Redpill me on Michelin Stars
>>
Absolute meaningless nonsense made up to put wear on your tires.
>>
>>22265343
It was made by French people, for French people, to promote French style food.
>>
>>22265343
It's a standard to evaluate culinary excellence. People think they're fucking clever, usually in a smug way, if they're dismissive about it. As you can see from the first couple of responses in the thread. They're fucking pathetic.
>>
>>22265343
They once had a meaning, when it was a French focused thing, after it became more international (american) it became trash.
>>
Yelp reviews for snobs.
>>
Its important marketing for the restaurants that go for that sorta thing. They're not being the best restaurant they can, they're trying to game the michelin stars because that means more money.

So the guides standards become the restaurants goals, and they rate a lotta restaurants and people actually seek michelin star restaurants to go to so they have huge impact on the culinary world.
>>
>>22265386
if i don't give a shit about what a chef thinks about my car's tires, why should i give a shit about what a tire company thinks about a restaurant?
>>
>>22265343
I went to a Michelin star place and ordered the onion rings. They were gigantic but they were burnt to a crisp and tasted like rubber
>>
>>22265343
3/4 I've been to were excellent, memorable experiences that were well worth the price imo. I did a tasting menu at all 4.
The one that wasn't worth it was still really good, but I definitely left feeling a bit underwhelmed and like it just wasn't worth the money. It seemed more style over substance unfortunately.
Just read a lot of reviews on Yelp/google too and don't treat the guide as gospel, if I'd done that I'd probably have skipped the one place. Of course there are plenty of sheep who will eat there because of the star and say that it was the best thing ever because they can't think for themselves, likewise there are the pedantic contrarians who will find a fault in everything. Do your due diligence vetting the place for yourself before going.
It can't be denied that a certain standard has to be met to receive a star. Whether the restaurant is deserving is of course subjective, and if your preferences don't align with the standards then you're likely to be disappointed.
There's also bib gourmand for more affordable restaurants, I've been to a few and most were great.

Looks more like an asterisk
>>
>>22265845
The etymology of asterisk comes from a Greek word meaning little star. Well done you.
>>
>>22265853
neato!
>>
>>22265853
And "asteroid" comes from the fact that they looked like stars (no visible disc even with a telescope) but were clearly not stars.
>>
>>22265860
Stay on topic please.
>>
A lot of them for really cheap on Pattaya!
>>
>>22265929
Yeah, derailing this thread would be a disaster.

By the way, the word "disaster" is an astrology reference implying the stars were not favorable to you.
>>
It's a prestigious award that tells you it's a quality fine dining restaurant. it's not comparable to Yelp review you morons a 4.8 star harmburger grill isn't comparable to a Michelin recommendation

A shit ton of hawker stalls in Singapore get them for some reason. Not sure why.
>>
The one Michelin stars I've been to were absolutely the best dining experiences I've ever had.
>>
>>22266081
For Asia, they hand them out like free balloons. A star is pretty useless as an indication of quality there.
>>
>>22266081
>>22266184
probably outsourced ratings to a local and the slants took it as izzat to give every random literal who? a star to boost numbers(and bribes)
>>
For me its Michelin Orion's belt.
>>
>>22265601
do you think they send mechanics from the tire shop to review the restaurants or something?
>>
>>22265343
They overwank seafood too much, otherwise a good metric
>>
>>22265609
You gonna namedrop the restaurant you didn't like then, chief?
>>
>>22265343
Michelin (tire company) being french decided to invent a rating system and include good restaurants and hotels in one guide and tourist spots in other guide so when you were on a grand tour vacation in your brand new 1901 renault you knew which spots were worth coming to
If its a 1 star place its really good and worth a visit
2 stars means they are the upper echelon the 8 and 9/10s
3 stars means that its in the top 10 restaurants
Im certain that standards have been mangled by time, trends, bias etc but its a good indicator if you have no idea where to go but have money to spend

