...that don't require you to have cooked rice to serve with.

It's blackout season here and for the next four or five months. Probably 2/3s of evenings I'll be cooking dinner over a single propane burner so single pot recipes are the way to go.
Also, since there are blackouts every day, food can't be kept long in the fridge, maybe one serve of leftovers is ok the next day, two days is right out.

Google is kicking my arse because every single-pot recipe I find says to serve over steamed rice or pasta or whatever and I don't have a way to keep everything warm while the rice cooks or even to boil water so it cooks quickly.

And I'm using propane from a 4.8l tank so short cook times are better because otherwise I'll need to refill it a lot and it's always going to run out in the middle of cooking.

Any ideas?
I think I could make jamabalya work.

Chili. No rice needed. Sounds like you live in a total fucking shithole too, I recommend moving.

That sounds terrible. What grains, beans, or roots are affordable there and which do you enjoy most?

Soups
Only ground beef for fastest cooking
Stale bread for carbs/filler
Fine chop on harder veggies.

There's a million quick soups you can do.
>>
Wait, if you’re interested in jambalaya, then other rice dishes are in the table right?
They just have to be in the same pot?
>>
>>22243345
Chapati
Roti
Tortillas

These take like 1 minute each to cook

Avgolemono is tasty and it's simple enough to make, especially if you have a way of getting precooked chicken (if I'm rushed for time, I'll just get a rotisserie chicken and remove the meat from that while the rest is cooking -- takes less than 30 minutes).
Where do you live, OP? Ukraine?

It's fine, charming even, but the neighbours leave something to be desired.

>>22243356
>That sounds terrible.
It's suboptimal.
Water goes out now and then too but that's easier to deal with.

>What grains, beans, or roots are affordable there and which do you enjoy most?
I can get almost any European staple if I shop for it, I have loads of Bulgur because it's easy to cook and I figured I might throw it into soup or something. German staples are easy to get too.
Buckwheat is everywhere but I'm not a big fan.

>Wait, if you’re interested in jambalaya, then other rice dishes are in the table right?
>They just have to be in the same pot?
Yep, that's the basic requirement.
Though jambalaya might use a load of gas which wouldn't be ideal.

Not a bad idea, there's an Indian import store that will have some sort of instant chapati I think.

Yep.

Yeah, that's a good idea.
There's a Georgian chicken soup that is very similar, picrel
I haven't tried this technique before but it sounds easy enough to learn.

Nah, I came here to help out. Only last winter I lived on Vareniki and Pelmeni and it wasn't very healthy, I want to do this winter better.
>>
>>22243352
>Chili. No rice needed
I think chili really wants some sort of carb base.
Anyway, the real problem with chili is that when I make it, there's loads of it and I can't refrigerate it for more than about 24 hours because the fridge won't be cold enough for that long.
>>
>>22243386
so makes less of it at once lol are you fucking stupid
>>
you know you can cook the rice with the rest of the ingredients as long as there's liquid involved?

Rice Vermicelli cooks in like 2 minutes.
You just quickly stirfry fry some meat, eggs, vegetables. Add spices and sauces. Add rice vermicelli and some water. Cover and let steam for 2 minutes.
Whole meal is ready in 5 minutes of cooking, minimal gas required.
Thumbs up!

Many types of small and thin pasta (pastina) such as Orzo and Ditalini are designed to be cooked in the sauce for a one-pot meal.

Here's a classic Italian-American recipe for one-pot sausage and peppers with orzo

I sometimes throw soba into a wok with vegetables and golden curry cubes, that's one option.

Is it too overcast in the winter for solar panels to work well? If I only spoke English and have a hard time learning other languages would it be rough for me if I went there?

>Is it too overcast in the winter for solar panels to work well?
They're not going to be reliable.
Fortunately the blackouts aren't (usually) all day, they also don't cover the city.
It's rolling blackouts to ration electricity because production is damaged (a couple of missiles hit a thermal plant in the next suburb last night) and drops below consumption, especially in peak hours obviously.
Charging stations (big power banks with inverters) are the way to go though a little solar wouldn't hurt. Winter snows, shoulder seasons like now are drizzly. They're most useful in Summer and Russia focuses on other targets then because it's the main season for advancing.

>If I only spoke English and have a hard time learning other languages would it be rough for me if I went there?
No, that describes most volunteers and they get by on their phone just fine.
In volunteer orgs there are many English speaking Ukrainians, outside of that there are way fewer but they're around. Officials (like the police doing document checks) pretty reliably speak English.
And foreigners don't get drafted.

>uses a metal fork to stir in a non-stick pan
No wonder his pan is scratched to shit.

>burns pieces of garlic "to get some color on it"
I do not respect this chef.
The dish looks salvageable though with better techniques and care. Needs more than two vegetables as well, maybe spinach or small cut brocolli. Finely diced celery wouldn't go astray.

Ive added rice directly to soups/stews and pasta directly to sauces plenty of times. Rice in soup can be really good.
Nice pic.
>>
>>22243345
Just cook the side (rice, noodles, potatoes) before and add them the the actual dish so they can heat up again. Can't you keep them warm with some isolated box or so?
Most one pot dishes usually take a long time to cook. Many French (style) ragouts can be made within minutes but they often need good cuts or base sauces.
Even rustic soups that need no sides like pea, lentil or potato soup take quite some time. Not sure how well it works to cook something on bulk with a single gas burner so you just had to reheat smaller portions the next days. Also as a student i never put my bulk shit in the fridge and never had any issues eating it for 3 days.

>Ive added rice directly to soups/stews and pasta directly to sauces plenty of times. Rice in soup can be really good.
Yeah, I think that might be the way to go.
There's an "everything green" vegetable soup I make, maybe add rice or bulgur to that, I wonder if I could even put vareniki in there?.

>Nice pic.
Thanks.
As you can see, it's not a city-wide blackout, they shutdown districts in scheduled groups, so the other side of the street is lit while mine is dark.
The buildings on the right are just lit using charging stations or USB lights though.

>>22244158
>Not sure how well it works to cook something on bulk with a single gas burner so you just had to reheat smaller portions the next days
See above, the blackouts aren't 24/7 or city wide so cooking ahead is easy, the problem is refrigeration, every time I open the fridge to get something, I warm it up a bit. I haven't measured it but by the end of the blackout it's halfway to room temperature and the contents are coasting on their core temperature cooling the outsides.
Milk survives longer than it takes me to drink it but leftovers would get dicey after 24 hours or so.

Freezing stuff would work better admittedly but my freezer is already full of dumplings and stuff. I don't have loads of space in it.
