So pretty safe to say he was working on the pilot during that time. How long does it take to animate something? 20 months seems a long enough time to fully animate multiple episodes but I've got no experience with that stuff so I've really no clue.

I just realized how they managed to have such an expensive Japanese voice cast. It's because the English one didn't cost them shit. Arin and his friends (let's include Elsie in that, although she's moreso a Glitch vet) voice the entire main cast, the only VA they would need to pay a noticeable wage would be Erica Lindbeck. It has action but the well choreographed and well animated action falls flat because we don't have a good sense of how muchit actually matters so narratively it's like toys being smashed together. It's emotional but the sentimental segments are so rushed you don't have time to care what happens. It's comedic and while the jokes land it's sort of a tonal whiplash between jokes and serious moments. The show is just half baked in almost everything it does, the characters themselves and the animation are the biggest highlights and for now that's enough, the story doesn't do a good enough job of making you care unless you already decided you want to care in the hopes the show will eventually give you better reasons to. I think part of it is that it's all shake ups, so far we only have a sense of what normalcy and status quo are supposed to be both before and after Kit's world because we can infer it based on what's implied and said, but the shake ups don't hit as hard because we never spent enough time in what's normal for any of the characters to make it feel out of the ordinary.

I think the easiest thing to say about the show is that it is kinda heavily built around Kit, for good or ill. The supporting cast are all kinda flat and uninteresting, and the villains are neat but not all that present beyond gags yet. Of course that is subject to change, but the general plot structure of the pilot doesn't really gel with the narrative focus around Kit, imho.
