specific one they want for their meal.Black tea doesn't have an aging or fermentation step so there's much less room for variety. Indian black tea in particular is super standardised and is all very similar; Chinese black tea does have some varieties depending on the region, time of year for harvest etc., so there's a good few different types you can try, but it's still not infinite different kinds like with puerh and the like.In theory aged oolongs also have a similar amount of variety, and they can be roasted too. But niche oolongs for some reason are not quite as popular and the "tasting" culture for them is not as developed as puerh from what I can see. I feel like oolong is to puerh like puerh is to wine, if that makes sense.
>>22206535Almost all chinese tea is sold directly from china. It's not popular enough to justify western warehouses and storefronts, and international shipping is cheap enough nowadays. And a tea stock can last a long time so waiting 2-3 weeks for delivery is something you can easily get used to.As a result the only western storefronts are basically building a business of "luxury exotic tea", and are selling shit at 400% markup by catering to normies who are too scared to order from a chinese website and can be easily duped into thinking it's premium and rare and actually costs that much. All the stores that sell the tea at actual market prices ship from china.
>>22206556>But niche oolongs for some reason are not quite as popular and the "tasting" culture for them is not as developed as puerh from what I can seeoolong autism culture is also highly developed, it just gets less hype in the west than pu-erhespecially yancha and dancong, they are in some aspects more autistic than pu-erh. oolong people will care about what master made it, what competitions it won, roasting levels, obscure varietals, core areas etc.it's the most developed tea autism culture next to pu-erh. the whole gong-fu brewing originated from oolong autism and was later adapted to pu-erh
>>22206556Sounds kinda cool though. For me even the standard teas already have much variety and i only recently started discovering them more and more. Will definitely try it out at some point soon. So far i mostly drink oolongs>>22206560That does make sense yeah. Although so far im positively surprised of the quality of the stores here. Even physically we have a small cute tea store in my city that has some nice chinese variants
Will China stop selling me tea if I start referring to my titanium gaiwan as a "tiwan"?
>>22206565You will hurt the feelings of one billion people

>>22206565In chinese you would refer to the wrong metal since ti(e)means iron. As for example the tieguanjin
>>22206570Means "iron goddess of mercy" (and i accidentally posted too early)
>>22206556I wish more aged oolong was available to try, there's not that much and often it's kinda expensive.
>>22206576yeah, it's a huge blind spot in the western market. I hope we see more of it in the future. from what I hear in Taiwan it is not necessarily expensive or rare

What's up anons. Enjoying a ba xian dancong with some nitrous. Beautiful roasted rice flavor. Happy sunday yall
don't buy tgy from w2tsipping on their long haul and its just as dissapointing as the super green ones.tastes like its not any more oxidized and they just roasted the fuck outta it. main note is peaches with some light roasted almond notes. theres also some plant smell in there but idk what plant, maybe rhododendron but I'm no sure.its quite nice but for the price its not worth it at all
>>22211710are u inhaling the nitrous or is this some forbidden brewing technique I've not heard of before?
>>22212492Should have just bought from TeahomeOr if you want midroast TGY style oolong there is a box of it on KTM for like 6$. I hear it's a good one

>>22212492>don't buy tgy from w2tYeah I agree.I had the 2nd (more roasted) batch of their three spot guanyin and thought it was pretty good (not better than teahome though) but overpriced.I had a couple of their yanchas and thought they were actually pretty bad, not even just "not worth the price". Some of the only teas that have ever made me nauseous on an empty stomach. And since teahome was mentioned, I've heard it said that they sell good "budget" Taiwanese oolong. But imo their heavy roast legend of tungting is one of the best Taiwanese oolongs I've ever had, period. If any of you know someone who has better high roast oolongs I'd love to hear it and try it, even if it costs a lot more
>>22212603You talking about the charcoal roasted legend of tung ting or the normal one?I just bought these a few days ago. Excited for the aged oolong, I haven't had an aged one before.I know there are actual fancy oolong specialists that probably have better stuff than teahome. But you will have to pay much more.

>>22214400if u don't have a sensitive tummy u can get away with several hours after eating.try after like 16+ hours and you'll probably puke
>>22214411Will do, I'll report back
>>22214409Yeap, it feels like when you go north the line between tea and tisane starts blurring. My uneducated guess is probably because there's no way to grow tea up north and imports had to go further and were likely more expensive (we all know of the mediterranean spice trade ports, not so much the swedish spice trade for example), so there's just a culture of brewing whatever fucking random moss you find on a rock rather than the "real chinese tea(tm)" and it's carried over into the modern world.
>>22214412hmmm I wouldnt exactly reccomend it lol.>>22214414maaaybe. but I don't think so, like frisian tea culture would vehemently reject the wacky bullshit u get in the rest of germany.I'm pretty sure this shit of calling random stuff tea is a modern development and loads of them just fell for hippy dippy bullshit.

How is everyone’s work day?
>>22214781I'll take some legend of tung tung sahur to work tomorrow to grandpa style
>>22214781Quiet start but it's going to go to shit later on in the week when mandated power grid fuckery occurs on my shift and it's just gonna make everyones lives worse until next week. But on the plus side I found a nice thermos and after giving it a really good clean vinegar and baking soda and a good bottle brush I now have a way to get properly heated water into my building for break time tea so that works out really well.
>>22215029How do you get the vinegar smell out of stainless steel?
>>22215059It didn't really linger. But that might be because it was a vinegar solution not a bunch of the stuff poured in. About half a cup in two cups worth of water, let it sit for a little while to break up the old coffee stains, then I kept washing it. First with a baking soda solution then just normal water By the time I was done it didn't have any form of smell remaining.
>>22215073Right, I can see the soda scrub neutralizing the odors.Someone was asking for a 'use case' of hot water flask here before.I see you have some hard hard water, ever tried using a softer one? If you have some expensive leaves in there it's worth a try.

