Does Disney secretly hate animation? I ask, because Disney were afraid to fund this film and only inserted Tim Burton's name at the last minute due to his /tv/ success. You'd think the lesson Disney would've learnt was that more off-beat, animated films were valuable, and not solely TNBC.

Nightmare Before Christmas is a Tim Burton film. It was his little passion project that he spent years wanting to make. Burton didn't direct it, but it is still his thing. The whole issue is that Disney owned the rights, but once Burton had made a bunch of really big films he could negotiate with Disney to have it made. Disney only really gave it the go ahead because they thought a Burton film would make money, and it kinda did. The fact that Burton could even make this film at all is proof that he had big dick power back then. Because this was made outside of Disney and they just did whatever they wanted. It's not the case of Disney hating animation, they just like money. Disney gambled on projects like Roger Rabbit, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Toy Story back in the day, and those turned out to be some of the most interesting animated films. The real take away is that inhouse Disney is extremely bureaucratic.

So they were really more hostile to outsiders? I believe it, since Disney bought Pixar outright.

The King is usually wary of dealing with peasants

They didn't even release it. They dumped it on Touchstone, where movies they don't care about went to die.
>>

>They dumped it on Touchstone
Exactly, which is why I said Disney initially had no faith in it. (Alongside Roger Rabbit.)
>>
>>153843259

Not because it was animation, though. It was too "un-Disney".
>>
>>153843276
That's ironic, because Selick and Burton were Disney boys to begin with.
>>
>>153843301
Irrelevant to them, TNBC was only greenlit because Burton just did Batman and Disney wanted to ride the hype.
>>
>>153843328
>Burton just did Batman
KEK, my thoughts exactly. Nearly every Burton project has been /tv/-related, despite people associating him with animation.
>>
No, it's that theme parks, live action kidcoms, live action sitcoms and reality show docos are more profitable
>>
Some zoomer revisionism in this thread. Roger rabbit and nightmare were not sent to touchstone to die. Thats just where disney sent movies they thought were to mature for the disney image just in case parents flipped out. This was before the internet parents were pretty stupid and a simple name change was enough to stay out of hot water.

Disney advertised both movies. Both had ads, food and product tie ins. Roger had a lot of money and labor put into it. Both movies were amazing technical acheivements. Its amazing we got either.

Like jesus christ, roger was like THE toon when MGM studios opened.

They nailed that final scene

You're allowed make weird movies if you're Tim Burton and have just created enormous fucking profits with Batman. Actual Disney employees aren't extended such privileges. There are no auteurs at Disney by design. Everything at Disney is well-oiled to the tune of safeness and money. Even if you're a really respected director or veteran animator at Disney and you've successful pitched something, you still aren't getting the final cut or full creative control. It's run by businessmen.

That explains why Bluth started his own studio, can't say I blame him.

Isnt there an entire emperors new groove soundtrack by Sting in a disney vault?

That whole movie is a story unto itself.

A documentary, at that.

It's pretty obvious they do.

The Nightmare Before Christmas, kept alive solely by

You forgot the ENTIRE Halloween season, anon
>>
>>153844130
And Christmas too, since that's what TNBC's plot centers around.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is aesthetically pretty edgy, you have to admit. I wouldn't expect anyone to feel confident advertising a scary Animated film. Even now, that still seems to be a hard sell

Do you consider TNBC a Halloween or a Christmas movie? Both?
>>
>>153846680
It's a Christmas-focused movie, since discovering Christmastown was Jack Skellington's turning point. Most of the film revolves around understanding what Christmas or who "Sandy Claws" is. Santa Claus himself gets kidnapped by Oogie, so it's very much a Christmas movie.
>>
>>153846680
It's a holiday movie for sure

It's actually Danny Elfman's film. He had to write the music, including the lyrics, with nothing but a vague understanding of the pre-production storyline, so he basically wrote that movie, its tone, its soul.
>>
>>153850239
He was also there for Batman, so that /tv/ connection does rub off a little.

Both.
