/hyw/ - How's Your Webcomic?Revived Edition
>>153787490
>>153787490Slow, because I'm lazy, I procrastinate, and I'm a perfectionist, what a fucking combo.
>>153788271Yeah you're HYW material.
>>153789030Thanks...
>>153787490Just about hit my quota I set this week for finished pages and am looking to exceed it. Building buffer... Going to reward myself by drawing green demon man butt later.I have to draw a lot of the 'Cuda for coming pages, which I've already roughed out. It'll be worth it though.........
>>153787917This is literally every superhero story
>>153787490Thumbnailed. Still, too busy to finish a bunch of pages in one go like I used to.I miss working on it tho.
>>153789830Hit my page quota of 4 finished pages this week, and started working on additional pages. Buffer scheduled up until the end of June. I am doubtful I can retain a buffer, but we'll see.
>>153793677look at you, you page machine
>>153793677I hope Sacha Baron Cohen sees your work and contacts you to buy the IP.
>>153793677Let's go Page Monster
>>153791279yeah kinda
>>153794083I hope he sees my work and contacts me to kiss me and have my hand in marriage....
>>153794788I really respect your work, but why do you have to be gay and offputting when you get genuine engagement? It makes me want to stop giving you any encouragement.
>>153794849just enjoy her work then. Why should she have to change her type of humor just to not offend the lil'babies in the audience?Genuinely, artists cannot just be artists anymore, they have to be PR experts.
>>153794381I recognize those brush ink strokes, glad to see you're working on a new project! High fantasy is quite a contrast to Pizza Time, Let's gooooo>>153792370when will we get more Bellboy (abused or unabused)?
>>153795032>they have to be PR experts. So does anyone who has relations with the public, stupid.
>>153795250>when will we get more Bellboy (abused or unabused)?Maybe this month I can get one or two pages out. Man, I'm getting old.
>>153795294uh-hu.
>>153795294>So does anyone who has relations with the public, stupidMost people have relations to the public without having to be an expert, anon- you're just a recluse with weird self- imposed rules
>>153794849>>153795294>MAKE QUIRKY ART FOR ME>ok here's my le quirky self hehehe>NO FUCK YOU TOO QUIRKY BE MORE NORMAL NOW
>>153795417>Wanting quirky art without the artist being so quirky that it's offputting>This is wrong for some reasonWhy did you take that so personally?
>>153795484>the artists personality matches the art>ughhh that's too MUCH for MEI'm sure there's a disney or a glitch thread around here you can go to. In here we do actual indie.
>>153795508>We don't want fans like YOU around here!Gee, I'm sure the artist appreciates you white-knighting away their reader base. You're a real hero.
>>153795369Just like Michael Richards lmao
>>153795566I assure you, nobody wants a lil baby on their readerbase.
>>153795417>>153795508I assure you, anon, indie artists are (or should be) mature enough to handle conversations with their readers which feature criticisms that aren't 100% positive and supportive.
>>153795592As a creator, a consistent reader is a reader. I don't care if they criticize me. It's my choice whether to accept the criticism or ignore it. I don't need to be coddled.
Distractions from working on comics and talking shop.Comic question: Which of your characters is the hardest to draw and why?
>>153795592>Weird gatekeeping behavior that's recently shifted multiple genres and IPs to a "This was never meant for you normies" mindset, causing the IP to crash and burnWhy does this happen? Do weirdos just identify too much with not being normal and drag their weird subculture shit into everything?
>>153795664I've got a character with a condition that resembles Extremely-Early-Onset Dementia. Her facial expressions can be so subtle that she almost looks blank most of the time. I'm not a good artist, but my work demands heavy reliance on emotional expressions. I might've fucked up. It's so hard, man.
>>153795484>>153795566>>153795612>>153795628By that same measure, an artist shouldn't have to instantly capitulate to people demanding they change thier personality to be more palatable, nor should they have to suffer such fools forever. At a certain point one has to stand up and say "No, this is me, deal with it." I'd rather have a small group of readers who want to engage with my genuine self than an army of folks needing me to be sanitized for thier liking.
