>>4024583>4.0 has some frustrating qualities, but don't think I can completely dismiss it. Love/hate feelings.I guess it’s good that you got something out of it but I have already accepted that I will always hate what the rebuilds did to Eva. It’s been 5 years and my opinion hasn’t moved an inch. It goes was beyond Kaworu as well, almost every character got butchered in some major way for the sake of the meta. I honestly don’t know what I was expecting looking back because I don’t think it’s possible to create a better ending for this franchise than EoE. I think the thing that bothered me the most about 3.0+1.0 was the insistence on trying to make a “happy” ending both in theme and content and it just completely falls flat. EoE is inspirational because it represents hope in the depths of despair. 3.0+1.0 completely fails as a parallel to EoE in my opinion because Shinji’s arc is over in the first half of the movie and the second half is Anno creating arbitrary reasons why Shinji should needs to say goodbye to all of his friends. It’s crazy that a series that was originally about the hedgehog’s dilemma and how connecting with others is worth it in spite of the pain decided to make it so that Shinji just gives up on being a part of his friends lives because there’s some friction there. It wouldn’t be as bad if the new ending didn’t insist on showing them all living in a new world where everyone is human and normal, that removes like 80% of the problems Shinji was having with them already. I know it’s all meta narrative stuff about letting go of Eva but it’s so divorced from what these characters originally were.

>>4024593Yeah man I'm just here for the cute worus
>>4024591>Mari is the magic catalyst for it allWhen you think about it Mari in Rebuild is kind of just Kaworu from NGE if he was a girl and also not an angel. She shows up and fixes all of Shinji’s problems basically immediately with no downsides and that’s that.
'luv me 'waru'luv me 'inji
>>4024592Honestly, this is small minded.
>>4024598Kaworu doesn't fix all of Shinji's problems, and certainly not without downsides. He is a momentary respite allowing Shinji to experience the unconditional love that he had never known. This is an important step in him accepting that he is worthy of love, but it doesn't automatically fix him. Especially since it is coupled with the trauma of having Kaworu and his love ripped away from him. By his own hand, no less.
>>4024609It’s not. These movies are complete ass.
>>4024614Sure. Yea. if you view them as something that's supposed to validate your desire for escapism, and mistaken beliefs that this cartoon show about growing up and facing life is supposed to be comfortable.
>>4024618Notice how Rebuild defenders never talk about the plot, the writing, the characters, the animation quality, etc. when defending these films. The only thing these films have going for them is the meta narrative, and that was already done far better by NGE and EoE.>Mistaken beliefs that this cartoon show about growing up and facing life is supposed to be comfortable.Rebuild literally exists because people were too uncomfortable with the ending of the show and EoE and wanted more. If EoE was less dark and ended in a more traditionally happy way I am almost certain the rebuilds would not have existed, at least in this form. That’s why rebuilds is called “Thrice Upon A Time” because audiences (and evidently Anno himself) were not comfortable with episode 26 or EoE being the only endings to the series. But Rebuild’s ending could not be less challenging. Anno literally puts these characters in a perfect, normal reality and tells people to go outside and live their lives. Which was fundamentally the same point as episode 26 and EoE, but it was done in a much more artistically interesting way back then. You will never convince me that salaryman Shinji holds a candle to the beach scene of Asuka and Shinji still trying to make a connection in the destroyed world.
>>4024622>I'm not sure what you expectedI didn't want them to just rehash the original. But I also didn't want whatever the rebuilds ended up becoming.>pulled away from Eva by his wife into the real worldComments like this have never made sense to me. Not when talking about Anno. There's the obvious thing that everyone brings up of working on the rebuilds for decades being the opposite of moving on. But on top of that is the attempt to contrast Eva with real life. For Anno, they were one in the same. That was his job. That was the thing that got him out of bed in the morning to go out and interact with people. That was the thing that made him friends. And it was how he was able to meet his wife. For Anno, Eva was the opposite of escapism. His job as an anime director was the heavy burden he was barely able to bear that he wanted to run away from, like Shinji being forced to pilot an Eva. Which just makes the argument that the rebuilds indulge in escapism rather than oppose it even stronger.
