Just finished reading the TPB of this and wondering how everyone else felt about it? Massively superior to the main Batman ongoing. Pretty decent three arc stories over twelve issues. Not sure it stuck the landing but it was solid and interesting enough because of the noir detective stories. I think it is on par with some of those perennially recommended Batman books like The Long Halloween.
>>153865497Yep, really good, almost like all it takes is batman doing detective work
>>153865536Stripped down, detective stories, don't even need the big name villains either to make it work.
>>153865497It was good
>>153865497>Not sure it stuck the landingI didn't find Nicky Harris/Child of Fire to be that interesting. Not even sure why he kidnapped that Doctor either.
If it was shit more people would want to talk about it kek. A thread about Batman's new butler will get more responses.
>>153866044I don't know enough about Platonic ideals or Tulpa's to put his view of things into words. I guess the doctor helping batman with science was getting in the way of turning Batman into a part of Gotham's whole mythology.
>>153865497Gay-looking art
>>153865497I don't think it stuck 100% to landing but it was so far and above anything published in like the last 20 fucking years it felt like a masterpiece and proof we can still get good stories
>>153866960>I guessThat is the part that lost me a tad. I get this ideas on mythology but why the Doctor represented that sort of connection to the down to Earth, I don't know. It just lacked a certain something.
>>153866970Nice bait m8.
The ending to Pareidolia was the best part.
>>153867003>but it was so far and above anything published in like the last 20 fucking years it felt like a masterpiece and proof we can still get good storiesCrazy how much the context seems to matter here.
It is a collection of mid LOTDK stories. The only one that really stands out is Pareidolia as another anon said. However the fact alone that Patterns can be mentioned in the same sentence as Legends of The Dark Knight makes it automatically superior to the past 15 years of Batman comics
>>153868226What are your favourite LOTDK stories?
>>153868136When you get down to it basically every "great" comic story has a degree of context that made it great. We could say that all media has this effect, but with comics I think it is heightened. "Best of" comics routinely get called overrated because people are not party to or understanding of the context that lead to them standing out. And the people repeating how they are the "best" often don't talk about why.
>>153867068I'd have to reread it.
>>153867068I took another skim of those last issues to try and get a better grasp of it. He explains that before the doctor came along he was the one helping Batman with cases and believed that he was molding him into what he thought Gotham needed to survive. The doctor's method fundamentally clashed with his in a way that in his mind would affect the idea and/or reality of Batman's very nature and ultimately undermine his own efforts. He initially kidnapped him to just get rid of him, but because he was a nutjob he figured it would be more fitting to let fate decide.
>>153868305Just the classics like Venom, Prey and Heat. Gothic is my favorite by far. I recently re-read Shaman and found it to be much better than I remembered. Sorry if you were looking for hidden gem recommendations but it has been well over a decade since I sat down and read the series from start to finish. Anyway what I liked most about Patterns is that it captures that vibe. However I would not hold my breath for a new ongoing in the same vein. Check out Nightwing, it is the only Batman title worth reading currently and it is written by the same guy
I enjoyed Batman from Earth 46 (granpáverse).
>>153865497mid af
>>153870540Nice bait m8. Go read Fraction.
>>153870465>However I would not hold my breath for a new ongoing in the same vein.Well DC have seemed recently to be listening to people more and given how well the book has done we might see more.>Sorry if you were looking for hidden gem recommendations but it has been well over a decade since I sat down and read the series from start to finish.Honestly I need to do that. I'd love them to do some big collections of it.
>>153869763That makes sense, I just feel like it needed a bit more of a punch to it.
>>153865497So clearly the actual Detective Comics run last year it's completely killed interest in whatever the fuck Taylor is doing
>>153867121My favorite
>>153870486Is that finished?
>>153865497I really liked it. I am a big fan of Batman as a pure detective.
Watters said the TPB is doing well so far and that if it keeps selling well he and Sherman would like to convince DC to do another book
>>153874475Oh thats nice. I was under the impression that the series did not do that well, especially compared to something like Waids Robin Year One which is getting a sequel already. What needs to happen right now is get Watters on Detective and someone like Philip Kennedy Johnson on the main title
>>153865497I mean it was okay. Kinda forgettable. People acting like it’s the best Batman has been in decades is ridiculous though.
