It wouldn’t surprise me if Arakawa heard about that since she was still writing the manga after the original series was done. It seems like after a certain point in the manga, Ed’s primary focus becomes Winry and not Alphonse.

And Edward was silently tortured every single day not knowing whether or not Alphonse was alive. One of his only solaces being in the presence of someone who looked eerily similar to him. FMA is ultimately a love story. Ed and Al were born to yaoi, but forced to shonen.