>>153795678because tourists ruing everything, anon.>>153795628there's a difference between criticizing your work, and criticizing you as a person. But if you are desperate enough to keep readers that hate your guts, you do you.
>>153795732>>153795742You two (one?) Are catastrophizing. Seriously the criticism was not that deep. Relax.
>>153795588Strange nonsequitor response, anon
>>153795849He had a notorious PR disaster you may be too young to remember. You should look up the video, it's pretty great.
>>153795708you can always study actors' facial expressions. It's what works for me.
>>153795678>>153795824If you wade into the ocean and then start criticizing the people around for being wet, the problem is you, man. Media consumption is not a one way street despite all appearances.
>>153795824yeah, we are the weird ones for not taking your shit.
>>153795901>>153795924You two do realize that success, marketability, good PR, technical improvement, and personal improvement all come from taking criticism, right? You're not helping anyone by attempting to spare people's feelings. You're hurting. Stop your gatekeeping and stop derailing the fucking thread.
>>153795889Yeah this is good. But I like to watch cartoons and anime too
>>153795889It's just such a rare condition, there aren't a lot of good depictions of it. I'll take this advice, though, I'll stay on the lookout for expressions of the particular emotions I'm trying to show.
>>153796126you know which movie would work? that one about Margaret Thatcher. Merry Streep played the aging, dementia/alzheimers suffering lady.
>>153796020We're not saying all of that isn't vital for success. We're just saying that there are means to be successful *in spite* off all of that. Being comfortable with one's own self and having the ability to affirm that self to the world at large is a victory in and of itself. If that leads to you becoming a better, more prosperous version of yourself, great. Enjoy your Vivzie-tier fanbase, you earned it. But that isn't the goal, it's merely a result of being genuine to yourself and then showing the world what it looks like from where you're standing. And yes, that involves being able to navigate the people who engage with your work, but it's a give and take. Too much in one direction or the other leads to faggotry from both sides, and its the balance betwixt the two that a good artist has to find.
>>153796166She's an incredible actress, so I'm sure I'll be able to get good stuff, but here's my problem, right, the character I'm drawing has the same condition, but she's in her twenties. She doesn't have wrinkles, crows feet, or even the life experiences that'd lead to the same expressions and visualization of the condition. The best I've found was this documentary about a 14 year old girl with dementia, and that shit is so fucking heartbreaking I don't want to watch it again.
>>153796194Let's let that be the end of our exchange so the thread can get back on track. This is a balanced take and I'm good with leaving it there.
>>153795250>High fantasy is quite a contrast to Pizza Time, Let's goooooStill early days, but I'm taking my time putting together some short stories for this one. Maybe one of the through- lines from PT is "work sucks!">>153796166>you know which movie would work? that one about Margaret Thatcher.Watched the whole movie waiting for a Robert Downey Jr cameo. Never been more disappointed
A scribble for a very self-indulgent bumper page- I've had a hankering to paint traditionally though, so may just do digital drafts and then traditional inks and colors.>>153796524Hoping that you have a lot of fun developing it, it's sometimes really fun to do a full genre swing to something else. No doubt the fun and varied character designs will carry over, especially in a fantasy setting!
>>153796524you fool, he appears in the SEQUEL.
>>153794788More likely for him to see this quirk chungus instagram slop and kill himself, kek
>>153794849A heterosexual woman draws this
>>153797157I will switch from homophobia to misogyny, then. My fault.
>>153797232
>>153797263Keep going. You're on to something with your spirit animals
>>153797522Thank you, anon.
People like my stick figure comic more but whatever
>>153797232>>153797263Love the use of black/ negative space. It feels foreboding without looking empty
>>153797779Thank you. I love to play with negative spaces when it's needed.
Why is this thread only ever active when it's being derailed by stupid fighting?
Shock Value bump
>>153799131because
>>153799131Have you considered that this isn’t a hugbox and that people are allowed to make fun of retards?
>>153796592my boyfriend wants to know if Jaqes can do blood magic or if he is very brutal and strong.
>>153795508The artist is not the show, we don't look at their art to see them, we come to see their art. Many artists conflate themselves with their art though and start thinking they are more interesting and can hold your attention on their own which is why so many quit art to become video game streamfags and reactionfags.