>>22266064

I had a chef as a customer who tried to get one for 10 years. When he quit he said it's more or less impossible to get one unless you are well connected or spend hundreds of thousands on fancy interior
>>
>>22266442
Musaafer in Houston was the one I didn't think was worth it. The food was all really good, but I paid $460 for a tasting menu (around a dozen courses IIRC) plus the wine pairing... at that kinda money I expect to be blown away, or at least have an experience that was more memorable that the one I got. And it turns out Indian food and wine don't pair particularly well, lol, who would've thought. Nothing about it was particularly interesting really; I'd rather have had 20 butter chicken takeout meals.
It was the most expensive and least impressive out of the starred restaurants I've tried, and the most recent too. Like I said the other three were awesome, so I did less research into it and kind of assumed it would be worth it based off of the previous michelin guide recommendations, which was a mistake.
The three that were great:
Idylio in Rome
Veritas in Naples
Nomura Sushi in Taipei (looks like they don't have a star anymore)
>>
>>22266033
single Michelin stars have been awarded to random hamburger tier restaurants though so I'd argue that a 4.8 star yelp review is equal to one. A Michelin star was once awarded to a restaurant because they made really good bean burritos.
>>
>>22266033
It is absolutely comparable to Yelp reviews. Some pompous faggot comes into your restaurant feeling like his opinion means something and slaps an arbitrary rating on your establishment based on vibes.
The only difference is said pompous faggot is even more up his own ass because he gets paid to be a pompous faggot.
>>
>>22265343
Meaningless if you live in the US. All Michelin restaurants get the same prepackaged slop from Sysco as Long John Silvers. It's almost completely marketing and the presentation allows them to charge you $100 a head for sysco slop. There are exceptions, but it's rare. Anything with Gordon Ramsey on it is going to 100% be slop

They sell car tires to French people. That's what they've always done. They want people to drive cars and wear their tires so they buy new ones. That's the whole idea behind the guide, it's always been that.

The first restaurant which got 3 stars outside of France was Villa Lorraine in Belgium. That was only in 1972. When that happened the French were all "hon hon, people actually eat outside of France?". The Belgian restaurant was actually better than the French at that point, and several of France's top chefs demanded Belgian chefs ought to join the Master Cooks of France Association ("MaƮtres Cuisiniers de France") but they were refused because they weren't French.

Michelin branched out into the UK, Spain and Italy, because tourism increased. People drove further away with their cars. Same story here: getting stars in these countries required you to be better than the French. Michelin's system is very simple: 1 star is knows how to cook, 2 stars is worth a detour, 3 stars is worth the travel. but they write for French people who travel by car. If they recommend a restaurant 1000km away "worth travelling to", it better be more than amazing, right?

The whole success of the Michelin guide has them completely baffled. They don't understand why people around the globe would take interest. They sell tires, not restaurant guides.

But tourism changed, the internet happened, people fly for their holidays now. To the US for instance. Great food in Louisiana, Vermont, Wisconsin, Oregon. But the tourists go to NY and LA. So that's where the stars are. People go to Singapore, Dubai, Tokyo, Bangkok. So that's where the stars are handed out. Even though you most likely eat far better on some abandoned island off the coast of Kyoto, in some no-name hamlet 50km outside of Beirut or whatever.

The rest of the world doesn't run on certified supply chains, seasoned producers, affineurs, wine specialists like the EU. So that's biting them in the ass now.

This was easily one of the easiest tldrs ever, but I did read "tires" at which point I knew it wasn't worth reading further.

I don't get the appeal of fine dining. Nice steakhouses and the like I understand, but the places that serve stupid shit like one shrimp atop a rock with a smear of sauce on the plate baffle me. Is it just a big circlejerk for rich snobs?

Rating system has already been explained for Michelin restaurants. Quantity is never an issue with fine dining either, whether Michelin or otherwise. Any competent restaurant is serving you enough plates that you are going to be full, and probably more full than a regular meal, by the end of it. As far as quality, the execution should be technically flawless or nearly so, and the ideas behind each plate should also be interesting and compelling, though that's by no means the case across all restaurants.

You can get a good meal at places with fine dining just the same as you can places with cheaper fare. And you can get a bad, overrated meal at them both as well. Whether or not the restaurant you go to is worth it or just an overrated circlejerk is dependent on the restaurant itself, not on what type of food they serve.
>>
>>22269916
Making a post like this you make it obvious you have never been to a place like this anon.
They serve "a shrimp on a rock with a smear of sauce" because you eat 8-12 dishes. Each individual dish is not meant to be a full meal. It's more like a whole bunch of super tasty appetizers with usually one or two larger main dishes and then cheese, nuts, fruit and/or dessert afterwards. Nobody goes to a Michelin star tasting menu and comes out still hungry.
>>
I don't have the money to delude myself into thinking spending 200 bucks for a meal is worth it, not saying they aren't good at their job.

Let's take chain restaurant food quality from massive corporation supply (literally same source, even 3 star MS restaurants got caught getting food from Whole Foods) and make it so insanely small and intentionally plated that you don't have enough time to taste the poor quality. And charge $300-$1000 for it.
That is all Michelin Star dining resturants. The single biggest scam in the history of food. If any place has a Michelin Star this is a huge warning sign to not book this reservation
>>
>>22265343
michelin plates and 1 star restaurants are always good value but are unlikely to be mindblowing
