Have them both getting married when they were pretty young and their marriage fall apart just a year later because Carol have big dreams and ambition while Hal wants a quite and peaceful life which is why he returns to his hometown. You can have Jo as his childhood friend and start with Hal being a black lantern before the arc end by him gaining the green light because the absolute universe isn't about changing the CORE of their characters and Hal will always be THE Green Lantern.

It would've been a better story if it just began with the town getting trapped by the Lantern, going through the process of judgement (or whatever it's called), Jo becoming an Anomaly, & Hal getting turned into a Black Hand instead of just dropping us on the side of the road in the middle of this first arc. I get that it's "in medias res" but it doesn't work when you keep progressing the Present plotline before we fully understand the Past Prologue. It picks up after that mess is untangled, actually gets cosmic, and then treats us to some Tarantino-esque antics with Cameron, Baz, & Kari.Also Sid Kotian should've been the only artist on it. Jahnoy Lindsay's style isn't bad, but it's way too soft for this story. At least the disparity isn't as bad as that between Rafa Sandoval & Juan Ferreyra over on Absolute Superman. Sandoval is such a dogshit photoshop abuser, & Ferreryra imbues all the emotion that the first 14 issues lacked into every panel... then after like 3 or 4 issues we go back to Sandoval.

Its why her ring in Far Sector is so abnormal to others, and the character has a fear of heights they later have to retcon (I'm pretty sure it was a fear of heights... its been a while since that shit book came out and I read it). It was a shit book and I have my doubts it actually did well. I have no clue what its sales numbers were, but if they were even 1/2 ways decent, I'm guessing DC pushed it on the distributors/shops.
