>Literal sorcerer with actual magic
>tells fortunes on the street corner for nickels

Explain this shit to me. His ability to transform folks into other folks alone would be worth billions to the CIA
>>
>>153900694
CIA didn’t exist yet also voodoo is fucked.
>>
1. Doesn't want to draw too much attention to himself because the existence of one actual sorcerer implies the existence of more
2. He runs a voodoo emporium in a good part of town that we see is physically huge, he probably has pretty decent money already and the street fortune thing is just a way to lure people into it
3. Nickels were good money in early 20th Century New Orleans so he's earning pretty good side money on top of that
>>
>>153900694
Nickel magic is a loss leader. He trades in people's Souls.
>>
>>153900694
No reasonable person is going to think a fortune teller is anything more than a charlatan.

>voodoo is fucked
This. Voodoo is a dirty, grimy sort of magic.
>>
>>153900694
Give this anon a job at Disney. Such flawless logical deduction skills are wasted on the rubes here.
>>
>>153901101
Implying anyone in JoJo is reasonable.
>>
I guess that doing small tricks for small cash ain't as physically demanding as doing stronger magic that also requires a sacrifice of your soul and will drag you to hell if you can't pay.
Each magic has their own lore but voodoo requires you to give things in return of what you're doing.
>>
>>153901153
>black people magic is dirty
What are you trying to say
>>
>>153900694
Did you miss the part where he robs people of their souls?

Princess and the Frog is a period piece, though. Facilier's lucky he wasn't locked up for his sorcery

What are you babbling about?
>>
>>153902657
You should watch more than one movie
>>
>>153900694
the movie clearly shows that he's under the thumb of the voodoo demons that drag him to hell in the end, he can't just do bullshit all willy nilly
>>
>>153900735
>>153901153
Look, just because the Iwa are really upfront about the fact they'll ride you harder than a rented mule and put you down wet doesn't mean they're bad. Don't be a pussy. Be like Count Zer0.
>>
>>153900694
under dnd tropes, he's more of a warlock who sold his soul than a sorcerer. facilier's power isn't his, it's on loan from his bosses, so he can't just splash it around however he wants unless it's part of a scheme he can convince them to back.
>>
>>153901153
Mama Odie proves that there is a good side to Voodoo magic to. Facilier just wants to take the easy and lucritive route. Standard white magic/black magic.
>>
>>153901221
Give and take is standard in just about every school of magic around the world, not just voodoo.
>>
>>153902537
I doubt anyone but the most fire and brimstone pastor was going to condemn a negro doing harmless parlor tricks. Even if your racist, shit like that aint worth the effort.
>>
>>153902674
What are YOU babbling about?
>>
frogs are gross
>>
>>153900694
Well it’s not like he can just do whatever he wants. The movie explains he can only do magic if it’s in the service of others. This means that in order for him to get his magic to give him anything he wants, he needs to rope in just the right sucker who has the right sort of wish that he can monkey paw somehow into serving his own needs. This means he has to go through a wide range of people looking for exactly the right stooge, and if that person happens to only be able to afford to pay him a nickel, then he has to sometimes charge a nickel just to get a chance to encounter them.

And I guess for some reason he didn’t want to just grant wishes for high fees and just get rich that way for some reason. Probably he foresaw some way that’d just backfire on him, like somebody woulda sued him for being a scam artist, or he’d draw too much attention and get lynched for being a witch. He more specifically wanted power and security rather than just money.
>>
>>153900694
Come on man, the movie outright shows working with voodoo shit is super risky, plus he's playing it safe until he finds the right mark, an actual prince.
>>
>>153902674
The VA is the same one as Sgt Foley from Modern Warfare 2.
>>
>>153900694
> His ability to transform folks into other folks
He doesn’t have that ability. His ability is granting wishes. He can only turn the butler dude into the prince because the butler dude had a very deep seated envy. He can’t just, say, turn Charlotte into Tiana just to fuck around, because nobody would wish for that.
>>
>>153900694
Because he is not really a wizard as much as he seems to just know about soul stealing eldritch outsiders that people can pact with. It's not really a safe thing to do a whole lot.
>>
>>153900694
Isn't that always how it goes?

