> what’s the point
Fun. The point is fun, that is all.
There are ways you can participate in the holiday without contributing to Big Candy or whatever decorations industry that other guy brought up.
You can give out toys, real fruit gummies, fruit pouches, fucking gogurt or locally made candies.
I never decorate, but my neighbor spent 3 months building a fnaf set. You can make ghosts from sheets or creepy shadows for your windows from cardboard.
It’s one of the few community holidays too.
People seem to think that there are rules you have to abide by to participate. You have a lot of freedom to enjoy the day how you want to though, you don’t HAVE to make sure every single kid gets candy even lol
Just turn your light off when you’re out and no one cares.

I got a great deal recently on frozen corndogs, fourteen for 50¢ total (not each) so I bought two boxes and joked about giving them out instead of candy.
We gave candy. Teal Pumpkin kids got bouncy balls, bubble wands, Jelly Bellies, spirograph sets with rainbow scratchpads, stickers and homemade crayon packs. Only neighbourhood kids got the good toys and candy. The ones that are literally bussed here from Allah-knows-where got the lesser value stuff.

Communities are bigger than one neighborhood, and the concept of apartment and rural kids getting a chance to enjoy the community at large is fine.
Obviously there is an issue with one or two neighborhoods being overwhelmed, and i wouldn’t even blame a neighborhood for posting people off there had been a flood of folks.

Not at all. I'm very generous with my neighbors, as they are with me. I spent a little over $400 on stuff to hand out to trick or treaters this year. Unfortunately, the world is full of people willing to take advantage of that generosity.

>the concept of apartment and rural kids getting a chance to enjoy
If you live in a rural area then you still have neighbors and there's nothing stopping you from talking to them and coordinating some sort of halloween event for your kids. Why can't everyone in your apartment complex do the same? You can't go door to door in the projects? You could, but you don't want to do that - you don't want to build a community, you don't want to put in any effort, and you certainly don't want to spend any money. What you want is to find a place where people have built and safe and prosperous community and insert yourself. You don't want to contribute anything, you just want to weasel your way into a community, like a parasite, like a leech, and take what these people intended to share amongst themselves, and leave never to return after you've stolen your fill.

>>22270684
>>22270709
In any reasonably sized city, the unfortunate reality is that the nice neighborhoods are a short car ride away from the bad ones. The bad ones aren't bad because they're poor, they're bad because the people there are selfish short sighted pieces of shit. And what those pieces of shit like to do on Halloween is pile into their cars and drive to the "good neighborhoods" to do what I described above.

There's no real way to prevent this aside from the stuff I described in my previous post. This sort of thing is a large part of why trick or treating has died out in most of the country. I'm sure you've all seen those ring camera videos of niggers walking up onto a porch and taking everything that isn't nailed down. Have that happen to you a couple years in a row and you'll find your holiday spirit disappears very swiftly.

>In any reasonably sized city, the unfortunate reality is that the nice neighborhoods are a short car ride away from the bad ones.

It makes me realize how lucky I am to live in this small town. We even have a little Halloween parade that the local high school band participates in and nearly every local business hands out free candy to kids downtown.
>>
>>22270737
> my neighbors
Conveniently ignoring my point that community goes beyond your neighborhood.
> If you live in a rural area then you still have neighbors and there's nothing stopping you from talking to them and coordinating some sort of halloween event for your kids.
There is no neighborhood. There are houses acres apart, and a handful of children. I’d be happy to have kids in that situation experience what suburban kids get to.

> Why can't everyone in your apartment complex do the same?
I live in a very active neighborhood, i actually made the Halloween general post if you want to see.
Apartments aren’t the same as neighborhoods, it’s a glorified trunk n treat. I’m sure the apartment complex near me came to my neighborhood, it’s mostly Mexicans and there were more Mexican families on my street than i believe live in the neighborhood. It was great, most of them had impressive costumes

> You can't go door to door in the projects?
Aren’t those apartments..? Either way, happy to have kids from rough areas of they aren’t causing trouble. Happy to see the police roll through the neighborhood to ensure no one is causing trouble
It’s really that simple.
The kids meant to get out of the ghetto will when they see what’s out there.

