Fucking loved it and I'm worried that the following episodes won't be able to recapture its quality. Animation was cool, the action was entertaining, got some decent laughs out of it (Evil Morty mocking Morty's failed attempt at fooling the Collective, Rick punking Evil Morty and his season 1-esque ranting and raving, the bunker dimension in general, and the cartoon running sound effect).

Evil Morty's a fun character and every time I wonder what they could possibly do with him, they manage to find a way to make him entertaining each time he shows up. But goddamn, compare this episode to Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind and it's like watching two different shows.

Great animation and fights and top tier lore episode, probably my favorite post-season 2 episode for that matter. For the most part it genuinely felt like a classic episode despite all the show's modern aspects, if only because I stayed invested the entire time and I can't remember the last time R&M did that for me. The only part that bugged me is how out of character EM felt. The thing is I get it though, Rick even lampshades it while slamming the gas to get back home, about how EM got cocky after winning so much. I can buy that. Maybe he got bored. Maybe the constant winning really did get to him. Maybe the insurance the Omega Device provided brought out his inner hedonist and he though "fuck it, Rick's my bitch now anyway" and, still being a teenage kid and a Morty, unwittingly gave into the illusion of invincibility he built up for so long. People bitch that he went back on his word and goals but I think all they needed to do was explain and visualize his change of heart better; a throwaway observation in the middle of a rabid rant probably wasn't the way to go but I guess they were pressed for time.

Can't wait for the rest of the season to be a fucking wash.

Pretty much this. Like I enjoy it well-enough for latter-day R&M, but it really puts a spotlight on what another anon in another thread called "Inspector Gadget Rick." To wit, the cybernetics have become like the sonic screwdriver in Doctor Who or Seven of Nine's nanites in Voyager: a be-all way to make the character more powerful/capable by fiat, leading you to wonder how real the stakes are for them. Like in The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy back in season 3, Rick's piecemeal cybernetics were made a big deal out of, and now you wonder if there is any flesh and blood left to him so to speak.

It also raises the question of why the likes of the denizens of the Citadel didn't also have similar levels of cybernetics, or at least shine a light onto the implications thereof. A tool in a finger or two and an eye with enhanced scanning capabilities is fine, but when its JC Denton meets Adam Jenson meet Ryder from ME Andromeda, you start to wonder not only what actually is at stake, but why they need to build certain tools or technologies when said tools and technologies are under his skin.

The appeal of Evil Morty is his dynamic with the main characters, and in this episode all he did was taunt regular Morty, and regular Morty cussed him out. That's it. I'm not even going to acknowledge the battle he had with Rick at the end because it was also lacking any substance or stakes. Both are immune to damage, so nothing was accomplished. How this resolved was clever, but that doesn't make sitting through the whole thing any less of a slog.

Considering how shit the show has become with the newer writers fumbling so much the last few seasons, this really just feels like a flashy fanservice episode to try and bring people back.

No, there are definitely stakes but fights in this show operate under playground rules. If Rick were to get shot in the head, die, and attempt to revive himself with a clone, the bullet Evil Morty shot at him probably would have unleashed tiny nano bots that scanned his brain the moment the bullet entered his head and relayed the info on the whereabouts of the location Rick is being revived at so that he can teleport there and destroy it. Rick would then counter that by having a biometric scanning system on the place in the event Evil Morty stumbled upon it, triggering a death trap and so on and so on.

I've only watched one episode of Inside Job but I'm guessing this new show will likely deal with more conspiracy government type shit like what what I imagine Inside Job to be. People keep saying this but it was always obvious Evil Morty was going to come back. They left open the plot point of Evil Morty taking the schematics for the Omega Device and in his last appearance he flat out says "you are a little different Rick, maybe I can use that some day". He knows the "Rickest Rick" seems to be the most brokenly overpowered one and manipulating Ricks for his own ends is like the main reason Evil Morty go to be so powerful himself.

He was using Rick C-137 to help protect the Central Finite Curve and after the job was done only stayed for that diner scene just because regular Morty was there and he was enjoying making fun of his jealously. Then shit just spiraled out from there.

