For me, Marvel ended with Secret Wars, and I view Krakoa as taking place in an AU and staying there, never ending. DC's trickier because for a while they kept pumping Crisis after Crisis, each worse and more forgettable than the last. In the end I realised that, delayed as it was, Doomsday Clock was genuinely the last time DC felt epic and as if an event had weight. It was a mess, and Cereal Lord is a fag, but it serves as a good enough swan song.Seriously, why do both Marvel and DC feel so empty and aimless these days? They've been milking these characters for decades, what's changed in a few years? People harp on the 00s, but even until the 10s it felt as if those characters were going somewhere, as if things were somewhat progressing. But from the mid-10s and onwards literally nothing feels real. I see a panel or an issue and am shocked when I jog my memory and find out it came out 5 years ago, yet it's indistinguishable from a current issue. Nothing changes, it's all just treading ground. They try to raise the stakes in their stories, but it all feels hollow. I don't know how else to express it. Johnns ended his GL run what, nearly 15 years ago. You pick up a GL issue today and it's all just filler. Hal N' Pals joking around, being friendly neighborhood GLs, taking down OC aliens. Hal's a bum wearing only his flight jacket. Repeat. Over and over. Batman's so milked there's at least some illusion of change, if not progress. But most books feel like GL; aimlessly going past a definitive ending. I look at my devalued GL issues, and I wonder what was the point of me buying and reading them, when they'll never do anything better than Cereal Lord. It all just feels like a weight.But yeah, Doomsday Clock was bad, but boy, did we not know how awful it'd get...