> Have that happen to you a couple years in a row and you'll find your holiday spirit disappears very swiftly.
Stopping bad behavior is fine, you don’t have to become a myopic faggot about it.
>>
>>22270737
Jesus. Is this how I (>>22270017/>>22269892) come across? Like I said, I don't begrudge the chirruns from elsewhere any treats. I get and it's not their fault that they live in the situation they do. I just save the higher value stuff for the locals.
Usually? We do a private trick-or-treating event days ahead of Halloween without outside kids interloping so it's easy to know if you're not from around here because if you're here on Halloween proper, you're definitely not.
I'm sure I mentioned as much last year.
But this year, Halloween was on a Saturday. No Friday rushing home from work to get the kids dressed and out the door. No Monday school to get kids in bed by. So we just had our kids trick-or-treat with the bus-kids. That's the only reason my wife and I had a tier-system.
>>22270577
>>22270595
What >22270618 said is almost entirely correct lmao
I live in an early 19th century house in an 18th century area of a 17th century city so yeah, East Coast, high income area. We're surrounded by numerous cemeteries, many containing the resting places of numerous signers and other founding fathers, and just as many ghost stories so I get the Halloween tourism here.
My own tiny courtyard is reputedly haunted by a ghost horse.
>>
>>22270628
Teal Pumpkin is more than just separating nuts from nut-free. Many kids can't even have a nut-free candy if it's ever come in contact with the packaging of one that isn't. Even Jelly Bellies are sometimes not safe for Teal Pumpkin kids. Thing is, the Project started in a red state. Children's safety is not a partisan issue but the reality is that he's right and I do live in an East Coast "liberal elite" area full of allergy kids.
>>22270750
>myopic
You might've meant misanthropic. He's definitely being a bit misanthropic but I guess you could say he's myopic, too, since he's narrowing his scope to just his own neighbourhood rather than his larger community. His distrust and dislike for other people is certainly misanthropic, as well.

>community goes beyond your neighborhood.
My community is something I built with my neighbors. What part of it did you build, "rural" family who drove 20 miles to come steal from me? Have you contributed anything to my community or do you just feel entitled to come and take from us?

>There is no neighborhood
I didn't say you have a neighborhood, I said you have neighbors. It doesn't matter how far apart you live. Call up your neighbors. Coordinate with your school. Put some effort into making the place you live better rather than trying to figure out ways to steal from strangers.

What's you're saying is that you want to have your cake and eat it too. You chose to live in a rural area, presumably because you like the positive things about it, and you think that you should be entitled to the positive parts of living in a city as well. You can insult me all you want, but the reality is that we don't know you and we don't want you here and people like you are the reason gated communities exist. We are not obligated to open our homes to strangers simply because you think your children deserve to be given things that you made no effort to provide for them.

If you want your children to have a good Halloween experience then you work with the people living around you to build it. My neighborhood's trick or treating gets more elaborate every year because my wife talks to our neighbors and works to build community organizations that can coordinate to give the children in our community a rich and happy childhood, We feel safe letting our children go out and have fun because we know who lives here. I don't mind spending hundreds of dollars buying treats because I know my neighbors will appreciate it and are doing the same.

You had no part in building this and you have no right to participate in it, which is why I consider it a bargain to to pay $1k a month to have, among other things, a 24/7 manned guard station keeping people like you out.
>>
>>22270776
Yeah, the churchyard just behind my house also has a bunch of Indian chiefs who signed treaties with the founders, I think… then later died almost immediately, presumably of diseases they got from being around Europeans. So I live right by a literal Indian burial ground, too.
So I guess this area is quadruple haunted. Supposedly, anyway. I haven't seen or heard a single thing. My wife swears she hears the horse clip-clopping by the water fountain in the courtyard. I tried listening for it but heard nothing as she says "HOW DO YOU NOT HEAR THAT?!"
>>
>>22270768
>>22270773
All I can assume is that your neighborhood isn't affluent enough to deal with the sort of problems I've seen in the past. The carloads of kids from the projects don't bother with middle class areas; they go straight to the wealthiest neighborhoods they can successfully infiltrate. I'm glad you've been sheltered enough that you can maintain that sort of generosity even for people who have never spoken to you before and never will again, and are in front of your house only to take from you.

You realize that's what trick or treating should be, right? I'm giving candy to my neighbor's kids, they're giving candy to my kids, and we as a community have the same incentives to make it a better experience for everyone. Someone who drives from the other side of the city to our neighborhood isn't coming to contribute anything; they're just coming to take.

And there's a hard limit on how much of that we can sustain. The nicer we make things for our kids, the more word will spread among the leeches that our neighborhood is the place to come if you want good stuff. In other places I've lived, we caught people sending their kids to the same houses over and over once they found a place with nice stuff. They had a bunch of cheap junk costumes in their car and they'd send their kids up, switch out the costumes, and send them back again.

You wouldn't believe the sort of utterly shameless shit these people will do if you let them.
>>
>>22270795
Friend, the Bouvier Mansion is literally around the corner from me. Y'know… Jackie Bouvier? Later Jackie Kennedy? Even later Jackie Onassis? Yeah. Those Bouviers.
This is not middle class. It's just that being in a city, there are no ways to keep others out and nor should there be.
And I'm well aware of the shamelessness of some people. I'm speaking with one displaying as much right now.
>>
>>22270795
I'm this anon >>22270744 and I do understand what you're saying. My town is small enough that pretty much everyone either knows each other or we know a guy that knows a guy so we have no problem giving candy to every kid in town. We're all one giant community even if there are a few bad apples that live here. We don't believe kids from those bad families should miss out on Halloween. They won't steal because our police are very active. I think if hundreds of kids from two towns away bussed in and started expecting everyone to give them candy we'd probably become a bit annoyed. Our high school football teams are probably rivals after all.