What are your preferences for cheap and frugal tea?I'm low income and can't afford to drink nice tea every time. Also, sometimes I just want a boost and it's more about drinking something and the caffeine. Less about fine taste. For example, in the morning I sometimes just want a strong black tea. In the afternoons I'll drink the finer greens and oolongs. I find the mass-market blends and teabags to be universally horrible. I avoid those.I've found pic related to be very good though. UK supermarket. It's only £2.20 GBP per 125g. The rest of the range (IIRC they do an oolong, assam, darjeeling) aren't good. But the Kenyan makes a nice strong black tea as long as it's not over-steeped.
>>22216286It's not where I live but people mostly drink sweetened black tea or rarely unsweetened black tea. I've rarely met anyone over the age of 23 that judges others for the food or drinks that they consume unless they're hardcore innawoods rednecks (and they only judge you for drinking shit like wine coolers).
>>22216286American "tea" is mostly iced milk tea and associated with starbucks boba tea type foids. This is uniquely american.

>>22217627I'm not an American, but I doubt that's true. I'd say most Americans would think 'ice tea' before boba type milk tea. Asian-americans might think boba maybe. Then there's probably a sub-culture of mentally deranged trannies who talk about boba tea because they're obsessed with hentai stuff - usually the sort featuring children like >>22216286
>>22217648I'm not much of a fan of Indian and Sri Lankan tea. I've always found it much lower in quality vs other regions. I also avoid that region as I'm not confident about the hygiene and quality standards during processing. Plus, even if those were addressed, the pollution in the region (e.g. in the water table) is horrific. I've visited both India and Kenya and can say there is a huge difference. Sure, Kenya has it's problems, but the tea plantation regions I visited were actually very beautiful. The experience made me very cautious about any food product from India. >It's hard to think of something that works out quite that good after shipping costsYeah, the price per 100G is fantastic. It makes it a very good budget tea. It close in price to large volume consumer blends. Not sure how they got the price so low. I'm not sure if they still do the oolong. Only saw it once. That was £3.50 for 100G. Wasn't very good though IMO.
>>22217666Fair enough, given that constraint you might have the best choice alreadyWorth looking at a local asian supermarket perhaps, I've had pretty decent roasted oolongs from them at similar prices, but can't order these online and get the same price/g
>>22217588check if you can get seadyke brand oolongs
>>22217666What about Ceylon? I don't trust India either but is the island the same as the mainland or not
>>22217672>local asian supermarketThat's a good idea. Next time I brave my nearest big city I'll call into the Chinese supermarkets. >>22217676>seadyke brand oolongsI recognise that packaging and logo. I will test some. Thanks.

>>22217679I've never visited Sri Lanka. From what I hear / see, it is supposed to be better than India. Hard not to be sadly. Probably still not great though, so I have prefer to avoid. Also, I find the same price of tea from China is typically far nicer tasting tea. So I don't buy it anyway.
>>22217685>I recognise that packaging and logo. I will test someyeah these are a staple of cheap oolong, should be much better than oolong from western supermarket brands. just note that most of them are quite strongly roasted

Lads, how much volume are you actually pouring per brew in your gongfu sessions? Are you supposed to do 100ml?
>>22219452my gaiwan is ~100ml but leaf takes up volume so each brew i actually get less in my cup. all depends on how much tea you want to drink, if you brew your leaves 10 times thats ~1L. i personally like having a little cup of tea every 10mins or so as i watch anime or gamemost gaiwans seem to be around 100-120ml, you can get 80ml but thats too small and 250ml is too large for me if im not just making 1 single cup of tea
>>22219452Gaiwan volume is generally measured to the rim, but you effectively have less volume because you don't actually fill to the rim (unless you're doing the wet kind of tea ceremony where you spill water everywhere). Plus what this anon said >>22219521 about the leaves. I personally prefer gaiwans that are around 150-180 mL so I can get roughly 100mL of brew per teacup.T(ea). autist
>>22209472>>22209138some thoughts on the 2003 tibetan flame jincha shroom after trying it a few timesI think this is a very mellow and aged tasting sheng that does well in a mug. mostly dominated by a rustic woodiness and even slight beetroot notes, if you like yeeon and liu bao you might enjoy this too. there is some fruity (apple / pear?) element peeking out and if there is smoke it seems very slight in my shroom. there is a little bit of astringency but it's hard / not possible to overbrew itcan't say I'm that impressed with it so far, but it's an interesting thing to try for reference and definitely very easy to drink for me

Hey, shou enjoyer here. Tell me, is the Hong Kong wet storage a thing that will heavily affect the ripes in a more standard way? I ask this because i have a few entry cakes from Sunsing, Haysolon and Yee on Tea and in a way all of them always tend to give me the same notes of aroma and taste. Though i know that for most people all shous tastes the same, i get a bigger variety if i compare with my KTM ones. Is that something that i will only notice once i buy the really expensive ones? Or its a real thing? Maybe i need to compare them together.
>>22221813>Tell me, is the Hong Kong wet storage a thing that will heavily affect the ripes in a more standard wayyeah I'm pretty sure HK wet storage imparts a pretty characteristic flavor on ripes and they will all have a similar profile if they sit in that storage for a while>>22190013this 90s ripe brick I bought recently clearly also has undergone HK storage at some point, doesn't taste exactly like the yeeon teas I have but they have a lot more in common than with other ripes
