Inspired by another thread I decided to give this ancient southern recipe a try. Supposedly meatballs cooked in spicy ketchup and jelly is a good combination.

Is this supposed to be like Heinz 57 sauce? I think this is what people dip shrimp into but I've never done that. The recipe I looked up called for a cup or more of each ingredient but the finished product was very soupy. I would rather have something that thickens up and clings to the meatballs so I'm starting out with 3/4 of a cup of each.

that's chili sauce

Not a huge fan of grape jelly I've always been more of a blackberry guy. It peeves me that raspberries are so much more common in desserts than blackberries. Anyways figure it couldn't hurt to try something different and see if the flavors meld. It's supposed to take about 4 hours for them to cook so I'll report back from time to time with an update.

I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't at least try it because this feels like the sort of shit that sounds way weirder than it tastes in the end.

One hour in, they are very purple. I'm thinking maybe I should have done more chili sauce than jelly. Hope they aren't overwhelmingly sweet. Might add more chili sauce towards the end.

Two hours, they are thawed out and warmed through. Starting to thicken up but still saucy. Going to let them go at least one more hour.

3 hours in and there is some success but also some failure. The meatballs are tender but I should have taken the lid off after the 2 hour mark. A lot of the liquid from the meatballs leeched out into the sauce and didn't have anywhere to go. It made the sauce even more juicy instead of getting sticky like I wanted.
Tried one of the meatballs, the flavor was interesting. Like I suspected it was a bit too sweet, if I did this again I would probably use double the amount of whatever savory sauce I was going to use and half as much jelly.
The blackberry flavor was mild, it was more just an indistinct berry sweetness. The scent was more of what I picked up than actual flavor of blackberry.
I don't hate it but I might try it again with grape and different ratios in the future.
Took the lid off and I'm letting it go longer to see if I can thicken up the sauce some more.
Also thinking of cutting some in half and then seering them in a pan. Adding a bit of char might liven them up.

it's not really supposed to come out fruity, which is one of the reasons grape is traditionally used (the other being that it's cheaper).
these are basically for reunions with the white trash side of the family. you just shovel them in your mouth, they arent actually supposed to be "good". theyre best when you have a bunch of other dumb shit on your plate like frito pie and lil smokies and the meatball sauce bleeds all over everything else.

Yeah that makes sense, if I was buzzed they would probably be great. Still it was a fun experiment.

one of the older ladies in the office used to make these for every office party.. would grab a plate of them and a few of the Hawaii sweet rolls or costco croissants, a squirt of mustard and damn was soo good.. though blackberry, i dont know.. its should really be grape jelly. nigga

This is accurate.

If you are making a southern recipe and you don't want it to be overpoweringly sweet, using about a quarter of the sweetness. They are not a people with good taste.

Spicy squid and Thai basil stir-fry. One of my favorite dishes ever.
