Whats the most you paid for a meal? Was it worth it? Did you put it on a CC or pay in 4?
>>
i have a coozie from terry blacks. the bbq is good but i like the coozie more
>>

About $500 for a Birthday meal. No. Not even remotely worth it. It was actually the worst "fine dining" experience I've ever had. All the other places where the bill was under $300 were much better.
>>
Probably paid around $70 for the ingredients to make tamales one Christmas. They fed a lot of people though and now everyone asks me to make them again. Honestly the time to make them is worth more than the money. It's a pain in the ass.
>>
>>22191295
terry blacks is truly overpriced. $91 for 3 chopped beef sandwiches + 2 small sides each and drinks.
>>
>a meal

So, he paid like 40ish bucks a plate? plus 2 beers?

Not terrible, bit high but not a extreme rip off

I forget exactly how much it was but a 3 star restaurant for 2 was like 2k after spending an additional 400ish on dessert wine and some cocktails. Insanely great meal with 14 courses. Left feeling perfectly full. We spent nearly 4 hours there.
This year will be the third time we've gone.

I paid like 85 dollars for 1 plate of BBQ which I split with a friend in Washington DC. I don't remember the place. this was in like 2017. it was not even remotely worth it and I have never gone to a BBQ joint again. Scam food.

100€, it was one of those fancy restaurants with closed menu made of like 20 small courses, food was really good and was enough to satiate my hunger but if one of the courses is really really good its just a small portion and that sucks.
>>
>>22191377
It IS overpriced. But most of that expensive BBQ is brisket. Which is an insanely expensive cut and it's cooked and constantly tender to for ridiculous times, like 12+ hours.

Most places will slap a 100% markup on a tiny plop of ground beef they cooked for you in five minutes these days for smash burgers. So it's really not that crazy that a cut of beef that cost $10/lb to begin with in its raw state can end up costing $30/lb after 12 hours of labor.

it is literally not an expensive cut of meat it's a really bad and tough cut that is generally made into ground beef. it's one of the cheapest cuts of beef if not the cheapest.
>>

What? in Spain brisket is considered third rate cut and one of the cheapest, it has so little demand its usually used for ground beef, I rarely see it offered at the butcher shop.

The plating's a little busy but that looks very nice.

>>
Once a restaurant becomes a certain level of expensive, it's no longer about the food, it's about showing off how much money you have.
It's for the Upper-Middle Class Lawyer/Corporate/Tech type to show potential clients and sexual partners how they are the type of person who has a lot of money.
And if the US Open proves anything to me every year it's that those people are ultimately without real taste. A Patek Philippe watch tells time just as good as the Apple Watch you got for free with your phone upgrade.

it WAS the cheapest cut of beef until it went mainstream now it sells at ribeye prices. the last time it was in my local grocery it was $8.99lb. the butcher didn't even put it out as he said no one would buy it at that price.

I buy half a cow once a year and they literally just take the brisket and grind it into ground beef because it's the most dogshit portion of the cow. idk why you faggots are defending BBQ joints charging 35 dollars a pound for meat that costs 5 dollars a pound. you are mentally ill.

Californios definitely deserves their 3 stars.

It's weird to get upset at how other people choose to spend their money. Very common to see it on 4chan actually.

Idk but I paid like $8 for a very small can of juice from the supermarket that tasted awful.

>>
>>22191969
>It's weird to get upset at how other people choose to spend their money.

Yes I agree. I used to go out for a night and spend plenty, just on getting drunk. I was on a work trip, staying overnight, but even though I'm not HR, I got lumbered with them. Once I knew that was going to happen a couple of weeks before, I booked a 2 star place for that evening. It was a 7 course taster menu, but there were 4 or 5 extra 'courses', amuse bouche, pre-dessert or whatever, plus a couple of complimentary drinks. It was 210 standard, I had a few more drinks. Plus service charge it was 310. Admittedly my allowance took a chunk out of it, but I still paid quite a lot for myself. It was the best meal I ever had and I was stuffed.
>>

>>
>>22192081
>>22192107
200 dollars a day in quality hardwood for smoking does not excuse the price. brisket is literally a piece of meat you leave to sit for 12 hours while you sleep or play Pokémon Go. it's literally a scam.
>>
>>22192171
i wasnt talking about the price i was talking about your wrong opinion about the quality of brisket as a meat. no amount of mental rationalizing can ever substitute tasting a good smoked brisket for you. just stop.