>>153800766Why do people who are content with thier own sense of self make you so uncomfortable, anon?
>>153800766I really don't see how this contradicts what I'm saying...Art can and should be enjoyed independently from the artist. Which is why an Artist shouldn't have to sanitize themselves to please the viewers sensitivities.
>>153800905You're downplaying how much a person can get in their own way. If an artist's personality is too invasive it will end up becoming too much of a focus to the point it overshadows their art.
>>153800766Exactly. Nobody reads a webcomic for the ramblings of a BPD-addled femcel. Being neurotic and fishing for compliments in every thread no matter how many people notice you does not make your shit any more indie. People want good stories but they also want to read one without feeling like the author will have a melty if they didn’t get enough asspats that day.
I love to design RTS-style unit types.
>>153801041anon at this point I don't even know what the fuck, or WHO the fuck are you even talking about.
>>153800905You can express yourself artistically without being a spastic about it. Nobody reads Robert Crumb comics for his ranting about Muh Society, they read the comics for the damn ass tiddies.
>>153801092Newfag, it’s obvious
>>153801106Anon, do you think you are FORCED to interact with the artists to enjoy their art?
>>153801106>Nobody reads Robert Crumb comics for his ranting about Muh SocietyFuck you, you dont speak for me
>>153801041>People want good stories but they also want to read one without feeling like the author will have a melty if they didn’t get enough asspats that day.Who tf reads ANYTHING through that lens?
>>153801152People can have opinions. Cry about it.
>>153801179it's more like YOU want to have your opinion without us calling it out for being an idiot opinion.
>>153801202Just stop giving him (you)s and he'll get bored and move onto another thread
>>153801041>are the femcels in the thread with us right now?
>>153801202>”n-no! You!” Not an argument, see me after class
>>153801231you're right.anyway. so... Who's character has the biggest ass?
>>153801152>wow this is cool, I wonder what the artist is like>FUCK DRUMPF EAT THE RICH MY AXE WOUND IS OOZING NOW I'M GOING TO SPEND TWO DAYS IN PETTY ARGUMENTS WITH SOMEONE WHO SAID MY DRAWING'S PERSPECTIVE IS OFFAt least in Japan all they do is get caught for child porn, western artists are truly insane.
>>153801202Anon...you don't HAVE to engage with that anon. You can appreciate his art without getting into pointless arguments with him. :^]
>>153801587Again, who's holding the gun to your head forcing you endure all of that?
>>153801642okay. I want to see their art.>>153801587then don't go into their twitter.
I see we learned nothing from the Betz era
>>153801805I learned that the thread dies if you don't engage with the retards.
What do you think of this?
>>153801680>>153801705>hmm this diner has a nice vibe, I wonder what its history is>'Babyraper Niggerface was a trusted member of the Retardsville community until it came out that he was involved in multiple counts of breaking into the zoo and pissing on the tigers and eating their poop'It's not like it's world-ending, it's just enough to make you wish you didn't know those things about those people and you might end up thinking about it while viewing their art whether you want to or not, for some it's enought to make them no longer wish to support those creators.
>>153801932>that greentextwhat
>>153801916it looks interesting, I want more.
>>153802040There aren't many pages but each one uses a different pallet
>>153802021>that greentextyou know pretending to be confused and trying to make people explain themselves doesn’t work outside your mother’s basement? You know you have to shit inside the toilet and not outside it?
>>153787490Made this 1 billion years ago enjoy
>>153802021It's about learning something you wish you hadn't when looking into something you like
>>153802140no anon, seriously. First you mention imaginary people who allegedly want atention, then you continue to come up with random stories. All of this started with a clearly nasty comment with clearly nasty intentions that you insist on selling as legitimate criticism to make people grow. And at this point I'm only engaging because the thread gets bumped.Either read what you like or don't. But artist don't have to change their entire personalities for you.>>153802196narrated like ass. At least we now know anon is not a writefag lol.
>>153802112well, I think it has potential.I would recomend not going overboard with the pallet differences, but I don't know your vision yet so don't pay much attention.