Guys what's your favorite Evangelion? I like the purple and green one.
>>4024624>Notice how Rebuild defenders never talk about the plot, the writing, the characters, the animation quality, etc. when defending these films.Oh ok you want to talk about that instead of complaining about how it's "NOT TRVE EVA"?I don't like Rebuild 1.0 because it's mostly a straight re-creation of the first 5 episodes. Seems like it was a testbed for new animation techniques. It does look good, but it's boring as it's mostly what I've seen before in the show. 2.0 is a genuinely good movie. It's Eva at its most "conventional Hollywood", its most "Shonen action movie", but it's genuinely fun and watchable. 3.0 is maybe one of the best things Anno and co. have done. It has some lines of dialogue and moments that seem like a very raw and honest expression of Anno's regrets about making Eva at all, and the whole movie has this sense like it doesn't want to be made and seen. I know people seem not to like 3.0, but this sense of "not wanting to be here" "not wanting to be doing this that pervades the movie" is very relatable to me and cathartic to watch. Just as a work of art it feels intimate and refreshing to see a reflection on that particular kind of pain. At this point too, you can't deny that these movies look good. Yes, it uses CGI and digital animation, and I know some people don't like that, but 3.0 especially is clean and abstract. A "pure cinema" movie oriented towards silence and non-verbal montage. It's an art movie and it's not for everybody, but it's maybe more Eva than most of the rest of Eva. 4.0 looks good, especially the first half, even if I hate it.
>>4024643>Oh ok you want to talk about that instead of complaining about how it's "NOT TRVE EVA"?That wasn’t me, but these are not separate concepts. The reason the original Eva delivers its message so well is because it’s fundamentally sound on so many levels (great writing, great characters, amazing animation and direction, etc). When these things became awful in rebuild, the spirit of the original show was lost because rebuild does not treat anything with the level of nuance and care the original had.>It does look good>2.0 is a genuinely good movie>you can't deny that these movies look good>4.0 looks goodNotice how the highest praise you can offer these movies is that they look “good”. NGE and EoE had some of the most gorgeous cel animation ever put to paper. Compare Asuka vs the MPEs from EoE to the CGI monstrosity of a fight we got in 3.0+1.0. Compare the art direction of the final shot of Asuka and Shinji on the beach vs the final shot of 3.0+1.0. It’s not even in the same stratosphere.
>>4024630I like this one
>>4024649>Notice how the highest praise you can offer these movies is that they look “good”.Anon, /cm/ isn't the place for a frame by frame analysis of the visuals of these movies, or an argument about the merits of cel animation vs. digital, the use of CGII'm also usually one of the first in any conversation to be on the side of "Soul" in the "Soul vs. Soulless" debates, and I would agree that the rebuilds would come across as a completely soulless project if it were meant to replace NGE, instead of functioning as a sequel...But to completely deny that there is any beauty in the artistry of the rebuilds is just in bad taste. As much as I dislike 4.0, the first half especially has some achingly gorgeous visuals, and I'd find anyone suspect who cannot feel the intent behind it.
>>4024655>But to completely deny that there is any beauty in the artistry of the rebuilds is just in bad taste.I don’t care. The bad far outweighs the good in these movies and I’m done talking about them. I don’t know why you are so insistent on justifying Anno’s meta narrative when it’s connected to such a shitty product.
>>4024671>I don’t care. That much is clear.>I don’t know why you are so insistent on justifying Anno’s meta narrative when it’s connected to such a shitty product.Sometimes the intent of a work of art is more important than its superficial qualities. If I'm right to interpret the intent of the rebuilds to be Anno saying "I'm in a better place. I hope you can be too." then they were worth making. I do love the hand painted backgrounds and cel animation of the original series and EoE, but I'm not so beholden to them that I'm offended because the director of the series felt he had more to say.
>>4024672I think you just have bad taste.
>>4024673You too