>>22191295
$1500 at an Italian place between like 20 people for my dad's 70th birthday. Told everyone to order whatever they want and get whatever drinks they wanted.
>>
>>22192023
I ran a commercial smokehouse at a meat processing plant using a large offset, hopper fed system and the fuel costs were negligible because we just fed it sawdust from a nearby lumber mill. The sawdust worked better than I would have guessed, the only downside is that it builds up residue a lot faster so you have to clean the vents and drains more often.
>>
>>22191295
I've had a lot of Champagne and caviar, but never paid for it myself.
I always think "I could make that at home" when I eat out. It's not a great habit, really.
>>
>>22192199
How much did you charge for brisket?
>>
>>22192031
Well there you go. Sounds like you get it. The chefs making those tasting menus are experts in the dining experience, so the amount of food served should be just right to not leave hungry or to feel overly full after the meal.
One tuesday I was with my girl on our day off. We hit up a local restaurant for happy hour. After drinking for a couple hours they cut us off. We got nicely drunk. Walking down the street we see our fav sushi joint. Spontaneous tuesday omakase. We sit at bar and I just get the chef to serve us up whatevers best with whatever sake pairs nicely. Accidentally spent 400 bucks on the meal. It was a great time so it was just funny lol. I always try to get some tips for my own sushi from the chef but he's kinda tight lipped about it.
>>
My gfs family took me out to a fancy steakhouse, I think the total bill was around $300 per person and it was pretty good
>>
>>22192175
Smoking and marinating meat for 12 hours is not something you do to high quality cuts, if you have to add so many flavors to make it taste good its because its not that good on its own alone.
High quality cuts are usually served just sealed with minimum seasoning, lesser cuts are cooked with stuff to make them palatable.
>>
>>22192273
>marinating

Anon do you think Texas is a desert? Like 85% of the state (where everyone lives) is wooded. Even in the desert areas there's still tons of mesquite. Mesquite and oak are the traditional Texas barbecue wood sources.
As for people paying out the ass for these, it's not a thing. Big bbq places source and season their own wood on the cheap. The one down the street from me literally just finds cutup oak in the trash, takes it home, splits it, and lets it season in a big ass pile outside the restaurant.
Brisket is, unironically, stupid expensive here.

Thing with rich people is they can buy anything they want, so they get to a point where the only thing they can buy to show off to other richfags is ""experiences"".

50 euros for braised beef and mash in a restaurant in Germany. It was alright, the beef was very tender but the sauce was too rich. It needed to be cut with some acidity or perhaps not reduced as much as it was. But definitely overpriced.

Doubt I've ever paid over $100 for my meal, though the bill for my meal when I was taken out by a vendor probably has exceeded that, especially at steak houses.
The most I've overpaid probably was the time I saw a contestant on some cooking show make four cheese macaroni with four expensive, artisanal cheeses. Only Whole Foods carried three of them, and while I don't remember the total cost, the resulting dish was not worth the price.
I'm sure I paid with a credit card but I always paid off the balance each month, so it might as well have been cash. At the time I worked in IT for a high end law firm that paid a good, though sub-FAANG salary. The money spent on the cheese was a minor annoyance but one of little financial impact.

I've had 750-1000€ meals (didn't pay for, business relations) and they were without exception a complete letdown.
The people who invited me agreed each time. In one occasion we went to a small restaurant around the corner afterwards and had better food there at 20€ per person.
This is with business professionals, by the way. Upscale wine traders, restaurateurs, suppliers. Not people in tech or DJs or whatever.

I think it's because the amount you're spending on one dinner is enough to genuinely change quite a few peoples lives. Other people see 2k and think "Wow I could really pay down my car loan. Wow I could finally do this house repair. I could go on an entire vacation for 2k" and you spent it on a meal. Makes you seem disconnected from common people when you spend 4k a year on 2 dinners. (If you're treating yourself a couple times a year.) In the end it is your money but it's hard to not look at it and think "Man if I had an extra 2k for a dinner I could easily repair my skylight go out to eat with a couple friends to celebrate and get them a bidet for their new apartment as a surprise gift."

I totally understand and I am not bragging about it or shoving it in people's faces. I was simply replying to the topic of thread. If you get angry about it and lash out like the other anon did then that misplaced anger/negativity is probably part of why you can't afford 2 grand on dinner once or twice a year. I don't get mad or feel anything about people who have more money than I do.
Even poor americans are wealthier than the majority of the world. If you really put your own life into a worldly perspective most people should actually be grateful that their own struggle is what it is and not the struggles of people in far worse situations.
It's really just stupid to get mad at people for having more than you.

>It's a cheap way to fill up space on your plate to make it look like they gave you more food.
nah, texas toast slices with texas bbq is texas culture.
>>
>>22193635
That's your problem. This is a food and cooking board. He's sharing his food experiences. I currently couldn't afford to do what he does. But I'm interested. And I'm not some sort of rancorous, bitter and envious cock who has the compulsion to seethe at someone enjoying something that they paid for. It's pretty pathetic. And it would be pretty shit if he stopped sharing because of the overly sensitive weaklings getting offended because they had to spend their money on a fucking skylight. You fucking pussy.
>>
>>22193635
This anon is right what we should do is agree on some sort of spending cap on meals out that we can display but also probably have a spending cap on what ingredients we can show i.e. how much was that steak? Over $20? No fuck off how dare you show that.
>here's my Arby's food - yes that's ok
>here's my independent swanky food - no fucking way

Look. Please. I'm sensitive and this is offending me. I could only afford $26 on a meal, can you please keep it to that level of cost? I have a partition wall to pay for.

You wouldn't get it. When I did farming it was impossible to get clean. The dirt line where my socks would cover my feet was always like night and day. The dirt really gets in there

You're disconnected from common people and it upsets me.