>>153802251>”But artist don't have to change their entire personalities for you.”Why yes they do actually
>>153802251No one is asking artists to change their personalities just that they be less vocal about their shit takes. You're too new but that's like half of what comicsgate was about, artists on social media attacking fans and getting too political while writing absolutely trash stories.
>>153802316I lost interest in making them, unfortunately. I was between jobs when I was interested, and that was a few years ago already.
>>153802393still, a very cute piece of media.
>>153802368>why can't artist just be expending machines without opinionsAnon, really, a bunch of goyslop for you to choose from outside this thread...
>>153802422Thanks. I had some ideas about revealing things about the MC but I think I only got to page 7 or so. the cfw.me link is mao
>>153802251>At least we now know anon is not a writefag lol.Are you the anon from yesterday's thread who was tripping put about writefags until the thread died?
>>153802466>having opinions means you are contractually obligated to post them unsolicited to your audienceI didn't realize, guess I need to write>FUCK NIGGERS GAS THE KIKESon bluesky and anyone who takes issue with it and stops following my account is actually in the wrong.

>>153802611>>153802634>>153802675mhhh I'll give it a try then, Anon!
>>153802675One last lil piece of art i made recently for my comic, months after finish it. I wish you all the best of luck with your projects! Censored a bit cuz theres just straight nip in the full version
>>153803067This reminds me of the crazy trapper keeper art from like 2001 to 2010 with like the dolphins and rainbows and shit.
>>153803132Lisa Frank art style. I see the resemblance, but it's real different from that.
>>153803132I do love 1 billion colors in my eyes, so i appreciate the words
>>153803132>>153803200I think some Lisa Frank mixed with 90's Felix the Cat
what the fuck
>>153803220>>153803234I think where this differs is that Lisa Frank has a lot of color gradients and transitions from one color to the next closest color. This is more a fuckton of colors everywhere. Both would probably be fantastic to look at on psychedelics.
>>153801932Are you aware of the concept of Death of the Author, anon?
https://thewildhaunt.thecomicseries.com/comics/184/
>>153803736If an artist is a shithead their work has to be phenomenal for me to ignore their wrongdoings and just enjoy their shit. Like the Calvin and Hobbes guy, he's an asshole but his comics are great.
>>153802368>comicsgatethe lord of comicsgate Ethan Van Sciver wears adult diapers. Comicsgate has completely collapsed in to a lolcow death spiral of bald fat 50 year old men. Sad!
>>153804233I literally could care less for like 99% of artists, even when I differ from them politically like to an insane amount, even if they did horrendous things too. A lot of crazies do great art, much like how the best sex is with the psycho chick. This bullshit of never separating the artist is just moral-fagging.
>>153804646Who tf cares. At least he's not promoting minors to chop their dicks off, or chemically castrating them. Also, where's all that pro-sexual positivity shit? It goes right out the window when a lefty calls anyone gay as an insult and then claims to be on the right side of history. And Comicsgate proved at least one point, that DEI in the comic industry was gutting said industry, much like animation too. Purity purges and purity spirals, since you can only be a creative and only have one type of thought and belief, and anything outside of that is a cultural sin.
I think that the cursed Seinfeld memes have ingenious paneling
>>153804785Maybe a little more panel separation so action becomes clearer, but yes.
>>153804646Is that true? Fucking kek. I appreciated him when he was doing actual pro tips about comics and art but when it became obvious he was only in it to grift that's when I had to dip out.
>>153804752Damn, that's crazy anon. Hey, unrelated, but...you wouldn't happen to have skipped taking your meds today, would you champ?
>>153805381
>>153801916I like this
>>153804752Ethan Van Sciver is 5 years late on Reign bow the Brute and has 10+ crowfunds he is late on and nowhere close to delivering. He spent 2 years making 6 hour+ seethe streams about Eric July and Yellowflash because he's jealous of them. He is not a man you should strive to emulate.
>>153804752And if you've read Cyberfrog, you'd know the writing and story is shit-tier trash, beneath the level of most of the comics in this general, including Coffee Cat.
