When the Moon Knight TV show came out there were all these annoying HR diversity types that slammed it for minimizing Marc Spector being Jewish. They said it wasn't enough that he wears a yamaka in a flashback and it was reducing his faith to an Easter egg.
I'm going to prove that the show portrayed the exact amount of Jewishness for the story they were telling. Marc grew up Jewish with a rabbi father, but he has not been a practicing Jew in many many years, 18 at the earliest. So if you're telling a Moon Knight story that has nothing to do with his childhood then bringing up his Jewishness is entirely unecessary.
First Marc beats his rabbi father and never sees him again for 18 years, not even when he heard he was on his deathbed and calling for him. That's as close to renouncing your faith gets without saying the words.

When he attends his father's memorial he forgets to put a yamaka when entering the Synagogue. A clear visual representation of his crumbling relationship with his father also crumbling his faith.

The real problem with the Moon Knight show was not adapting the 2014 asylum plotline as the whole show.

As a child he was ashamed of being seen with his father in a yamaka. Marc associates being Jewish with his father's pacifistic nature. Marc is not proud of his faith even when his father was forcing him to participate.

Even the run that plays up his Jewish heritage the most acknowledges Marc doesn't believe in "organized religion".

But the real killshot is Commandment number one: You shall put no other gods before me."
Marc worships KONSHU you DUMB FUCKS. Worshiping another god is ANTITHETICAL to being Jewish. It's immediately disqualifying! But these kinds of people don't care. Being Jewish isn't a culture, or a religion to them. Shoving diversity everywhere is just another checkbox on the "I'm a good person" list to them. They don't really believe anything they're saying. They just parrot whatever they hear with no intellectual curiosity, or even an appreciation of the thing they claim to love. Because they'd just have to read a fucking comic book with the character they like. Books where half the fucking things are pictures.

Imagine simultaneously larping that you're smart enough to read picture books and larping that you're Jewish. These people piss me off to no end.

I blame how secondaries were claiming that his Jewishness was a constant part of his character all because a few contemporary runs do kinda tackle the whole "Jewish guy works for an Egyptian god" IIRC (but you can crucify me, I genuinely don't know if that's true or not)

the character is Jewish but he's by no means a practicing Jewish man, he's not "Super Jew"

I'm Jewish and my only beef with the show was:

>that he fucking tossed his yamaka on the ground (too far)
>no real emotional focus on the irony of a Jewish guy working for an Egyptian god
>Feige went out of his way to cut out nearly everything iconic about the character out of fear of people making Batman comparisons

Moon Knight isn't Marvel Batman, he's Marvel's The Shadow in the same way that Night Raven is Marvel's The Spider

to be clear, I've only read a handful of Moonie...mainly Ellis, McKay, and Lemire...is there any comic run that DOES tackle the irony of a Jewish guy working for an Egyptian God?

I haven't read the super recent stuff but from what I recall not really. Marc being Jewish isn't a major focus of the character at all.
I heard that the writer heard Spector was a Jewish name so he smashed in a quick two parter about Marc's dad in the final two issues of the original run. The story by the way is about a religious fanatic that steals Kabbalah manuscripts and his dad's body to use fucking Jewish magic to resurrect him. We don't really hear anything about his Jewishness for decades.
There's a little bit more when Marc's brother comes back in Shadowlands so his childhood is relevant. And when they want to modernize his DID portrayal they also have to go back to his childhood, where is multiple personalities manifested after finding out a local rabbi was actually a nazi serial killer in hiding.
Other than that mostly just some pretty offhand references lately like Ben Grimm sending him a Hanukah card.
To the extent it's important it's mostly a way of quickly assigning a complex but upstanding moral philosophy to his dad so Marc can feel guilty about not living up to his father's standards.

The people you're complaining about never read the comics, they've read a Wikipedia article or a bio on some other site, that has Moon Knight categorized as "under Jewish characters" and the article probably making it sound like it has more weight and importance than it actually does, and assuming he was created to be a 'representation character', and getting annoyed when the actual character and the adaptation don't match the idea they got in their head of what he 'should be'.

Moon Knight's not even the only case of people like that getting mad about stuff like this, sadly.

That from the Bemis run isn't it?
Doesn't that run explains Marcs DID being caused by a Nazi he befriended as a child who wanted to turn Jews into Gold?

It gets brought up for one page in the Jed MacKay run, and it hasn't been brought up since.
The only reason Marc is a jew is that someone pointed out to Moench that the surname Spector is a very Polish Jewish surname, so it would be unlikely for a non-jew to be called that.

seems like a happy coincidence for his character themes then