I spent a fucktonne of money going to an event at a 2 michelin star place before. It was like The Menu withoit the murder, and my seat was at the viewing table so I could watch the kitchen theatre at work as the night went on. Definately worth it but something I would only do once.
>>
>>22193305
You base the entire gimmick around it being from a medieval period and don't even try to give the illusion of authenticity.
>>
>>22193746
I was just inside for a bit and took that picture to share. Sorry I didn't scrub my nails clean for you. They were clean for my dinner. Promise. :)

I was weed whacking grass to move my chicken's pasture/electric fencing the other day and got completely covered in dirt. There are dirty days and dirtier days on the farm lol

I don't know, because I can't afford to build it yet. Stop rubbing it in. It's your fault.

>three slices of bread
>nothing for the bread to soak up
What on Earth for? Do they expect you to assemble a sandwich out of it?
>>
>>22193712
I'm not upset about it. As far as I see it as long as the money is getting spent instead of hoarded it's good for everyone and it lets chef's experiment/use ingredients that they wouldn't normal have the chance to. I definitely see how it's easy to get upset when people can spend life changing amounts of money on a couple dinners though lol. I personally wouldn't be able to enjoy myself I'd be thinking about how much it cost even knowing I had budgeted it for fun money I'd be thinking about the other fun stuff I could get and how much farther the money could go. Though I would say in the US wages average like 80k a year 2 grand is quite a lot I don't think it's their negativity making it so that they can't afford that.
>>22193726
Not really a me problem I wasn't upset about it. I only mentioned a skylight because I recently had to repair one in a bathroom because it was causing the ceiling to leak and I knew it was comparable in price.
>>22193739
Not what I was saying, this threads literally for talking about expensive meals and worth.
>>
>>22193720
But the bread on that plate doesn't look like texas toast. If it is it's a very very sad looking texas toast.
>>
£50 for steak and lobster. Ordered it without checking the price beforehand.
Went to the toilet when the bill came and gave my bank card to my girlfriend to pay it so I wouldn't see. She told me later how much it was
>>
>>22193838
Look, you're upset. I'm also upset because you could afford to fix your skylight, whereas I can't - my skylight is still fucked. You could be a bit more considerate. Don't disconnect yourself from the common people.

NTA but a friend of mine that used to do building construction had a client that wanted skylights in every room of his house.
My friend begged him not to do it, explained that they all leak eventually, client chose some really cheap ones too.
Sure enoug, 5 years later and half of them are leaking.
>>
>>22193858
Don't rub it in, I've got a hole smashed in the ceiling with a hammer. You're so insensitive.
>>
>>22193858
yea I hate this thing wouldn't have put it in myself but the place came with it and it leaks into a bathtub so it wasn't the biggest of deals but gotta repair the ceiling along with it and got it in my brain that it needed to happen before winter. I'm sure it will have to be repaired again like 5 years from now but by then I'll have enough saved up to completely get rid of it or will have moved.
>>
>>22193865
The place came with it??? You bought it? How fucking dare you lord it around like that. Who said that you could spend your own money on that? We didn't approve it. You've got some nerve

piece of advice: don't state the expense of your most expensive meal in a thread titled "Most you paid for a meal" just saying

Fair point. Roofs are a bourgeoisie concept because I dont have one. Next time Ill obscure my total cost with a math problem that takes 6th grade level algebra to solve. Surely that will keep the riffraff from having their tattered and disheveled jimmies rustled.

I personally smoke brisket. It is indeed $5/lb for shitty brisket cuts (you are gonna pay more for angus or wagyu). The pellets are $20/bag normal, and even if I used a whole bag (I don't), you are looking at $100 for a whole brisket trimmed cut and smoked. 14-15 lbs of meat, which usually cuts down to 13lbs, for 100 total. Add some buns for like $5 and you get 105 for at least 8 full 1lb sandwiches. We are at $13/sandwich with 5 lbs left for use in beans and whatnot, or as a meat plate with sides.

A single brisket sandwich at my local joint is $15. By itself. Just meat and bun.

Just doing the basics I beat the locals for 2 bucks, and I didn't even bother counting all the sandwiches I could theoretically make. And more importantly I use mesquite, not that cheap ass oak wood that has no flavor.

I do get it if you want ONE sandwich and that is it. Slapping down 2 extra bucks is worth it. But I know it's gonna be inferior when I do it. And no pickles? Really? I swear these fucks are cheapskates.

Yeah it was decent. A lot of sushi.

Company Credit Card
Work expense meal on a business trip.
We were allotted $120 per day. I saved the whole days total for that meal.

you made it sound like you already got it, but pay by instalments
also I have nothing to do with you being poor. I'm poor too, which is obvious, since I spent all the money I had on those mediocre salads

I'm normally one of the people who H8s when people spend absurd amounts of money on something frivolous but in this case if it's 14 courses over several hours and it's all the highest quality rating possible and is a whole fancy experience for only $1,000,.. honestly I can't even h8 that seems very worth it to me as a special occasion a few times a year if you can afford it.