>>153804752>Purity purges and purity spirals, since you can only be a creative and only have one type of thought and belief, and anything outside of that is a cultural sin.Ethan Van Sciver is an Obama voter who told Gail Simone he was starting comicsgate to grift off dumb conservatives. He supported Reketia Law after he was revealed to be a cokehead swinger whose young children were found positive for cocaine during a CPS visit. Yes. Really.
>>153800528Jacques is the devil, so he can do all that and then more if he wants to. He's always been a shapeshifting body horror bastard, but with a lot of bugs. He's been really reserved in DH so far, but much later in chapter 6 there's going to be a quick fight with a bit of gore (and a lot of bugs). If he did any blood-specific stuff, it would be a direct reference to Jedah from Darkstalkers, whom I love.
>[*UNSOLICITED OPINIONS ON COMICSGATE AND OBAMA VOTERS?!*]Sweet Christ...
>>153808961These threads are dead enough as it is, we don't need posters randomly taking 3 day breaks.

>>153809266No
>>153809378Do tou mean to say something like, "Don't be a perfectionist?" Because that is really good advice. Define what "Good enough" looks like, that should be something you can do consistently and relatively quickly, work on your art until it's good enough, then release it, then slowly push the limits of what "Good enough" looks like as you go and you'll get better.
>>153809423Based.
>>153809219>it makes $50K a monthoh fuck off i hate GenX so fucking much, this is 100% nonsenseI've barely started drawing, so i want to make my fan comics now and work on my own stuff afterwards.

Should I make a kung fu or military sci-fi comic next?
>>153810012Military, kung fu is gay and weak, it's also fake and gay. MMA shat all over it in the 2000's
>>153810012Kung fu is way less trodden ground right now, so that's my vote.
>>153810012Kung fu is too vague, I'd classify Ninjago as kung fu. Do military but make it about Carthaginian mercenaries.
>>153810012Depends on how solid the world building is. Is it normal Kung fu fighting or is there anime magic fireballs? How advanced of a society is the military sci-fi world, technologically speaking? Do these provide limits to your action scenes you can utilize or do they hinder you from what your aiming for? That's usually my follow up thinking when an idea pops in my head, anyway
>>153810188These stories actually have minimal world-building, they're just one-shots with the narrative planned out from beginning to end and I'm deciding which one to start firstI enjoy worldbuilding and I am planning to start a long-running series eventually, but it's nice to jump into a setting that I painted with broad strokes for a quick trip with no baggage to bother me
>>153787490If I wanna upload a webcomic to webtoons but also typical webcomic/image-hosting sites, how do I handle the vastly different image dimension formatting? Is there an easy to rearrange the panels/pages or export things differently to match the sites?

Beat. Got pages 12-20 fully finished and queued for upload.I wish all fellow comic creators a good weekend and lots of energy to get your work done!
>>153811752Just because you make a shitty comic doesn't mean it will be popular
>>153815477Frogposters and deliberately missing the point, name a better duo
>>153811752Oh so I can post StoneToss-like comics and except to gain more fans than a real original webcomic crafted with story and art.
>>153816574Yes
>>153787490How to het better at panneling?I created a script, but I cant transpose it to comic book format at all.
>>153813056It's nice to see how much you have progressed man!
>>153818336I always make my panels a part of the script from the beginning. you could always just cut it apart into panels. or find your own way to do it. <---here an example of my latest script
>>153818336Divide and conquer.First cut out what you want in a page to make it meaningful to the story.Of that, divide into beginning and end of page. Then divide again until you feel the individual panel has just about enough stuff going on.
>>153818336Just do rectangle panels everywhere, paneling is a meme and doesn't really matter
New chapter of Coolest kid in town's out (the end of the party arc), maybe go check it outhttps://tapas.io/episode/3886847https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/coolest-kid-in-town/glaire-hallow-part-2/viewer?title_no=981900&episode_no=23https://comicfury.com/read/ckit/comics/2835188

>>153828231Thanks anon :D
I'm in that PDF hoarding phase, it's very addictive and VERYunproductive, always waiting to find the ideal book, the perfect course... I need to stop procrastinating and get started for real.
