I was born in the 1990s faggot, same decade as Pan. They were still being produced for movies and shows when I was a kid and I even used them. Eat a bag of dicks.

Besides, it's best that we move back to physical media since subscription based services are gay and retarded. Which is why vinyl records had a sudden boom again.

I had an idea like this for my indiesl- I mean cartoon when I thought about selling physical VHS copies of it since the cartoon's time period is set in the '90s & dawn of the 2000s when VHS was still king. But it would defeat the purpose of selling home media of a cartoon you could just watch for free online. Collection item? Sure I guess.

Its actually a good idea in my opinion and a good counter culture action against the walled off internet.

Anime OVAs were a thing companies sold that allowed them to make movies they couldnt show at theatres or on TV. It was a way to bypass network censorship.
This is a way to bypass youtubes algorithm, or any algorith for that matter, that would kill your project because it was too problematic.

Id prefer DVDs though. There is more programming you could do with it by making custom DVD menu screens.

>>153824289
People didn't just stop watching VHS tapes because DVD came out.
Not everyone wanted to buy DVD versions of their VHS tapes and most of the time they couldn't because the DVD versions did not exist yet.
It wasn't until after VHS to DVD converters became a thing that VHS tapes started to lose value since people could not longer validate owning both the DVD and VHS version of the same movies and TV shows with limited housing space.

Right, but then why not collect dvds or bluray or download films? Some of the brand new films can be expensive, but old stuff (the same ones that would be on VHS) are dirt cheap and can actually be hooked up to modern TVs or played on computers. I’ve heard people wax poetic about the quality of VHS specifically, and some people will even go to eBay to buy homemade videos from tv broadcasts because they’re more interested in the commercials and general nostalgia.
Similarly, vhs filters on both video and audio are super popular even when it doesn’t make sense. Video about nostalgia or the 80s? Sure. But I’ve seen some 20 year old kid who posts vids of himself playing bossa nova/jazz tracks on the guitar who slaps vhs filters on all his vids. Similarly, there are music labels that only release music on tape cassette.
You definitely have a point regarding streaming and I’m glad people are starting to collect physical media, but the VHS thing specifically is different.
>>
>>153844033
Yeah, the “expensive” complaint is absolutely retarded. You can find them in great condition for dirt cheap even online, but nearly every thrift store will have several they’re basically giving away.

>>153822821
FDSignifier might have some reasonable takes when it comes to race but his overanalyzation of everything and tying it back to race or whatever topic it is in politics, is not fun to watch more than 1 vid of. And that's his whole focus/channel.
>>153830525
He's like 00's inspired but not towards any particular style except maybe thick outlines like CN shows like PPG except he combines it with Gorrillaz and graffiti art. It's ok. But Planetronika is more appealing to amateur artists who also want to make their fan art/porn because it is already sexualized in a way that is not subtle but also not trying too hard like some of Pan's designs. Also a simpler premise where it's just gags and not cringe dialogue also helps.
>>
>>153850709
I collect digital, DVD, BD, and VHS. I try not to have the same thing on multiple formats, and I get specific versions for specific reasons. Anything that was originally 4:3 in cinemas or DTV I usually get on DVD or VHS. Anything in widescreen I try to get on BD. Interlaced content specifically looks better with interlacing intact on my '04 Tau. 36 glorious, glassy, inches of tube!

Kek. One time in high school I talked to a black friend of mine (somewhat of an autist/blacknerd) and we both knew Rebeltaxi. I showed up with some LokiIRL cards I got. I heard his voice at SDCC when we were at a Kojima panel that he didn't show up for. Had his back towards me but his yellow and black flannel and voice was a dead giveaway. Luckily since I was with my mom, he didn't say much except congratulating me on finding him and then offering the cards. I said thanks and that was it.
A bit later this emo chick I was fucking really into asked what I watched and I said some including Pan, and she said I was the type to watch it in a kind of derogatory way. I said it was also for his cool editing and aesthetic and I also cringed at some of his humor. She didn't really say much after. I talked to her for a while but it fell through. Thought it would go somewhere. Blogpost over.

>>153846787
To create what?
VHS, like tape cassette, actually does a fantastic job of preserving media quality to the point that people who try to process their video or sound using tape in an effort to get “lofi” are often disappointed with how pristine things remain.
The shitty VHS quality that people think is stereotypical of the media tends to be due to videos recorded at home using the extended play feature which cranked the tape slower so you could fit more on a single cassette, recording over things several times, and improper storage somewhere super hot and/or damp.
But if you watched a commercially sold VHS of The Titantic, the picture would look darn near brand new even if it wasn’t stored in some sort of media preservation vault.

I don’t think people selling new VHS videos are trying to copy the degraded VHS look (and if they were, there are digital ways to fake that). And the gen z hipsters who collect VHS aren’t exclusively interested in tape warble (though to a certain extent they seem to fetishize that as well). I think it’s partially counterculture.

