Any tips on making the most of one's time at comic-con?

I went last year but I felt like I wasted alot of my time, though I still had some fun...

What went wrong last time? Whether you consider your time wasted will also depend on what you want to get out of the con. I'd say start off my figuring out some events or panels you definitely want to attend and build your schedule around those. Those are typically the most unique parts of a con. If it's something high profile though you may end up spending a lot of time waiting in line.

I consider the professional dealer booth sections to be somewhat of a trap. Don't spend too much time on those booths that only have merchandise you could reasonably find at a hobby shop or order online. On the flip side I find the artist alley section to be more fun in a treasure hunt sort of way since fan and independent produced stuff tend to have more variety (though there has also been a trend toward homogeneity and weirdly polished giant booths).

If you can get into one of the after parties or one of the back room things, or one of those hotel rooms where they have the weird things I remember talking to one guy and he was talking about how they're all doing cocaine and one of the rooms and when I went to a free convention there was some girl doing anal and some big orgy and one of the hotel rooms.

What went wrong LAST time was I kinda' ended up wandering around trying to find stuff, but what I should've done was browse the artist alley more, looking back.... I also attended a panel about marvel cosmic invasion and that was ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffine but iunno, I should attend a nicer one if I *have* to attend one next time.

Cosplay as a reasonably well known but not popular character so people will want unique pics with you

Its a glorified street market but with over priced nerd shit. Just look up what overpriced nerd shit you want and maker sure you get to that stall early.
There's literally nothing else to do there.

It did become a little obvious that that's what it basically is in the end.
and the actual events are OUTSIDE of the convention.

plan your day.
You NEED to plan your day by the hour and map shit out too, if you want to get the most bang for your buck.

If a panel is super popular, get there two hours ahead of time. IF you think it's going to be popular, get there an hour ahead of time. Check how long the lines are. Ask the staff at the doors what the wait time is too. If there's no lines, you can just walk away to do something else and come back 30-15 minutes before your panel starts.

IF you're lucky enough to get all 5 days, preview night is to map out all the booths. walk as much of the show room as possible and try not to spend any money that day. Usually i only manage to walk half the convention before preview night ends, but that's enough for me to visit artist alley, small press, and random small tables that have starving artists. Make a list of all the cool shit you want, especially in artist alley, and only buy shit on later days. With popular shit, they have enough stock to last them to at least Friday. If you want sketches, ask a day or two before.

Also, make conversations with people around you. It's other nerds who like the same shit you're lining up to watch. Make friends.
I've gotten to know more than a few people while waiting in line. They stuck around me for multiple panels and/or followed me around afterward. I've gotten invited to eat, drink, and hotel rooms almost every year. Some people who i talked to maybe half an hour i met again randomly at SDCC years later, because apparently I'm a pleasant fellow to hang around with.

a street market for nerds is always worth the admission price. IF you go to a convention to only buy shit, you shouldn't be going at all.
That said, i spend too much money every year. But I enjoy spending that money, because I'm usually discovering something new or something old i forgot existed.

there's not as much cool stuff going outside anymore.

before covid, they had a couple of things worth going to, like the Blade Runner 2049 experience thing with a dozen actors (prostitutes, bums, police, cooks, etc) and 50 other people explored a city corner that looked exactly like a set from the movie. They gave out real booze, tshirts, umbrellas, and other shit from inside the movie, and maybe someone found a murderer.