The literal magic witch lives in a fucking hovel outside of town near the swamp.
I'll believe them if it's a billionaire that also does sorcery. I can believe they might know some advantageous spells. But a broke ass starving loser who says they are magic just displays how bullshit it is.
>>
>>153902819
niggas got locked up for "loitering" just because they showed up to the wrong bar, cops don't need an excuse to arrest anyone, even less for a black man
>>
>>153900694
Always seemed more like he was abusing a magic system that was designed from the start to only be helpful and not lead to someone obtaining personal power or setting themselves up to be a sorcerer king.

So this guy tries to find loopholes around the rules set up for him, and he gets the spirits mad enough to drag his ass to hell for it. They were already pretty damn pissed off at him earlier in the movie.

The whole thing likely ends up with those gods deciding humanity is just a bunch of lying fucks and no one else gets to be a wizard any longer.
>>
>>153905177
He probably cannot actually get any high paying or decent clients since not many people would give him the time of day unless they are losers about to hit rock bottom. And they barely have money to begin with.
>>
Dr Facilier was a Shadow Man anyways, on account of him appropriating veves for his own fucked up designs. Would've made more sense for him to have a Baron Kalfou veve

I always assumed that he was just using it as a cover for his other activities. So that way New Orleans Police Department gets reports of "there's a fucking nigger who always seems to be there whenever supernatural shit happens", they just assume he's just a harmless schizo/grifter who isn't worth the time investigating rather than the actual cause and then go back to their usual business of taking bribes and beating up black people for drinking at the wrong water fountain.
>>
>>153900694
He scams everyone who does business with him by twisting the deal to screw them over, even when there's no benefit to doing so. Like the guy who wanted hair and got it, all over his body. If he actually gave people what they want without twisting it, he'd have a better reputation and more customers, and he'd have repeat customers too.
>>
>>153901153
Is voodoo just discount necromancy?
>>
>>153900694
you forget one important thing
>be black
>in the south
>in the early-mid 20th century
>>
>>153900694
He doesn't have any true powers he's just borrowing from the Loa and will have to payback a hefty prize for any worthwhile magic trick.
>>
>>153902537
Most Voodoo practitioners were left alone because people were scared to get on their bad side. The voodoo queen, Marie Laveau, was visited by elites and her tomb was to be given gifts otherwise they'd suffer a terrible curse.
>>
>>153910019
It's discount Catholicism which is already discount Pantheism.
Louisianan Voodoo was mostly Catholicism with old African folk religious beliefs. You went to church to worship God and did Voodoo to get things done.
Haitian Voodoo tried to appease the Loa to gain their favor and power. There are supposed to be over thousands of Loa divided into 17 nations. The Rada Nation Lwa are the kind Loa but not as powerful as the other nations. Petwo Nation Lwa are more powerful but are violent and morally ambiguous. Beer and their favorite food is the most common way to appease a Loa.
Hoodoo is just generally spiritualism of Voodoo. Practitioners of Voodoo are religious practitioners of Hoodoo are just using the Hoodoo system to get what they need.

I'd rather go to a voodoo doctor than a medical doctor, because a voodoo doctor will charge you a Loa price.

Why the fuck would anyone who could do actual magic give a fuck about money?
>>
>>153912288
To make him appear normal so people don't suspect he's performing actual magic.

>Aka Catholicism
When you start noticing all the retarded "muh Christianity" accusations that get thrown around just to see what sticks, you start to think that maybe there's something to the whole Satan/Accuser thing.
Thanks for the example.
>>
>>153910019
No, there's more to it than necromancy
>>
I still don't really understand the moral.

>Tianna needs to learn to let loose and that work isn't everything, it's ok to be poor.
>Still gets her giant ass restaurant.
>Laveen needs to learn to put in the work and that money isn't happyness.
>I guess ends up managing the entertainment of the restaurant, but still ends with money.
>>
>>153902694
This. It's one of the things that makes him one of my favorite villains. I love the baddies that get in over their heads playing with powers they don't understand. The majority of the magic he can do at sustainable cost is probably just parlor tricks
