Is homemade butter supposed to smell like cheese?
is the skin behind my ears supposed to smell like cheese?
>>22268886If you used cultured dairy to make it then it can smell a bit like cheese. I suppose it could smell like fresh mild cheese if it's not cultured. If it wasn't cultured and it smells like funky cheese then it's probably spoiling, likely because it still had too much moisture left in it.

>>22268923If you’re cool and store a slice of cheese there then yes
>>22268886Yeah why wouldn't it? It's basically the same thing.
>>22268886Fresh butter doesn't smell at all. If it smells it's off, or it's been stored badly.
>>22268923perhaps
>>22268886If it's cultured it might smell slightly nutty but not pungently so. If you're asking such a question then you're probably not culturing your own butter though. It's possible it wasn't washed well enough and the liquid content inside the butter turned it rancid quickly. When I homemake butter I portion it up into small portions each being an ounce or less and freeze what I'm not using individually. Butter freezes very well, I've thawed out a bit of cultured butter a year later and it was no worse for wear because it was stored properly.