I was a fan during the first 2 seasons.
Season 3, unsurprisingly, was the season that made me go from fan to just passively watching it sometimes.
It sucks too because I remember thinking the season 3 premiere was really good, but the rest of that season was genuinely so terrible that I did not care if/when the show was coming back.

I'll check up on it sometimes now and occasionally it does still have an episode I enjoy, but it mostly feels schlocky and uninspired.

You can't blame Roiland leaving because he was already checked out long before his controversies, his last writing credit was even in the middle of season 3! Maybe it was just never meant to become the giant it is now.

From my perspective the show has been erratic in that I don't think any one season was the best since all of them have this or the other episode like the spaghetti one or the incest baby one. The show simply put has its moments.
That said, this was to me the best episode of the series.
Great action and animation, somewhat good jokes and dialogue.
The story got me invested.

Same with me. If I look at the episode list, there's usually only a couple of episodes that I really enjoy per season, and either find the rest mediocre or terrible. Like for the 1st season alone, I only really enjoy Lawnmower Dog, Anatomy Park, and Close Rick-Counters Of The Rick Kind, with the rest being kinda eh, or insufferable like Raising Gazorpazorp.

I fucking hate Anatomy Park and don't understand its appeal. The main plot is really not all that entertaining (haha Jurassic Park references, haha Morty's awkward around a girl, haha random characters dying in gorey ways) and the subplot with Jerry's cuckold dad was uncomfortable, irritating, and not fun to watch. It's like the OG Bethcest episode.

And the Meeseeks episode. Now THAT is an episode that's amazing on a first-time viewing but it's aged poorly. Funnily enough, the Evil Morty episode still gets a lot of laughs out of me and is all around an entertaining adventure. And what do ya know, it's a lore episode, no wonder why it's so great!

I don't get Evil Morty's motivations. I mean, it's usually because of new writers on a show but somebody help me out here
His whole thing was just being sick of Rick, right? Destroying the curve and GTFOing hard. He only came back because Rick Prime shenanigans were fucking up his self-imposed exile. So he basically gave Rick his revenge on a silver platter, stole the weapon designs as the ultimate mutually-assured-destruction deterrent and fucked off again.
So why did he come back at all? Why taunt Morty? If his entire character arc was just to escape and be left alone, why did he return? Again, it's probably because the showrunners wanted more screentime for one of their most popular characters but I need some coherent narrative explanation on this

Well, the Watsonian rundown is:
He was a slightly-smarter and a little darker (as seen from his room in Unmortricken) Morty whose ego overpowered his love for Rick, at which point he decided he needed to escape. His dialogue in Close Rickcounters of the Rickkind suggests that he too could not comprehend a Rick that genuinely cared for his Morty, not just in an unhealthy attachment sort of way, but as a grandfather. Remember how Morty's uprising that episode is what ultimately saved our Rick and foiled EM's plans. That must have been when his interest was piqued in our Morty. Remember that Evil Rick's line mocking Rick for crying about Morty was actually EM's.
So while his plan which at that point could have been the destruction of all Ricks changed to simply leaving the curve. For which he once again warranted our Rick's assistance, and he saw for himself how this Rick and Morty interacted with each other. And finally, in his third encounter, it was cemented in his mind that this pair was different from your run of the mill smartass grandpa and dumbass grandson. Which compounded with his loneliness within the infinite meant that he'd come fuck with them. In many ways his path is just like Rick Prime's.

Justinfags are deluded weedbros entering their 30s that adored the earlier seasons of Rick and Morty for being one of those dumb mindfuck shows to watch when you're high and because Roiland reminded them of themselves they've always made it a point that the show going to shit was because Roiland wasn't part of it anymore even though unlike some writers that did leave after seasons 2 or 3 Roiland stuck with the show until season 6 and his absence from the show only became noticeable from that point because the show RECOVERED from the pits that it was sent to during seasons 4 or 5. Like most jews in the industry all Roiland has ever contributed to is degenerate r34 crap and toiler humor that he most indubitably gets off to. But yeah Justinbros tend don't want to face that reality and would instead prefer the show becoming Family Guy for dudes that like pop science.
