There's something that I'm struggling to understand about indie animation in terms of writing and tone. When I was a kid, I absolutely hated "kiddie shit". Whether that be Disney cartoons, cartoons forcibly sanitized underneath a corporate body or from the complaints of soccer moms and always wanted to see darker or more mature themes in animation.

I'm autistic myself and I absolutely do not relate to this particular brand of autism where they are obsessed with things like musicals, keeping
everything safe and happy, etc.

Instead of wanting darker or more mature themes in animation, everything is the same, self-censored, PG-13, quippy, tumblr/MCU tier tone. Like the creators simply refuse to expand beyond that tiny bubble of possible tones, themes and writing. Nothing is allowed to be controversial, edgy or even out there anymore.

Why is this? I don't relate to this shit at all.

I'm not an indie creator.

Because more mature means you don't get memes and porn. You're also more open to criticism and ridicule when you attempt to be mature through art. The best way to avoid this is to pretend to be above it all and jokey. The person who made Wastelandia is a youtuber who's reputation depends entirely on how much teenagers like her too, which is why it's so boring.
If you want a good animated movie that explores mature themes, Princess (2006) is great.

because they’re pastel sociopaths who are genuine ticking timebombs, always needing to be in a dense hugbox because they go nuclear at any perceived slights

I kinda know what you mean, OP. I was so into shit like making Bionicle fan characters and Doom maps, anything slightly cutesy was a big turn off for me.

The youtube algorithm and Twitter indie fandom like conformity and homogeneity

A lot of the modern indie animators just want to make shows that are similar to what they grew up with. The problem with that is that those shows are all comedies made specifically for kids and we’re now in a time where anime is mainstream because it’s not enslaved to the kids audience.

The problem is we have adult children writing everything. They may be bringing up mature things but they’re handling them in kiddie ways. That’s why it all feels lame.

Did you ever retain knowledge of its broader lore?

OP here. I was okay with something being cutesy looking. What I hated was it being "censored cutesy". I was okay with cutesy designs but mature themes, but not when the writing was also forced to be dumbed down.

I don’t think in this regard they’re that different from what’s on TV and it’s probably because those are their influences and/or what they trained to do, at least partially.
Better question is where are the people who’d make other varieties of cartoon and what’s stopping them from doing the same?

Do you like HTF?

Paradigm shift and whatnot, can't you see people on socials foam at the mouth the second a superhero flick is too dark? Edgy shit is offensive and not hecking valid, everything has to be constructive based therapy shows now.

Invincible is a massive success with 4 seasons and Adi Shankar is currently defiling the Devil May Cry franchise after fucking Castlevania, there's absolutely room for edgy action cartoons with Liveleak-tier gore in the era of sappy indie therapy cartoons. Either you're being disingenuous for bait or have been living under a rock the past 6 years.

Not OP but i understand where he's coming from. I don't understand what drives someone running a show for the internet, under much more lax rules for what's acceptable, to ever even considering limiting himself to what was basically already done with adventure time. And the answer is always being mentally stunted/too incompetent to create new things.
>>

I was a bit sensitive to and I found it a little sad lol. But I liked other stuff like Sonic, Digimon; stuff like that.
>>
>>153899526
It’s not like nothing more bloody than Ben 10 exists, but it is weird that the internet scene has nothing comparable to Invincible even, which itself is still safe corporate edgy (for its target audience, not for kids obv).

Another thing is, companies like Glitch would absolutely shit their pants at the thought of having anything remotely controversial or edgy on their resume. Imagine if something like Coffin of Andy and Leyley was an animated series. They'd NEVER pick it up. It also comes down to indie companies being functionally the same as any other corporate board.
>>
>>153899462
This is starting to infect indie games as well. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley got shat on for similar reasons.
