As a kid, if someone saw you talk to your "imaginary friend" you would be bullied at best or sent to therapy against your will at worst, while as an adult people would just assume that you are high or went crazy due to stress and leave you alone (as long as your antics didn't affect others). Besides, having a ghost shota that only you can see suddenly appear when you are an adult would be much less scary than having a fat bastard appear in your room when you are a little kid.