>>153828636What are you FUCKING talking about?
>>153826676yeah. uhhh... yeah I suck
>>153829437it's true

>>153787490If I have a story set in the modern era how do I get into vehicle design? Shit’s easily my weakest point and I don’t know how people build references when there’s so many variants of them
>>153830656Uhh...learn from online pics And Draw modern vehicles.
so how do you guys start your webcomic? i'm an okay artist, but i lack writing skills. but i do have a vague story i often think about while i daydream. i guess i should also be asking how do i get better at writing?
>>153787490How does one sell comics without revealing personal info? Stuff like paypal makes you show your real name for example, I have no idea what alternatives there are.
>>153832375>how do i get better at writing? At a point, the same way you get better at art- you just have to do the work. Try reading some screenwriting books too
>>153832375If you don't feel like developing your writing skills, you can partner with a writer who has no art skills.
>>153832375If you don't have a vision for how your story starts then you need to come up with something. Maybe read a book or two. Don't bother with advice telling you to get a writer, I don't know why this general always tells people to outsource creativity.
>>153830656Best advice. Learn basic perspective drawing and shapes/ forms. Even if it is a modern comic set in the present you dont have to make the cars specific makes and models, it doesnt need to be a 2026 honda HRV. Instead think of terms like "truck, sedan, coop, ect"Give enough details to know what it is, but dont become a slave to them. >>153828573Shes cute. Keep it up, anon. Study hands and feet at multiple angles. >>153827406I like this, it shows a lot of potential imo. Try studying anatomy to better equip your demon girls. >>153793677I always like your vibe. Your comic really has a feeling of its own. >>153811752It is only meaningless to a point. Realistically, consistency is what wins in the long term. Even if it is consistently shit. A friend got onto me this week about actually committing to a project. He had a point, for how much i draw and write i dont have anything I post on a regular basis.
>>153833817>I like this, it shows potential imo.Thank you.

>>153787490The best I can do is share a bunch of ideas, this moon god character I had for about a few years based offAsura's Wrath, Ikaruga, and Radiant Silvergun. I suck at writingbut the best I can do is write down my ideas in a Pure Ref board. The basic gist is that he is a deity that fell to Earth after his sleep wasdisturbed, and finds out that the Earth was ravaged by nuclear warand is now fighting off alien forces from our solar system. How he fell to Earth is iffy, I have ideasof a women sacrificing her life to summon the deity after the aliens touch downor maybe the aliens land on the moon and inadvertently wake him up, I cant really come upwith why the Moon God would fight, other than he enjoyed his time on Earth and wants to protect it.
>>153834106That's nice and I'm sure it means something to you but it's just ideas in the void if you don't want to or end up putting them into something. I'd daydream about it more to come up with something more concrete for a narrative if this was something you wanted to make a story out of.
>>153834172I want to someday, the ideas only exist assketches, I never really wrote anything down, just sketched out characters while having this sameidea, spinning in my head with other ideas.
>>153834247Good luck I guess, maybe you'll come up with something someday.
>>153833777>I don't know why this general always tells people to outsource creativity.Because there's more than one way to skin a cat and some people are only interested in parts of the creative process and not the whole thing and that's fine.
>>153835063>don't get better at something, find an idea guy to tell you what to doI dunno, I feel like encouraging people to improve their own skills is healthier advice.
>>153835213>I'm not real good at ideas>You could find an idea guyArtfags ITT, everytime.>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>153835296It's mostly like one or two anons who have a chip on their shoulder that art takes longer to do well than writing. They're right on that, but they take it too far and think it means writers as a whole contribute nothing. It's not something you see in professional circles.
>>153787490>hyw>Topside Tales>https://topsidetales.the-comic.org/Comic's one off from 500 pages and I've been wondering if I should do a special illustration for the milestone. It feels pretty significant.>>153809452Making fancomics is fun anon. Personally I enjoy it though a lot of people really push for original stuff for monetization. I honestly don't care, I just make mine for the love of the game at this point. I got into keeping up and sticking with something which is a really important part I think for storytelling.

Do people storytime their webcomics here on /co/ or is it considered shilling?