> but the futurism of the early 00s was about adopting all the new technologies
Maybe commercially, but I still recorded cartoons from TV on VHS and despite owning a discman and the ability to burn cds for walking around music, I eventually started putting music on tape cassette because cds skipped while walking around, burned through batteries super quickly, and weren’t conducive to listening to entire albums. I went back to using cassettes and a Walkman because I didn’t get an iPod until like 2006.
Selling a y2k inspired show on VHS makes sense to me because as hard as companies were trying to sell DVDs, most cartoon nerds were still taping their favorite shows from tv. If you didn’t actually live it, it’s easy to think that the 00s were all about sleek digital gadgets and translucent plastic because that’s the romanticized revisionist version of the era, but if you actually lived it, you probably had fond memories of 00s cartoons on VHS.
There’s nothing wrong with revisionist aesthetics. Hell, I thought the retrowave 80s thing was fun too, but that’s not how it actually was.

didn't genndy make the cartoon about a dog trying to get laid and go to strip shows before he gets neutered?

Is the issue not the raunchyness, but rather that the raunchyness he advertised wasn't central to the plot?

Yeah, that humans and toons can reproduce isn't repulsive as a concept on its own but it muddied already unclear setting establishment and wasn't a point worth bringing up in that particular pitch meeting.

My parents still have VHS tapes from the 80s. What the fuck are you talking about?

>>153858811
> …and fucking cartoons was not central to the plot
You understand context, right? If Pan was pitching a cartoon about humans fucking cartoons, it would not be weird to talk about that. Pan pitched a cartoon that was essentially a Pokémon ripoff but then added “oh, you can fuck the characters, too”. Including that fact in a show that has nothing to do with sex is already weird, but choosing to mention that in a pitch meeting is fucking bizarre, and planning ahead to mention it so much that you make a specific slide for it in your presentation is unhinged.
It was wholly inappropriate to bring up, but the fact that some anons can’t seem to understand why means they are just as autistic as Pan is.

tapes were being manufactured until 2016, but even if we accepted your statement at face value, as I'd already pointed out, VHS tapes from the 80s are still perfectly fine especially if they were recorded in "Standard Play" or SP mode which any commercially available tape is. The warbly shitty quality that zoomers and alpha have come to associate with VHS is usually due to low quality tapes being taped over several times and in LP or EP mode ("Long Play" or "Extended Play" respectively) which allowed consumers to fit more on a tape at the cost of quality and longevity.

Factory sealed unused tapes can still be easily bought both at wholesale as well as individually. There are even services that will customize the tapes with printed logos etc, and put your media on the tape for you. And, as mentioned, tapes from like 45 years ago still play about as well as they did brand new.

Your statement that Pan's tapes "will last 5 maybe years" is fucking retarded. If Pan is using unused tape (and there's no reason to expect that he's not), the tapes will be fine for ages.

Monkey Wrench guy is actually making money and consistently getting okay views. He'll never compete with Glitch, but he's doing way better than Pan could ever dream of doing.

Dirt cheap USB-stick MP3 players were a thing at the same time CDs were the new big thing, while cassettes were also still around as a dwindling option. None of this makes VHS a y2k-related piece of technology.

>VHS had the benefit of being able to record off of TV, so that alone kept them around in a lot of houses even if they had adopted DVDs for movies and shows. It's not really about being poor
Apparently people still used them recently to record modern streaming shows like Stranger Things. That's the reason why they got rid of Netflix from the PS3.

>Dirt cheap USB-stick MP3 players were a thing at the same time CDs were the new big thing
No they weren't. CDs started taking over in the mid-late 80s which is when they were "the new big thing", though cutting edge. They were the format du-jour in the 90s and pretty much how all music was distributed, though you could buy albums on cassette as well. Mp3s only really started becoming more prevalent in the late 90s, but if you wanted to carry the music around you needed to burn a CD.

The iPod was released in 2001 and a handful of knockoffs were spawned afterwards like the iriver which, despite being the cheaper knockoff, was not "dirt cheap". Mp3 players used actual spinning disk hard drives for the longest time. Those USB stick type players started popping up closer to the late 00s moving into the '10s. Cassettes were available that entire time. Like I said, I used cassettes in college and there were a bunch of indie record labels that exclusively distributed music on cassette in the 00s.

Through a good chunk of the 00s, stores were still trying to push DVD as the new format with deals like if you bought a DVD player, you'd get 10-20 free DVDs to help jump start your collection. You'd also see hybrid players that had both a side for VHS tapes and a side for DVDs.
Ripping DVDs was possible in the early 00s (and often converted and burned to CD until DVD burners became more available), but recording digitally from TV typically meant using something like a TiVo and you weren't able to access the files to store on a computer or CD/DVD, so once the internal hard drive filled up, you were SoL.

As such, if someone like Pan wanted to be able to watch his favorite cartoon shows whenever he wanted in the 00s (when most shows were not available in full commercially), he would have been recording the shows from TV onto VHS just like I was. The VHS release of his pilot is tapping into that nostalgia.

zoomers seem to think that people stop using old tech once something new comes along, but they don't realize that
1) people tend to be slow to switch especially when their entire media collection from decades of collecting is in the older format
2) the tech was often prohibitively expensive when it was brand new
3) the old tech was more flexible

VHS was very much still used in the 00s. I had shelves full of cartoon recordings from Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.

He’s still around. There was a livestream not too long ago where Pan was helping him with his car or something, and the comments were super pissed that he left the stream for like 30 minutes to do this.

He threw on a Nostalgia Critic video to pass the time, but it ended up freezing after a minute or so. I remember this because when Pan finally got back and fixed the video, Critic said, “Wait, what was that?” and it was perfect timing.