>>153876084We got actual detective stories with a point. Decent art. No endlessly Batwank, Batfamily and other associated bullshit. For many people the stripped back simplicity is best because it has a finer edged point to it. Okay so what do you think is the best Batman story in the last decade? Better than this?
>>153870465Man Heat sucked donkey balls.
>>153870486Mignolaverse
>>153876190Absolute batman
>>153876577I mean, that's alt universe stuff. He's not really doing much stripped back detective work there.
>>153869066I believe a total re-evaluation is necessary. Most "best of" comics will not hold up to modern scrutiny, and that's okay. We should get rid of all the crap that gets called great for flimsy reason like "it was good for its time".
>>153877950Part of the problem is the 1980s had an explosion of the medium, sales rising, indie scene and the big mainstream hits. Then the 1990s had the crash. So many of the best comics got held as a lift raft of relevancy for the medium. Watchmen is still to me a great comic. The problem is a bunch of the people who say it is a great comic aren't really trying to appreciate it for what it is. It's the hype and appealing to the authority of it. And the lessons that creators learnt from such works were not great ones, so rather than building off of it to make something better, they dissected it for spare parts. I think you'd be hard pressed to name a modern comic book on par with it. Enjoyable stuff is out there, but still. These re-evaluations continually lead to declarations of overrated, yet there isn't anything much better. Overrated as a criticism has never been interesting to me because it's people perceiving something as popular by mostly listening to hype, rather than taking it on its own merits, as much as you can do so.
>>153879923*Life raft
>>153877950>Most "best of" comics will not hold up to modern scrutinyI feel the opposite. Modern comics are often just shit TV shows on paper.
>>153876190>We got actual detective stories with a point. What point?
>>153876190Batman vs Predator. The first one.
>>153876190Last decade? I dunno, Gargoyle of Gotham maybe? The Knight wasn’t bad.
I liked it.
>>153880455>in the last decade
>>153880157I'm not talking about modern comics, I'm talking about modern scrutiny. Modern comics don't hold up to modern scrutiny.
>>153881424In the last decade… there probably isn’t one, but Full Moon was a lot of fun.
>>153874235Not yet, they re-released the issues in black and white.
>>153865497I wish they would do more.
>Massively superior to the main Batman ongoing>A black woman can control the Ventriloquist better than Wesker ever could because living as a black woman is putting on an act your entire life
>>153883385Wasn't she hispanic?
>>153883385You know you can spin shit to fit any narrative you want.>Women are more manipulative than men. Etc. Your comment is pretty damn meaningless. If you had read the story:>Wesker helped teach her and guide her.and,>The building had natural echoes making ventriloquism easier.
>>153884809I'd forgotten how it went, it was>Because black women are used to having their voices silenced all their lives
>>153885049She literally cut out his tongue and started loads of murderous shit and you're acting like it was a "heckin' girl power" moment.
>>153885169No, I'm acting like the story frames her as someone whose ambition Wesker couldn't have foreseen because he didn't experience her everyday struggles, i.e. social commentary, like the first arc really being about environment pollution or the third arc being about the lower class has to fend for themselves and create myths to protect their young when the police and the rich won't.
>>153885234> I'm acting like the story frames her as someone whose ambition Wesker couldn't have foreseenCome on anon, you're just shitposting now. You're changing your point majorly. Two seconds ago you're acting like her being "black" was the theme because her voice was silent.. If anything it was because of her being abused and Wesker identifying with her because he was abused too. It was about the degradation of the whole block too.>because he didn't experience her everyday strugglesLike I said, he identified with her, so he did implicitly understand her struggles which is why he sort to help her. You're just plain wrong here. The whole story talks about the struggles of the whole block. And Batman, when he finds Wesker, specifically talks about his struggles too when they are going down that service staircase and seeing holes into the apartments. Seriously anon, this is tiresome because you're all over the place and just being wrong.
>>153885502If you only quote half my sentence, it's disjointed, yes. I said Wesker didn't expect the lengths of her ambition, because the comic says Wesker didn't expect the lengths of her ambition.
>>153885565Because you were just framing it like this:>>153883385>because living as a black woman is putting on an act your entire life>>153885049>>Because black women are used to having their voices silenced all their livesOr have you backtracked from these comments?Wesker wanted to genuinely help her but her anger, representing the whole situation of the block, exploded into something larger. Yet you're framing it along some culture wars shit. He did understand her struggles, which is why he sort to help her. We're talking past each other here, anon.
