Creators tend to draw from personal experience. Like I said, it was my immediate thought when I watched the pilot and I always had that rattling around in the back of my mind for subsequent episodes. Other episodes didn't hammer on that theme, but I don't think they had to. People are probably just used to that because they've gotten used to shittier writing, but I think the rest of the episodes helped develop the characters so the ending where the themes were brought around would have more of an impact. I think Goose did a good job of leaving things open to interpretation. Nothing was particularly overt. The hints are there, but people could still argue to this day that the show has nothing to do with transgenderism and never did. I'd disagree, but I also think that means that the themes were embedded well. Nobody got up on a soapbox and beat the audience over the head with the connection. Also, how crazy is it that it's very likely TADC will be referenced for someone's masters thesis at some point.