>>153885639I said what I frame it as: social commentary. The reason Wesker was taken by surprise is because he couldn't have foreseen a black woman, by way of being used to oppression, would be more attuned to the doll than Wesker was. It's like an 80s Mike Grell story, but without any skill.
>>153885715>because he couldn't have foreseen a black woman>would be more attunedThis is just your headcanon at this point.
>>153879923I don't use the term "overrated". I stick to the classic good or bad and their variations. Knowing there aren't as many good comics as we thought is something I'd like use in favor of making more actually good comics. Let's truly surpass Watchmen this time.
>>153866960>>153867068The entire ending is a meta joke on how Batman is viewed by different authors. Dr. Sereika is the narratives that focus on Batman's detective skills as a way to take his figure down to Earth; Child of Fire is the idea of Batman as a quasi mythological figure, beyond human boundaries. They fight over how Batman should be portrayed.
>>153870465Read Prey recently and was surprised at how Strange was basically a proto incel.
>>153883385The story does actually justify the woman having good repression skills beyond being a black female.
>art makes everyone look like queer freaks>batman gets saved by a woman in the first story>muh fat black repressed woman in the second story>nameless female victim to chauvinism in the third story>weak overall endingGive me a fucking break already. Comics books are dead, face it and get over it
The last truly great Batman story was The Black Mirror, Snyder's Detective run right before the nu52 cancer swept everything. And it wasnt even a Batman story, strictly speaking, it was a Dickbats story. We havent had truly proper Batman since Paul Dini ffs
>>153888448Court of Owls was meant to be a Dickbats story before the Nu-52 was shoehorned in making it a Bruce story. Basically every storybeat failed because of it.>Graysons Flying Circus connected to the Talons.>Court moving post-Bruce Batman.>Licoln Marsh being more of a mentor to Dick.
>>153888807Shame if true. Snyder has since devolved into an overrated hack but he once had great potential as a Nightwing writer. He could never quite figure out Bruce but had Grayson's voice nailed
>>153888448>The Black MirrorNo. It's about as good as Dark Patterns.
>>153888324You're such a sensitive fag
>>153889459It is just all obvious bait. They aren't even trying anymore.
How difficult is it to find an issue with the Resident Evil misprint? I kind of want one for novelty value.>>153889237I can agree with this but I liked them both a lot.
>>153889459>sensitiveI pick up on the subtext of things. It is like an itch, I realize the subversion is there before even processing it fully. Not that these hacks are making it too difficult. Call me a fag if you must, although I am aesthetically repulsed by the way the artist makes everyone's face look as if they were malnourished lesbians on ssri. He may be good at drawing elaborate backgrounds and copying JH Williams' style but the character models are just ugly. And as for the ending being a letdown, that is just a fact. >>153889559Who is this we? I am just one guy giving my opinion. Nobody is out to get you. Dont be so... sensitive about this
>>153889663The artist is trans.
>>153876577Absolute Batman has nice art but it's the usual retarded Snyderslop writing
>>153889663>Who is this we? I am just one guy giving my opinion. Nobody is out to get you. Dont be so... sensitive about thisAnon, come on, even this response is just so obvious man. At least put a bit of work into it.
>>153889637Batman too lean
>>153865497it was decent but I don't get the big hypeAdmittedly, I haven't been reading batman lately, so maybe people are just grateful it's somewhat good in comparison
>>153891715You don’t know what that word means.
>>153880743The Knight was bad. Certainly worse than Dark Patterns.
>>153893156Think of the other cape comics of the last decade, did any of them live up to "the big hype"?
>>153893388Disagree
>>153893405I don’t read comics based on hype
>>153893429Too bad. For you.
>>153893441Whatever man. You got my point, stop being obtuse.
>>153890053The art was nice for the first couple of issues but very quickly started to feel rushed and unpolished. Story is typical "throw shit at the wall" slop and it went off the rails completely by the end of the second arc>>153889757Dunno about the artist but the editor most definitely is. John Turturro's nepo baby manchild, of all people. Same person who forced that other troon on the new Red Hood series in order to feel validated or something
>>153889637I don’t know about difficult but ask a local shop if they still have any issues in backstock, or make a want ad for the issue. It was funny seeing the error when I read it but it’s not like that made it collector material.
>>153893441Good for you
>>153893281He a skinny bitch
>>153889637The wildest thing is that this isn't even the first time this mistake has been made.
